Thanks Dave,

I just wish we we were a little more consistent at that level.

The clip is from one of those shows where everything just fell into place from the word " go ".

Daryl

Love it when that happens.

Crossroads

I'm not sure if you can open this. If you can at one point I go into a fill that I didn't didn't land so great.

Love that funky little twist you have going on there Daryl. I've never heard that played with a pick before but that works so well.

Don't think the fall was that bad as i hardly noticed it. I've always thought Crossroads sounded like a loose jam and playing the "Jazz" version works quite well in cream songs.

In the mid 80's at a very packed rock venue in middle of Glasgow the 3 piece band i was in was playing Crossroads and the singer/guitarist and drummer decided it would be fun to announce a bass solo from their new bass player. I was using a fretless WAL at the time and had never been put in this position before so i just kept the main riff going and added a few fills and chords but i wasn't happy they did it as i'm not great at ad-libbing like that in front of an audience. I'm ok at a rehearsal kind of thing or even at home but when people are watching me the old panic sets in.

Since that day i've told almost every band i've been in that bass solos are boring and don't work for me or an audience. I'd much prefer to work a solo out at home and just play a "planned, rehearsed" solo but none at all is better. 🤩

I liked it, very different from what I play.

I try to follow Jack Bruce for the main part, although I steal a ZZ Top turnaround because it fits really well 🙂 Not being him, 'improv in his style' might be a generous description of what I try to do in the solos...

Thanks Dave, but I wish we had a more " produced" sound like your band.

I like solos in jazz on the double bass. I'm not a fan of the electric bass guitar solo in rock songs.

Agreed Dave, she's always going to call a bass solo in "Them Changes". I'm going to work out a solo at home and have something concrete that will work most of the time.

Thanks Stub,

I cringe everything I hear myself playing that one sticato fill. I played it too long because I couldn't figure out how to land it back on the groove.

Have to say i think your sound is very well produced assuming its the overall sound of the band you are talking about. I've seen a few of your vids now Daryl and the band sound is superbly balanced between you. Don't fix what isn't broken.

The tone i use in the Glam band does vary depending on the band i'm covering but overall its not a tone i would choose if doing originals. I find it a bit dull with no edge to cut thru but it suits what we do.

I switch on the amp "bright" boost for songs with lots of energy like Crazy Horses, Hellraiser and a few others but mostly its songs that had P basses on the original recordings.

I like basses with a nice edge on them whether that's hi-mids or treble. From Geddy Lee to Glenn Hughes from Stormbringer era to the likes of Steve Harris from Iron Maiden.

That famous Ric bass tone is probably my fav tone but i find Rics a little bit limited altho the new basses with the tone switch is pretty varied. (sure i've offended someone with that comment 😂)

You were sitting perfectly tone and mix wise in those videos.

I'm still not sure I'm using my pre amp toggles correctly .

Thanks Daryl, was a hard one as the stage sound was very boomy but not so much out front. It was so boomy at times i couldn't hear the upper ranges of tone at all. I just put up with it and assumed i was playing the right notes 😂

Those G&L basses do have a lot of switches and variable tone EQ which is something i'm not a big fan off. I'm more a volume and tone control or like my Jazz basses with VVT or VPT set up. Just simple EQ and let the amp do the main work. On my Jazz basses i set my volume(s) and use the tone control for the different songs.

I do like a humbucker sound tho and have been considering something new like possibly a Stingray but they are daft money these days. The G&L with the single HB in the middle is a nice tone too. The Sandbergs are great basses to play but i think their pick ups and pre-amps could be better but that's on another thread somewhere.

Think with you using a pick you get that nice little click or edge on your tone and i really like that.

Very tight space in the North Bay museum for a seven piece Christmas gig last Saturday night, BL looks unhappy but he booked the gig knowing where we would be set up. We were in an area where there is a big staircase in the room leading to the upstairs area where there were activities for kids so there was a constant stream of people passing us and some even stayed to listen for a while. We played some standards and quite a few Christmas pieces arranged for a small band and it went well, although in the jazz waltz arrangement of Oh Christmas Tree (terrible chart and too long) I was totally lost for about a third of the song while the tenor sax was soloing but I just kept the 3/4 pulse going and finally got back on track.

Lots of vendors set up outside the building on a cool night (-4C) so folks came in to warm up and listen for a bit so we always had an audience.

I used my Yamaha SLB200 straight into a small Roland amp that handled the keyboard too. Reasonable load in and out and a nice no pressure gig that also served as a rehearsal for a couple of gigs we have coming up before Christmas.

Playing the main riff through the solo request. I still do that. Lol

I've noticed it before that you have a nice funky wrist action on the pick hand on some of your songs that i've never really heard used before Daryl.

Think the nearest i've heard to it was Bobby Vega.

Very nice light touch too.

Your Crossroads version works for me. I've always mostly used picks in my bands. Goes back to when my short six-string guitar phase was abruptly and brutally terminated in my high-school class of '61. Conversation with my buddies Jim and Steve went like this:

STEVE (already a proficient drummer in a Shadows band with his older brother) - The Shadows stuff is shit. Let's start our own band.

ALL: Yeah, great idea!

STEVE AND JIM: You're a great singer but a crap guitarist. You'll have to get a bass!

ME: OK, I'll ask my mum and dad.

First step was selling my six-string Hofner (Senator?) acoustic guitar.

For a while all I had left was my picks.

Apologies for the laugh emoji but have to admit to finding your story very funny Mike. 😂

No worries Dave. That moment as a failed guitarist set me off on my stellar career as an average bass player.

Yep, It's the hi-level consistency that we're working towards in my band right now.

And you do a sterling job of it Mike. Best thing you ever did. On that day you doubled your IQ. 😂
