The Marlin
I'm thinking of buying a beautiful instrument that has suffered some neck damage. I think a good luthier can made a decent job of the neck repair, so might be willing to take the gamble. Does anyone know of any great luthiers in the Buckinghashire or London area? The only other option I can think of is to take it to Jaydee guitars in Birmingham, and get John to fix it. Bit of a treck though. He fixed my friends Jaydee Flying V a few years ago, did a pretty good job. Any recomendations? Cheers Mr Marlin
dannybuoy
There's a sticky on this: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=26654 For London, I've heard Charlie Chandler's or The Gallery recommended for setups, they could probably do neck repairs also. The Marlin
When you say neck damage... how much are we talking?!
Headstock not quite broken off. Break starting either side of the truss rod, and running at a slight angle, down the neck, stopping at the first fret. It's not falling off, and a nice clean crack - no splintering. Could likely be glued, and pinned with two pieces of dowling inserted and glued glued down the neck, either side of the truss rod - then sanded in, and repainted. I've head of Charlie, and spoken with him in the past about a stalled Fender Bass VI project. I've hears he's excellent at setup, and building, but not heard any recomendation on repair. May give him a call. Cheers Paul
Pentode
My recommendation would be to get in touch with Andy Viccars - http://www.andyviccarscustom.co.uk/ Absolute Top geezer IMO - has done some great work for me. urb
FWIW I saw the incredible job Martin at The Gallery do on that F Bass that fell out of a car boot on the motorway - the neck was seriously smashed but when he'd finished it looked immaculate, give him a call first and see what he says Hope that helps Mike

And he has loads of experience with repairing headstock/neck breaks. Based in Milton Keynes - so not too far away from you as well.
Moos3h
Possibly a shade too far for you, but I can 100% recommend TJC Guitars who did a superb job on the Kay that had the neck damaged in transit that I bought from silverfoxnik!
sixshooter
Speak to Joe Joe White 01252 520911 www.jwhite-guitarworkshops.co.uk Farnborough Does all my work, has built me both Bass and Guitars and most of the local shops bring their broken necks to him so he has a lot of experience in that type of repair. The Marlin
Thanks guys, great recomendations. I also visited the Bass Repair thread - thanks for that link to the sticky. Sorry I hadn't spotted it yet, still navigating my way around here. Have emailed the ones that makes sense geographically, will let you know how I get on, and eventually post results. All the best Mr Marlin
lowdown
Looks like you are sorted... There was a guy who used to set up Marcus Millers Basses, he could sing a bit as well - top guy.. His name was Luthier Vandross. There is always Robbie of RIM Basses.. He is in Luton. Garry
michael-faces
Definately check David Ridgeway of Ridgeway Guitars. He's a specialist in neck repairs: http://www.ridgewayguitars.co.uk Also check out some of the repairs he's done on this link: http://www.ridgewayguitars.co.uk/repairs_a...ation_page2.htm Look at the Epiphone Les Paul on that page, the guitar's headstock had broken off and now you can't see a scratch! The Marlin
Hi guys, I decided to buy that guitar and repair the neck. I've spoken to a few luthiers now, so confident the end result will be stunning. The guitar is a Gretsch; my fourth Gretsch this year. Bad GAS. Cheers all Mr Marlin
Cat Burrito
Gretsch bass or guitar?
The Marlin
I have two basses, both Yamaha (RBX 774 and an RBX 775). I'd love a Gretsch bass, but rarely see them on eBay. How do Gretsch bass guitars stack up against Fender and the other major names in Bass? Do they come up in the gear section of this site often?
