this track by MFSB, one of my all-time faves:

This has been my 'warm-up' song for years :)

I always play this at soundcheck when the sound guy wants to get a level.

Just realised that I should only be posting in this thread if I add a new song each time

Here's a nice version of Space Cowboy played on my Overwater J (not by me I hasten to add - it's Simon Merrick, a previous owner & a far better player than me!).

This thread continues to make me dig out some of my older (jazz/)funk 'n' groove vinyl, which I really should do more often, so thanks again to Pete for helping me burn the midnight oil! :)

A great album I picked up in the early 80's, purely on the strength of the line-up, was 'Just Family' by Dee Dee Bridgewater.
Produced by Stanley Clarke and featuring the likes of Alphonso Johnson, Abe Laboriel, Ken Wild (Seawind) and Stanley on bass.
Plus Chick Corea, George Duke, Ray Gomez, Harvey Mason, Bobby Lyle and others.

Ken Wild, from jazz-funk band Seawind, was one of the bassists on the above album. This track was from the first Seawind album:

Another link from the DDB album above is keyboardist Bobby Lyle. His classic 1977 track 'The Genie' featured (to my ears) some superb bass and drum interaction from Don 'Donnie' Beck and Steve Gutierrez:

If we were not both bass players, Pete, I'd swear we were in the same band in another life! :)
I've looked at Crusaders and Azymuth tracks in particular to put on here. Not to mention things like The Commodores 'Brick House'.
How about some Caldera?

IMO here's the daddy of the funk and groove....David Bendeth, 'Feel The Real'.

This is a masterclass in one track.

Anyone know who played on this?

Sorry, Pete - have to chime in here again as I have this album too!
Excellent stuff though - Randy Bramwell is on bass. The vocals are credited to The Boyer Brothers. David Span (drums), Memo Acevedo (perc) and Cleveland Hughes (keys).
The other big track on the album, for me, is 'Adrenalin' (with Marcus Miller and Lenny White) though sadly it's in copyright dispute at the moment on Youtube. :) Edited by Dad3353

Hey folks, here as promised is a little medley from my last gig. We go under the banner Roots Revisited and we put on a night where we covered live versions of Jill Scott and Erykah Badu tunes. It was a great learning experience in so many ways: putting together and rehearsing an 11 piece band, working out a whole heap of material by ear, trying to nail not only parts but the style as well etc etc...
Anyways, here it is, let me know what you think:

Our next night is gonna be a Prince night ;-)

My absolute favourite track ever.....ever !!!
I had the pleasure of chatting with Randy Bramwell a couple of months back about this one.He mentioned that he and David Bendeth might be reforming the band that did this for a new project.I put a request in with Marlow to do it for his site but he wasn't forthcoming unfortunately.
For me Bass lines don't come much better than this. Edited by Dad3353

hi all,
a funky x-mas to you.
this guy is a multi-instrumentalist and composer. it's cut'n'paste stuff, so traditional funksters might not be so overwhelmed but anyway try 'pretty from a distance ' and '12 apostles'. i have his l.p. 'unfabulous', it's fun..
http://www.myspace.com/flevansmusic
i hear he's also collaborating with a similarly talented guy .. http://www.myspace.com/lackofafro
enjoy..

[quote name='51m0n' post='679773' date='Dec 10 2009, 12:07 AM']Another definitive groove:-

That is the real shizzle right there.

If you need to 'learn' feel, play along to this for 6 weeks.

You either go mad or you learn good, or both - biscuit mudflap perfiffle Mr Flibble is very angry etc etc....

Once you got that one you neeeeeed to get this one:-

That's just made me look up the bassline, download the video from Youtube and disappear to the spare bedroom. Never heard of The Meters, but I'll be finding out more.
