Nostalgia city, I had a Thunder IIa, same as the pale one in the opening post. Bought in 1987 as my second bass for £180, and only superseded by my much desired Status Empathy in 1993. Kept the Thunder IIa for a while, then sold it to someone at work, as I really only ever need one bass. Sorry to see it go, as it really did feel & sound fantastic. Outstanding value for money at the time!

snap! i used a Thunder 1A for my first ever gig.....happy memories, it was a Central London Polytechnic in about 1983 in a band called Illicit Kiss!

What excellent taste you have - superheadless and a dotty blue theme. Here's my contribution to the same thing.

Your logos may be gone due to wear and tear? Mine are jazz types so I can't advise on your version.

I have to say, it is a LOVELY bass. Currently retired as I am having a spot of tennis elbow trouble in my left (fretting) arm and have gone short scale (Dean Evo XM) in the hope that I don't have to give up altogether. But that Superheadless, lovely through neck, MASS, sustain, yet compact and just hangs where you want it, and I paid £150 for it! :)

Here’s my only Westone (currently). Yeah, yeah it’s one of them skinny stringers, but it’s a fantastic piece of kit and has an excellent back story;

My dad rescued this '83 Concord II from a car boot sale in a sorry state; stickered up, extra holes drilled and bits missing. It was one of the last instruments resurrected by a certain ERB’ist of this parish before his enforced retirement, and he did a phenomenal job.

She’s one of the best ‘S’ types I’ve ever laid hands on; light, resonant and versatile.

An update on my Westones.

So, initially, I was really pleased with the green re-finish I did on it. However, I was not as pleased with the pickup and electronics. So, I have installed an EMG 40CSX pickup with a 3-band EMG BQC control preamp. And only today have installed the final piece in the jigsaw, which is a wonderful Union Jack stingray-influenced pickguard, courtesy of our wonderful Bassdoc.

THis bass is an absolute tone-monster and now looks awesome to match (to me anyway !).

And it's brother, a new (to me) 1981 Thunder 1A (v1), just purchased from Davy of this forum (I think this bass may have been around the forum a bit).
I'm going to keep this one natural. It already has an extra J pickup added (I believe by Bassdoc). Since it's arrival, I have changed the P pickup to a later 80's Westone Thunder P pickup (which is rather lower output and gives more "standard" vintage type tones). Also I have filed the nut slots a bit, and given it a good fret job . Oh, and also given it a full 500K pots circuit, as it had a mix of 250 and 500 in there.
It now plays a treat and gives me the sounds I wanted. These old Thunders really do have a chunk and bite to them. The necks are perfect for me. Built to last. I love 'em.

My 1986 Spectrum LX, owned from new and currently wearing flats with the fretted neck. I fitted a simple MDF ramp using double-sided tape just to get a feel for using one. Early on I decided I wanted to get exactly the same break angle for all strings at the nut for the fretted neck so transplanted the string retainer from the fretless neck (and substituted with a Fender style retainer on that headstock). I got my first experience of playing fretless with the Spectrum and enjoyed it so much I bought a Cort B4FL that I now prefer for fretless playing.

Very nice. Westones plus EMGs are a great mix IMO.

Anyway, here's the (probable) finish of a recent build of mine. It's an '86 Thunder 1A body and an '83 neck, body refinished in a peppermint green. I routed it for an additional MM pickup in the MM sweetspot (pushes the P pickup a few mm's towards the neck). Oh, and a natty MM-type pickguard I made up.
CUstom pre-amp, 3 band with parametric mids. It's a beast !

I have 2 Thunder 1s, an active and a very highly customised passive.
Mods include pup covers machined from solid brass, etched brass truss rod cover, gold coloured hardware everywhere, de-fretted, veneered and multiple staining to front and back.

Minor thread resurrection here - I've just put a new set of strings (La Bella SN45) on my old Spectrum LX, courtesy of fellow BCer jude b who had some strings he didn't need (too heavy a gauge) and he's very kindly donated them to me. Now the Westone is my oldest bass and from new it's only ever worn steel rounds (Rotos) and steel flats (tried Rotos early on, then some Fender flats most recently). As a late convert to nickel rounds I'd never tried any on the Spectrum so was more than a little curious to try the La Bella set (a new string maker to me) and OMG, it's incredible... a bass that I'd generally put to one side, as I was playing more the two Squiers I own, now has a favoured place in my collection. Something about the Westone pickups, and electronics (where I believe the active EQ works rather like a Wal in that the Spectrum LX has a sweepable filter tone boost overlaying a passive tone filter though it sounds good in both passive and active tone shaping modes) and I'm gobsmacked at how good it sounds now... I'd characterise the sound as having great 'authority' if that makes sense.

So, if you haven't tried changing strings in a while I can definitely recommend the La Bella SN45 set.
