Brian18242 Posted yesterday at 17:12 Posted yesterday at 17:12 I'm trying to fit a new EMG P pickup to a Warwick Adam Clayton bass with no success. I followed the accompanying diagram but still no luck? Another issue is the EMG output jack is a lot smaller than the stock Warwick one it comes with. Any ideas? Quote
Hellzero Posted yesterday at 18:11 Posted yesterday at 18:11 Look carefully at the official EMG diagram, you'll see what you're doing wrong! The pickup is entering the volume pot below, not above and you mismatched the position of the connectors on the tone pot!?! So the inputs and outputs are totally wrong. Double check everything before going any further. Quote
Brian18242 Posted yesterday at 18:28 Author Posted yesterday at 18:28 Thanks for reply. Let me double check, I'm sure the pickup wire is going to the volume pot. If you zoom in you will see. B Quote
Hellzero Posted yesterday at 19:33 Posted yesterday at 19:33 Indeed, the pickup wire is going to the volume, but at the wrong place... I think you don't understand a wiring diagram as you didn't follow it at all. The position, place and direction of each connector is mandatory. Quote
Silky999 Posted yesterday at 20:02 Posted yesterday at 20:02 For the Jack, I would rewire to the old Jack if possible Quote
Brian18242 Posted yesterday at 20:14 Author Posted yesterday at 20:14 As the previous jack was for passive electronics, should I be considered about wiring an active pickup to this? Quote
paul_5 Posted yesterday at 20:23 Posted yesterday at 20:23 (edited) Jack sockets for active basses need 3 connections - tip, ring and sleeve. This means that whenever a Jack lead is plugged in it forms a connection between the ring and sleeve which completes the power supply circuit - typically the ground connection, leaving the tip to carry the signal. This has the advantage of not drawing power from the battery whenever you unplug your lead. If the original socket only has 2 lugs then you’re going to need an awful lot of batteries… Edited yesterday at 20:23 by paul_5 1 Quote
Brian18242 Posted yesterday at 21:01 Author Posted yesterday at 21:01 Maybe difficult to tell from the photo but this is the passive Warwick jack, it looks to have 3 connections. On that basis, do you think it would work for and active EMG pickup? Quote
42Hz Posted yesterday at 21:46 Posted yesterday at 21:46 Yes, but check which is what of the terminals. 1 Quote
paul_5 Posted yesterday at 23:06 Posted yesterday at 23:06 Yes, check it. I’d use a known good stereo lead and a multimeter set to continuity or diode mode and see which one goes to tip, ring or sleeve. Quote
Brian18242 Posted 4 hours ago Author Posted 4 hours ago Got to be honest, most of the information shared is way over my head 😄 I never knew it would be so difficult to fit new pickups 😄 Is there a stereo output jack you can order separately that would fix the issue? If so, please share a link Quote

If so, please share a link The barrel jack you're holding will be fine, but as has already been explained to you, you need to figure out which of the three terminals is ring, sleeve and tip. If you get a new one, I'm willing to bet that it won't come with a guide - you'll be expected to know how to find out how to wire it correctly anyway. Quote
Brian18242 Posted 1 hour ago Author Posted 1 hour ago Next stupid question: Is there an easy way to tell which is the ring, sleeve, and tip or is it just plug in and try? Quote
