Identify this bass! (We all love these)

Remy Beauchamp's fretless he used in the death metal band Quo Vadis.

I still havent worked out what that fretless is or if they make a 5 string version, if anyone can help see the video at 40ish seconds for a close up..... of course mine would have to be the right way up :)

from 59 seconds onwards. Remys playing and sound gave me the idea to use a fretless in extreme genres and loving every minute of it.... now if only the pedulla can get that lovely sound as well, damn barts![/quote]

So can anyone figure out what bass it is?

Definitely custom with an interested headstock.

Do you play heavier music with a fretless? How do you manage to cut through and keep the fretless mwaaaah?

The headstock made me think Zon but the body doesn't seem to fit- I'm out.

I have practised with a fretless in my metal band (you can check my sig for some tunes) although I've not recorded or gigged with it- to be honest I didn't treat it any differently from playing fretted, but I don't go for the full Jaco-esque fretless tone; I prefer a smoother darker tone.

Agree it has bits of Zon, Pedulla and Veillette in there but pretty sure it isn't any of them.

Firstly though, the original quote asks about Remy Beauchamp. Isn't this Dominique "Forest" Lapointe? That's what the video suggests and from the date that would fit. From another thread I found there was a link to [url="http://www.quovadis.qc.ca/eng/news.shtml"]this[/url] page, where you can download three short hi-res videos (click on the pictures to download) plugging the DVD. Some slightly better closeups on that but only fleetingly.

The OP on the thread that gave the link to the videos also said that Lapointe was his bass teacher at the time, so he may know :)

You sir are correct! I allways assumed it was Remy as he also played fretless and played for the longest time compared to lapointe.

Ah well, lapointe is in a new project here.

However he is using a fretted bass in the this band.

Note here is his new bass, which has the same mark on the upper horn that the green fretless has. Theres also a better shot of the headstock with a logo. Though i cant tell what it says.

A question for the heavy fretless guys, how do you get on with hearing yourself for pitch and intonation, I'm not suggesting that because it's fretless we have to have flawless intonation etc, etc, far from it...play it how you feel I say.......but doesn't it get tricky with a heavy band to hear what's going on with a fretless?

I know a young player who uses fretless with his super heavy band, how he does it I'll never know. I have to be able to hear everything when using my fretless in a live situation just so I can feel confident enough that my pitch isn't [i]too[/i] far out.

This is probably not a good representative clip of my band. (IF you listen with very good subs/speakers you can definitely hear the low end coming from the bass. Read on if you can :) )

However there are two things to watch out for when trying to cut through. For a few months i tried boosting my mids and treble to cut through, it just didnt work at all. Too much and it sounded very scratchy and whenever it was just the bass just playing it was awful to listen to.

I paired up the current 1x15 i was using with another 1x15 and there was an instant improvement. Why? More bottom end, you have to have a rig that can steer clear of the bass heavy guitars and completely undercut them, Add a little mids and you should be set! I completely undercut the rest of the band now. There is still room for improvement with the dusty end of the fretboard, hence why i have invested in a 4x10 to go with one my 1x15's see if i can get some nice Mids out of the tweeter and 4x10's. With any luck i will be replacing the bartolini electronics with something a bit more suited for cutting through.

Another method of cutting through is to play slightly off the actual note, not enough to detract from the song, just a little, it actually helps amazingly well to cut through.

Oh and another method is to play something other then root notes!

To make sure i am in pitch takes practice, know the songs, have enough bottom end to "feel" the vibration of the note. Plus lines help :rolleyes:

We'll be recording very soon after i finish writing a few more songs. Hopefully the Pedulla is up for the job :lol:

Hello Jase,

I 'm assuming you mean in a live situation. I used to play a Jazz fretless in a very heavy band with a lot of time and key changes, but it was a lined 'board so I never had too much of a problem. Being very heavy music, if the pitch was a little out here and there I don't think anyone would have noticed. Your music is a different proposition though because you've got a lot of light and shade going on, so you are going to be much more audible than I would have been. I think its probably down to good monitoring and good technique (not that I had much of either). I found I could hear and feel the oscillations on longer notes if I was too far out of pitch, and corrected it gently like it was deliberate.

I use fretless on a few tracks for my band Demagogue - we're reasonably heavy/extreme. The fretless seems to cut through when necessary without me doing anything special in terms of amp or eq, even though there are two guitars.

With regards to intonation, the fretboard is lined, so I have to be 'eyes down' and make adjustments as necessary. Maybe my ear for intonation is actually crap and in fact, I'm usually out, but I've found that I don't have too many problems staying in pitch. I did used to play trombone, so perhaps that helps?

I use a passive Bass Collection copy that I got de-fretted a few years back. Sounds pretty nice considering how old it is and how cheap it was.

There should be at least one track (The Last Betrayal) with fretless on our myspace page (see my signature), so see what you think.
