Editing 'for sale' posts to remove everything.

Question

Posted

The 'for sale' section here is a really valuable resource. The previous listings contain what is surely the second-biggest archive of sold basses in the UK after ebay and the best archive of, you know, good basses that you might actually want. However, often when something is sold a seller will just remove everything. The details, the images, the price, the condition. This makes it difficult to value something you want to sell, difficult to track a unique bass' history and difficult to find information about something you've just purchased. Of course most of this applies to amps and the other for sale sections too, just there tends to be fewer unique or rare pieces in the other forums.

Is there maybe a way this could be stopped? Maybe just limiting the ability to edit posts in those sections? I get that it is probably hard to do from a technical stand point as the system can't discern the difference between correcting a typo and deleting the whole text. I also understand that the bloat of old posts probably contributes a load on the basschat servers.

But like, it just seems such a waste.

I think it is a waste, and would encourage people to leave them as a locked thing, but there is nothing to stop someone editing their posts, and if someone doesn't want their images there they can just remove them and there isn't anything that can be done about it. Luckily it is only a small minority of posts that go like that

And if you don't delete the images, you will reach your allowed space limit quite quickly.

When my items are sold, I only remove the images for that reason, the rest is remaining, if there was a way to let them without reaching my allowed space limit, I would do so...

Agreed. Also while it makes sense that people remove photos as we all have limited capacity on our accounts, I've always found it unusual to the point of being suspicious when people remove all the descriptive text as well

I used to post images (photos or whatever...) hosted externally, so as not to load BC servers, or my 'quota', with stuff. It worked for many tears, but I've stopped doing that, now, as my 'host' site, Imgur, have made it very difficult to have an ID and keep it, without having to change Pwd every too often. To such a point that I don't now know how to log into there, and couldn't find any Help from them. I've lots of stuff there, but copied it over to Google (not so good as a host, but they don't mess me about, so...). As it happens, I post far fewer images these days, but for those wishing to post a lot, consider hosting the pics elsewhere..? Not Imgur, though, obviously. B|

I've done this in the past and had the same issues as you Douglas, so stopped...

Is there any way ownership of the photos in the sales forums can be removed from the user's total when a sale thread is closed?
