Got myself a cheap amp for £80!

Behold! an Ashdown MAG 250. 
 

it was a 10 minute drive and was decent to play for a few minutes. Something for a newbie like myself to get started on.  
 

 

it is perhaps too late to ask what you guys think of these, as I’ve already got the amp but what won me was the option to add a cab for 500w total power  plenty for future pub gigs eh?

I had the 300 for years and it never let me down, it actually put me on quite an ashdown journey though lots of their amps and cabs over the years, they have a great after sales reputation too

That's a great deal. I owned an Ashdown EB 150, which was a beginners combo similar to your's, with a 15 inch speaker. I used it for years and partnered with another 15 inch cab it could be really loud.

 

I still really like the Ashdown sound.

Great purchase at an amazing price!! You will have loads of fun with it. I’m a fan of the ABM 300 evo iv tone I’ve played. It’s heaven for a pbass with flats tone. Warm yet it has so much clarity for fingerstyle playing.

It creates a woolley mess of low frequencies.  As far as I can figure they ostensibly represent the higher harmonics of the note an octave below the one you played.

Yeah I found that if playing something like In The City by The Jam, which starts on the C on the G string, then adding in a bit of this function - say 8 o’clock on the control- works fine, adding a bit more body to the sound, but any more than that I find unusable.
