What, Why, Where, Which, Who and When?!?

So, I was looking through my favourites (like a proper geek) trying to find something I was talking about in another thread; and instead stumbled upon this website:

www.alfonsoiturra.com

.... whereupon I discovered this curious instrument:

(this is going to all end up pretty meaningless if the pics don't work of course - just tried uploading them as attachments and nothing appears to have happened yet?!?)

anyway, it is an undoubtedly beautiful instrument, crafted to an exceptional standard, but..... What's it all about? It seems to be a kind of mini scale Ashbory-esque fretted singlecut with six BIG FAT METAL strings! and by my calculation, made from at least 21 different pieces of wood (not including knobs). I'm sure it'd look great amongst the collection but not so sure I'd end up playing it very often......

.... any ideas anyone?

interesting indeed !

it would make for a cool travel bass if the lowest string was tuned to E, for example, then you'd have all the range of a 4 string but in a much more compact package - handy for lugging round the underground

I'll save those pics and consider experimenting with something similar myself :)

That has got to be the most frustrating luthier web site ever!

Stupid over-use of Flash with the designer just showing off the latest pointless effect they've mastered. I'm sure there are some really nice basses there but I couldn't be bothered to sit through the s l o w transitions from one screen to the next to get to them.

I f someone can give me a URL for an HTML version of the site I'll have another look. (I couldn't see one)
Educate me: why is an HZ not a real EMG? 'Cos they're passive? Or 'cos they're not actually made in the EMG factory but somewhere else?
I believe the HZ pickups where originally built as OEM models for the likes of ESP, Schecter etc., but EMG have since launched them as after market pickups.
I don't think there's going to be a huge difference in quality, however they are passive as you mentioned and as a result come in at a lower price point.
I've seen them used on some pretty expensive basses, including a couple of £1400 Shukers, so I don't think they're going to be that crap, they're probably just provide a passive alternative to the active EMGs.

That's my 2p anyway...

Cheers,
Eude

Bassmandan has pointed out that my PO Modded Hohner B2B (for sale) could become one of those - for a lot less money too :)
