MacDaddy Posted March 15, 2024 Posted March 15, 2024 Following on from the How Was Your Gig/Rehearsal/Audition threads, it's about time we had a How Was Your Recording Session thread. Details to include: Pic and/or description of what you had for breakfast that day (because what's life without whimsy?). Name of band. Name of studio. Gear used. Tell us how it went. Quote
MacDaddy Posted March 15, 2024 Author Posted March 15, 2024 Yesterday I was in Ghost Town Sound studio in north London with The Royal Blues. We were in to do 3 songs, but just to get the bass and drums down. Vox and guitar were booked for another session. My plan was to use 2 basses to get a Nashville tic tac type sound, with one of my Shuker's and my Rob Allen Mouse. But as there was a bass in the studio and I was using public transport I just took the Mouse. The studio bass was a nice looking vintage Fender P, pics at the bottom. There was a bit of adjustment using a 34", as my basses are either mid or short scale, but the problem was an action you could drive a bus under, and that is not the angle of the pic, the string alignment is out. It sounded great, but perhaps not suitable for the tic tac, I'll see how much of my doubling ends up in the mix. The session did not start well. The drummer was having difficulty and it took 4 hours to get enough drums to be able to compile a full take. After a food break we did another song, which was recorded quite quick, then we went back to the first song and he nailed it. After that the last song was done in plenty of time. I DI'd in to the desk, and my bass parts were done after a couple of run throughs. Pub after. Good day 😁 btw I asked permission to post pics of the bass. It's what he used when he was in Echobelly. 1 Quote

Cat Burrito Posted Sunday at 15:16 Posted Sunday at 15:16 We have a very popular "how was your last gig" thread and a growing rehearsal one, but I can't see a studio one. It's a different beast and I am happy to kick start things. It'd be great to hear other experiences of where you are and how you got on. Yesterday, we returned to Mooncalf Studios in Wiltshire, for our penultimate session for album no. 3. Playing gothic original material, we usually record the drum tacks and keys on GarageBand, take them to the studio to upload and tidy up, and then add the guitars / bass / vocals. We uploaded the last three songs and recorded the bass and vocals. I used my Fender Jazz USA (2008) and my Squier Bass VI for the bass parts. I also got to use a Jerry Jones Sitar guitar that we had hired for the princely sum of one bottle of red wine. Oh, and I added a simple part on my David Bowie Stylophone. The sitar took a few runs. Mainly because I was writing the part whilst in the studio. The bass all went down in one take with no overdubs, across all three tracks. That doesn't always happen but it is nice when it does. I also did a few lead vocal lines, which went down pretty easily. We have three guitar parts and one of my vocal parts to do and the album is done. Anyhow, enough about me... who else has a recent studio session that they'd care to share? 9 Quote
BigRedX Posted yesterday at 07:36 Posted yesterday at 07:36 In my home studio putting the finishing touches to the drum programming for another new song. We now have 5 new songs to work on for when we are next back in the rehearsal room. 1 Quote
NancyJohnson Posted yesterday at 07:59 Posted yesterday at 07:59 My session (four days ago), was good. It was nice to just be creating after a period of not really playing so much because of health/hand related issues. Hopefully back in on Wednesday. 1 Quote

WinterMute Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago Not bad at all, installed a new mic last week and spent a couple of hours getting used to it, it's the UAD modelling mic and it brings quite a different range of tones to the party... 1 Quote

Another dock taking up valuable screen real estate on the bottom of the main display. And really big too! IMO dock icons should be no bigger than desktop icons. If that was my set up I'd have it stacked vertically on the right hand side of the upper secondary display. Quote
WinterMute Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Good job it's not your set up then, be a shame if you had something else to criticise, eh? Not short of screen real-estate, in any phase of the recording process, and most of the work is done dynamically through the S3 controller. You do you, I'm more than happy with my studio. 1 Quote

Sorry if it came across as a criticism, it was an observation, and TBH yours isn't too bad. I regularly see people with Mac laptops with the dock at the bottom of the screen much larger than that. I come from a graphic design background where every vertical pixel is at a premium and the dock takes up way too much space for very little interface benefit. For me having the dock shifted to the right hand side of my tertiary screen allows me get two more tracks on the arrange page in Logic without the need for scrolling. Out of interest have you ever given any thought to the placement of the dock or have you just left it in the default position as set by Apple? Quote
