James Genus on 'Sponge' with the Brecker Brothers. Unique slap solo later on (4.00m) but I particularly like the manicness of the whole piece with an underlying groove the whole way through.

I'll see if I can find a few more, as this isn't that high up my list of favourite grooves. I particularly like Herbie Hancock piece 'Actual Proof'. I have a different version by Steve Jenkins but it's just so much more sedate than the HH one.

I prefer the drumming on the stan clarke video - Steve Gadd is playing with some formidible dynamics and finesse.

Eubassix had the ex-Ndegeocello Celinder, I don't know if he's sold it yet.

This is one of my faves of Sharay Reed which I've posted before. There's no mistaking that he's playing a bass line rather than soloing, its distinctive, inventive and completely in the pocket, with a great balance between notes and space. I think this is one of the greatest basslines I've ever heard in my life. I've played this clip hundreds of times and the hair still goes up on the back of my neck each time.

I've just found another with Sharay Reeds playing on it at a drum workshop being held by Michael Weatherspoon

The best for me is Christian McBride. It's clean and understated. Readily accessible to people like me who aren't into what I call deep jazz. Stanley Clarke seemed initially to be playing games with the drummer. Maybe it's an ego thing. Oh well.

One question for you jazzers out there. Why do bassists (in particular) seem so reticent to come out and play when it's time for their solos. I know there's got to be a leader somewhere, and it's not the light & shade of the piece, but when Joshua Redman stopped blasting away, in stepped Christian McBride and carried on playing at the same volume as when he was in the background. If I had that ability I'd want to stand up and be heard too.
Is it just a case of the manager and the managed or just a jazz tradition? I have 3 Ray Brown albums downstairs and even as a leader he seems to do the same thing. I have to keep reaching for the volume control.

Yea, nice bass grooves in general, but jazz bass is so frustrating. Let your groove be heard.

Balcro.

It is indeed. I'm not the biggest fan of Mike Stern's sound, or even his playing to be honest, at least the stuff I've seen. His tone reminds me of the guitar equivalent of Jeff Berlin, awash with chorus and reverb. And there's a huge amount of blues in his playing, except I don't feel his tone complements it. Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Why is it when someone asks you what your favourite grooves are you can never remember them?!

That lazy feel and tone reminded me of this filthy stuff:

Then I looked it up and realised it was also Meshell. DUHH!

Meshell's Celinder was amazing, I'd love to ut an order down for one if I could.

Tal Wilkenfeld is a superb player.

Pino Palladino with D'Angelo.

And last but not least, (I know he got posted about above, but he deserves another mention), Paul Turner from Jamiroquai, my favourite bass player right now. I met him the other day, he's an incredibly friendly guy and very informative. Stuart Zender is still my bass hero, but it doesn't make Paul anything less than an incredible player.

EDIT - no idea how to embed videos so there's the links!
