Harking back to one of my earlier posts [What constitutes a build diary?], I think this project truly encompasses the spirit of a home build, by someone who has the tools, knowledge and ability to do the job. This is exactly what I was trying to get over in my original post. Al has built [himself] a great looking bass, on a reasonably tight budget and for all the right reasons.

It looks great. Well done.
Great build diary. Does it get the classic Rickenbacker sound (clank, clank)? What do you think really contributes to the Rick bass sound? I've been wondering what taking a basic neck-thru and simply replacing the pickups with Rick ones would create...
Thanks! It really does have that Ric percussive edge. I think all aspects of the design work together to give this - the thru-neck, the mostly maple, the ric pickups and the bridge construction as well as the electronics. I've not tried the ric pickups elsewhere but they make a very impressive tone.

I have only just seen this thread. Fantastic work.

I had a rick-inspired home build, made by a friend:-

I have some similar build diary pics (somewhere).

I also wanted it black - but he was very reluctant to have paint over the wood!!!

I may yet do it one day - I wouldn't tell him I'd done it though.

If I were capable of doing this, I'd build one with chequered binding, horseshoe and toaster pickups, full width inlays an, yes, probably in black!

Please, as much as love Black Ricks that would be a crime to cover up that wood.

Beautiful mate.

I've only just seen this thread as well following the rickenfaker thread mention. Shouldn't we be putting this as a sticky or something in salute to Al's incredible work? His other one is even nicer in my opinion. How someone can do that in their home is absolutely amazing.

Cheers - but it's supposed to look more like this:-
