This is the bit I don't like...

'● We also monitor the noise from a number of other locations outside the marquee on an hourly basis to determine if the level of noise is too much (ie. is traveling to our neighbours). While using the decibel monitor is useful some music or vocals travel more than others so please bear with us if we ask you to turn down certain aspects.'

Bass frequencies travel. There's nothing you we can do about that. This means that 200m from the venue, all you can probably hear is bass. If you turn down only the bass, in reaction to this, then within the performance area the band mix will be altered and the bass will probably just disappear.
What needs to happen, in these circumstances, is that the whole band needs to turn down, not just the bass. Then the band mix in the venue may be quieter but at least it will be balanced.

^^^ Yup, this is back to what I said about this stuff needing professional input.
Had a pub once where the music levels were set inside the main music bar, not outside where the neighbours were - madness -
but this is what happens when the local authority thinks they know what they are doing..........

This is entirely the case here. The venue is a farm and theyve only done weddings for a few years. They've clearly had a noise complaint and gone to someone claiming to be an "acoustic specialist" who has simply sold them some expensive gear and filled their heads with guff. End result is a venue that basically isn't fit for purpose now.

This will be why they have stipulated no bass backline and have provided 18" subs.

It's sounds more like they have done their research and know how to control the aspects that will cause a nuisance if they go unchecked.

Haha just had an email from the venue saying:

"In order to maintain the aesthetic charm of our facility and to be as professional as possible we require bands and DJs to have all equipment on site and vehicles parked in our car park away from the marquee by 10.30am. All sound checks must be completed by midday".

Well as our contract with the client states 6pm arrival for the band I have firmly but politely told him we are unavailable earlier (we genuinely are unavailable earlier)and to contact the bride's mother (who booked us) if he has a problem with that. Definitely will be quoting a whole lot more to clients in future if they want us at this venue.

Unloaded by 10.30am?! Soundchecked by midday?!

Ok, now I understood the sound limiter and PA point they were making which was fair enough but I'm sorry, a 10.30am load in would be an absolute deal breaker for us, especially with day jobs and families etc. Added to this, I presume that they're guaranteeing the thousands of quid of equipment will be secure in the 8 or 9 hours between the soundcheck and ACTUALLY taking the stage to perform? Or are they expecting the band to hang around?

Sorry. The venue is being absolutely ridiculous. None of the hundreds of weddings we've done over the years don't function like that. 6pm setups are the standard for entertainment, sometimes a little earlier but not THAT early.

Depends on the contract you've already signed depends on how you handle it. If it's between you and the agency/couple and you've agreed in writing on a 6pm setup, I'd be pushing it back to them to argue the toss with the venue.

We've just received an email from a hotel for our gig on Friday which is pretty much word for word to this. Made me chuckle when I read it, thinking of this thread.

Ours said "Speakers should not be placed directly on the floor but on a raised surface. Bass level should be kept to a low level at all times".

Time to crack out the beer crate. Methinks I'm not going to enjoy Friday night!

One of the side issues is when you perform at wedding gigs, you often get further bookings from attendees if you perform well.

If you aren't allowed to perform well, it's likely to cost you business.

Which is something of a pisser when it's down to factors beyond your control.

The thing that makes this whole thing more annoying is that this venue is less than 2 miles from Silverstone race circuit. This weekend is the Silverstone Classic so at the same time we are trying really hard to control the volume in a marquee on a remote farm, Live Wire, Reef and The Stranglers will be tearing it up on a stage nearby equipped with a 40KW sound system. We will probably be able to hear them as we play lol
