Probably my favourite track from Peter Gabriel's 'Up' album, and this is an amazing version and demonstrates the power that is present in a classical orchestra. Reminds me why I love music and being a musician so much. Because of the economics involved in maintaining one, and the relative decline in popularity of classical music a lot of people haven't had the chance to experience the sheer power of a live orchestra. Neither of my daughters, who are 20 and both musicians, have seen a full orchestra live. I've been trying to remedy that. [/quote] If they're students or under 26 then they can get to see the London Philharmonic for just a few pounds. I've been a couple of times and only paid about a fiver each time . gelfin Posted April 6, 2014 Share Posted April 6, 2014 Just love hearing a full orchestra live. I'm lucky, we two great venues in Cardiff, St David's Hall and the Wales Millenium Centre. On a funny note. I went to see/hear Stravinsky's Firebird suit. Which is one of my favourites. Just as the finale starts there is a forlorn note on the french horn, which always makes my arm hairs stand on end. As it was played I let out an overloud groan of satisfaction / pleasure. At the end the group of people in front of me turned around and said, " you really enjoyed that, didn't you" I could only agree and apologise. Even more, the performance was recorded. bubinga5 Posted April 7, 2014 Share Posted April 7, 2014 (edited) my dad was the musical director for a NewZealand orchestra, as he is very old fashioned. and heavily into Bach, Stravinsky, Debussy. he wanted me to play the piano. i didn't want to at the time.. but i did years later, after 12 years of playing the bass. i showed him this piece of music 2 years ago, and it made him cry. orchestration is hugely powerful, ..it can be used in such a powerful way in other genres, as Ambient has posted. i love this piece of music. it does put a tear in my eye. its the strings that i find very moving. deepbass5 Posted April 7, 2014 Share Posted April 7, 2014 Having come from Trombone into Function bands prior to playing Bass I was fortunate to play in the county Orchestra, and have to say you sit there after the final note and think did we make that sound. It is addictive even if you have to count more bars rest than you actually play. I should mention that half the Orchestra was made up from the local Girls grammar school. Perhaps not quite the same, but I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean "live" at the Royal Albert Hall last weekend. The film is projected onto a screen and the music is done with a live orchestra. It adds that extra dimension hearing the music live, as the composer would have done. I was in the circle so could barely see the orchestra, but boy could you hear them. I also saw Fellowship of the Ring like this too although sadly missed the other LOTR films.
