If I were you I'd be looking on the secondhand market. You can get some fantastic basses new for this kind of money or even less (Squire VM and MM SUBs for example) but with basses like G&Ls, Yamahas, Overwater/Tanglewood going for that kind of money, I'd check them out. The other thing is to make sure that your mate tries before he buys and don't be hung up on the name on the headstock. Ibanez and Tokai for example make some great copies. Once you try a bass, you'll know if it's worth your £350 or not :)

Some great basses by makers like Cort and Aria that have virtually no resale value so can be real secondhand bargains.

And Cort make G&L Tributes, Lakland Skylines, some Fender and Ibanez models so the pedigree is there. The GB74 is a fantastic "Jazz'a like" but with a Jazz/MM pickup combination and coil tapping.

Yes, GB74 is a great bass. Can't believe they get overlooked in the headlong rush to Squier, they are far superior IMO.

The G&L L-2000 does have a baseball bat of a neck though, and it has to be mentioned as a lot of folks simply won't be able to cope with that.

I think "baseball bat" is a bit misleading. The necks are about 44mm wide but the depth, back-to-front, (on mine) is about 21mm making it fairly easy to play - as long as you can live with the 44mm neck width.

Oops - looks like the same bass as mentioned here - http://forum.westoneguitars.net/t4551-westone-thunder-iii-bass
Don't touch it!

A good Thunder II would be worth it mind...

This is his criteria:

4 strings
nothing weirdly shaped
he is learning slap, and is really digging that style (not just a fad, he's been practicing for a while)
like the musicman style pickup sound.
Was looking at the squire VM jazz.

I'm pretty stuck as I've not been in the bass buying market for a while, so what do you recommend? I said go 2nd hand, but what is good for £350 these days? I also thought about something with an active pickup if he really wants to get that slap bass tone.

He might even be along as I suggested coming here for a wee browse.

For £350? And a MusicMan pickup sound?

A MusicMan SUB, second hand. The USA made ones between 2003-2006 (black back of the neck, black headstock, slab body and textured paint job), not the newer Sterling by MusicMan ones (although they are not horrible).

I can't think of better value for money than a USA MM SUB, really. They can be found for £350. If budget can be stretched to £400, then it will be easy to find one, as they tend to go for 350-400.

I own a Stingray and two SUBs, there really isn't any difference other than cosmetics etc. They are the real thing.
