Concentric knobs on a 62 Jazz

I bought a white with tort pickguard '62 RI MIJ jazz bass last year. It's a great bass and very light and bright-sounding But has been slightly relic'd and poorly done in my opinion so I was thinking what the best option for a make-over could be.
I've been looking at jazzes online for ideas and I like the idea of putting on a control plate with two concentric knobs. I think it looks great on the vintage basses.
Where would I buy such a control plate replacement?

Also, are there any good guitar guys out there who could improve on the relic job done to my bass or even give it an aged refin in another colour?
I'd be very tempted to have it in sonic blue with the previous colour showing through here and there.

Also, If anyone has attempted something similar I would love to read your comments and see the results.

Cheers.

The 'three-hole bell-plate', as it's known, is pretty rare. They do pop up on evilbay from time to time for around £20! Try GRGuitars and OnlyMusic in the 'States; they're your best bet for the whole shebang. The latter will have the correct cap and resistors in place so bear in mind IF you decide to fit a harness with those components, the bass will sound a little less bright. Maybe run a mail past Onlymusic first or check their stuff on USA ebay.

Sonic blue is my fave colour but you'd have to go with a white/black/white guard...

Splendid 66´ Jazz Bass reissue ! Dots, binding, matching headstock and sonic blue !

Concerning concentric knobs, i play a 62 American Reissue JB, loaded with flats, and i let the 2 tones fully opened most of the time. I don't use concentric tones with that bass whereas i often use the single tone knob on my classic 3 knobs 1972 JB. Just a remark.

Some lovely looking basses turning up in this thread - the sonic '66 gives me goosebumps (the bass was in Rumbleseat in the US for a while I think). The sonic stack knob is also gorgeous. Back on topic, there's a lot of info/details around Basschat on a '62 re-issue J that was re-sprayed in shell pink - a lovely job undertaken by the original owner, Kevin Lindsay (the bass is on sale on here now I think).

Maybe have a go yourself - nitro paint cans are available from Steve Robinson in Manchester - there are instruction videos on Steve's site to assist the process? If you can get a result similar to the sonic above, I'll be insanely jealous!

Actually the whole thing of a refin, refurb came from my brother-in-law who is a spray-painter to trade.
He looked at its current finish and suggested doing something.
Im hoping to rope him in to doing the priming and painting.
I just do the arty stuff like colour choice and sourcing parts, haha.

I imagine I will have to have a lefty mint green pickguard made too.

What a fantastic thread! After sonic blue I reckon shell pink is my next fave colour... got to love the matching head....

Makes me want to go ahead and refin my 62... too far gone though...grrr.

Yeah I've just stacked mine, Fender USA 2000 Jazz (i think). I love the tonal variation with having tone control on each pick up....far superior to the one tone in my opinion. I get a lovely soul warm tone with the bridge tone rolled off but the neck tone up....yeah two tone all the way :).

Does anyone currently have a stack knob jazz?

How does it compare to the standard for tonal variation?
Depends on how it's wired. You can do it like a standard 2vol. 2tone or like the originals with the resisters and all. Mine is the original style wiring and its very different. It sounds the same with all controls full on. But the tone controls seem to reduce the highs and lows and are overall more subtle than a standard tone control. They kind of tighten things up.

Kiogon on this forum made me a twin stack knob arrangement for my Antoria Jazz bass (inc new plate). His work has chocolate block screw-in connectors for the pickup wires. Should be easy enough to add some chocblocs to your exisiting Jazz and then you have the simplest of changeovers imaginable.

Please click on the link in my sig for some pics.

I think this setup works really well as you have so much more flexibility than the standard V/V/T. My have different cap values for each tone control to give that bit more variety.

Kevin Lindsay is your man. He is the guy who created the pink Jazz of Haimsey's you were admiring. Lives in central Scotland too.
