The Urge to change....

I've started this thread as I'd really like some get some thoughts on a bass issue....

Over the last few months or so, I've been wanting to really concentrate on getting the basses that can stay with me long-term. I'm the very proud owner of a Sei 7 and I'm having an ACG 9 made now. Thing is, I've got a space that I want to fill...

What I've been thinking of is switching my Fender Urge Mk1 for a more 'traditional' J-style 5 string....question is which one ??

I haven't decided on anything yet, but just wanted to get some opinions on what would be a good bass for the role. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated !!

Cheers,
Mark

There aren't any "traditional"-style basses that look sensible as a five string IMHO - they either look naff and weird or they look modern as a consequence of the fatter neck. I would go with the suggestion above of the L2500, just because it's the most versatile bass you can buy. They're very dull-looking though.

Thanks for the suggestions !!

WithoutRisk_BassPlayer - I might sell the Urge if I can find some sort of replacement. Thing is, the Urge's are so easy to play and they don't make the 32" scale version anymore.

I suppose the problem is that as players we can't have everything so have to think what would be most useful !!

Just had a look using Google and someone's selling a Mk1 Urge for $1900. Looks like I might be able to get a classy replacement after all !!

If i may put a few words in!

I've looked at Jazz basses a lot, and there's plenty of nice ones around! I've played a few Sadowsky's and Sei's, not played an Overwater yet, nor an Avella...but the one's that stood out to me the most are Mike Lull Jazz basses, they are awesome pieces of kit! Not only that, but brand new, from the UK supplier a 5 string passive one is £1300! That's an awesome price in my mind! Mind you, you might not want to spend that much. In which case the Sandbergs aren't too bad, although they're pick-ups and pre-amps don't really add to the 'traditional' theme!

There's plenty of them about though, and there's a number of top-notch ones that i've not mentioned. But for me, the Lull's are a wicked instrument, i'd rather have a Lull than a Sadowsky, that's for sure!

Forgot to say that one other to mention are the Atelier Z's...they're wicked basses! I played Ari's a few years back, loads of bark, but weighed a tonne!!! He said he prefered it to Gwilym's Sadowsky Tokyo Jazz, although, i love them, much nicer in my opinion than the newer models...anyway, Ari's conclusion was that the Atelier sounded more 70's jazz like than the Tokyo!

I seen the Sei Jazz's which would be perfect as I'm already a Sei fan. I've been following a thread on TB for the Mike Lull owners club. There's also a couple on the website's of a couple of stores in the States.

It definately seems that the Urge Mk1's are sought after so I'll get some pics together, put it up fs/ft and see what happens...

You might like to talk to Rich on here about his 5 string Shuker Jazz.

It's not for sale but it's a fabulous Jazz-style bass. Loads of people on here have played it at bashes and there's always a chorus of praise afterwards.
Also Bassdirects's (Poptart) Nordy's

I have played quite a few brands of basses and there are a LOT of good ones out there. Sadowskys are great but if it were me I would be seriously looking at a Nordy VJ5 ( I have one with another being built) or if you can find one a Celinder. Not much will beat either of those in my opinion. I have heard great things about the Skjolds and of course Shukers but havent played either. Lastly Alleva Coppollo always get rave reviews but again hard to find!

Thanks for the replies :)

I've been to Jon Shuker's place but unfortunately, we were in a rush and couldn't stay very long. I just collected my new de-fretted Conklin GT-7 and had to leave, so I haven't played one either. I've heard fantastic reviews of the Nordy's from guys who tried them at NAMM. The only one in the list that I've actually played is Sadowsky. I have to admit that the Metro I played was much better than I thought it was going to be.

Would anyone say that the 'Metro' label take would put them off buying one ??

Unfortunately, it's going to have to be a straight change from Urge to 'whatever' as I don't have cash to put towards it. Should be able to grab something really great though.

Definately not. All of the ones I have played have been fantastic.

Thanks for the reply, birdy. I think Guitar Guitar have some in so I'll pop in and check them out.

I've now got the Urge up in the classified section, I thought I'd put a pic here as well so people can see it in all it's glory :)
