Can't be done.............

I'm a Rotosound kinda guy really like them and used them for donkey's. Can you buy a 5 string set in the centre of Liverpool? Can you buggery.

Curly Music - yes mate there you go! (me) Er that's a 4 string set. (CM) Oh sorry, nah we've not got any 5 string sets but we'll be getting some in soon.

Dawson's - Rotosound? Ooooh, erm, sorry no got some D'Addario.

Guess I'm just going to have to boil them (again)

Edited - so waht do others do especially any 5 stringers in the Pool?

Well thanks chaps. I guess it was the Stringbusters thread that compelled me to create this thread. I'd really like to be able to walk in to my local music store and buy what I need but sadly I can't and it's so disappointing. Rushworths, Hesseys even Micro Music on Smithdown Road were worth a punt back in the day.

And my typing is getting worse - 2 edits to correct typos

Why do you think the Beatles moved to London as soon as they got the chance ? Exactly - they were exhausted from walking round Liverpool looking for bleedin' strings !

Why? It's not like you can try strings out. Stringbusters will usually deliver within two days. They are very good indeed.

sorry to hijack the thread, but my recent experience of buying online has not been good, took money agreed to dispatch today, stayed in all day and it turns out the item is not in stock, and i only found that after i called, no one bothered to contact me

Online shopping is only good if the item is in stock

Guitar shops in Liverpool are poop. Especially for bass. You could try Moran sound.

Gateacre is quite close to home but not convenient during normal office hours and their opening times seem a bit eclectic to say the least. Whilst they are " the oldest music shop" in Liverpool I've no reason to suspect they are any better stockwise

So this thread is over - I'm off to Stringbusters :) .

Local shops can bog off, they've never done anything for me. They even, through the mince amp they let me use managed to put me off a bass which I now own and think is great. Screw you, shops.

That truly sucks dude :( Luckily the majority of shops I've been to recently have all been great! Two that stick out the most are Academy Of Sound in Stoke, and PMT in Manchester. Staff in both of these stores went out of their way to make sure I got to try out what I wanted to, with no pushy sales techniques.

In fairness, you can't expect a local shop to cater for specialist needs. They have to go for stock that turns around and earns them money. That 6-string set of double-ball end, half-wounds is not going to shift quickly and earn them money. It's not 1985 any more and bass, especially extended range is a niche pursuit - perfect for the Internet which aggregates that fractured market to make it viable, on the other hand terrible for the High Street.

That said, as the last poster mentioned, along the M62 from Liverpool you've got PMT, Dawsons (Warrington & Manchester) & Sound Great (more M56 admittedly), all of which should be able to help out.

I was about to suggest Moran Sound too - they have a decent selection of strings in (although I don't play a 5 so couldn't tell you off the top of my head - worth a quick phone call though).

It's also much more pleasant to visit than the big'uns in town. It's a little family run business and there's always a warm welcome. They're very happy to help, make time for the kids when I've been with the family in tow, and don't make you feel awkward for browsing round the expensive stuff when they know you're only buying plectrums. I try and go there for all my little bits and pieces, even if it costs a pound or two more than online - they always knock me a couple of quid off for buying multiple packs of strings as well.

EDIT: I remember them telling me they liked to keep flats and those funny nylon wound bass strings in "just in case" so not inconceivable that they'll stock fivers too. Plenty of Rotosound hanging on the wall.
