My March entry.

I was thinking running computer games, irritating 'ear worm' melody, low tech sound sources and endless, irritating repetition.... frankly, I think I have nailed it!! B) I dare you not to hate it by the end..... :yarr:

That's not a million miles away from the actual Angry Birds theme! It definitely has 'ear worm' qualities ;)

Are the tuba and xylophone from Miroslav? I actually like the sound of them.

No - Edirol Orchestral. Interestingly, the sounds from MP were too convincing and I needed it to be slightly less rich in overtones etc. It had to stink of cheese to work! It was an interesting part of the exercise. I wrote the piece in Sibelius (with drums) and then created a midi file which I exported to Cubase. When I was looking for sounds to play with the midi file, I struggled to find the 'cheap' sounds I wanted. The ones in Sibelius were perfect but they aren't available when I open Cubase. I have never actually wanted them to be before so that's a new thing. Goes to show you never can tell....

Just listened to it. The real one is a lot more sophisticated than mine. I was thinking of the original Super Mario Brothers era games (the last one I played) which were really low-tech. Things have moved on, it seems!

Yep, that's the same era of games I'm going to be taking inspiration from. 8 and 16-bit stuff. I've only just started sketching something out, and so far the tricky point has been creating sounds that are convincingly crappy! Still, it's proving to be fun :)

I used to make computer game music as a young teenager using old tracker software, so this month is a blast of nostalgia for me.

PS: forgot to mention that I liked what you'd put together for last month. Shame it was a late entry! I thought the choir parts could've been louder, but that's a minor grumble. It sounded great and matched the photo well. Nice change at the end with the staccato strings and snare drum. Reminded me a bit of Holst's Mars.

Interestingly Bilbo, to me your belated February intro sounded a lot more video gamey to, it may have just been the general MIDI sound, but that sounded like it was straight out of one of the PSX Final Fantasy's...

I considered going "video gamey" for this one, but after an hour in Reaper with an 8-bit synth VST it just felt forced, video game music to me has always been more than 8-bit synths, most of my favourite games have brilliant orchestral scores or a really atmospheric score. Ironically though, I'm not going with that either, I've got a lot of fast jumpy riffs coming to me so I think I'll go for something heavy that captures the energy. I was pretty impressed with some of the sounds I could get out of Guitar Pro 6 so I think I'll stick with that, even if it is a pain in the arse to use. I imagine I'll throw in a couple of quick samples to acknowledge the video game theme though.

Absolutely! I don't play many games these days (I had to choose between games and music when I became a father - no time for both - and I choose music ;)). But I used to play plenty. Some of the scores written for modern games are superb... the Hitman series, Halo, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, etc. It's one of the few places where contemporary classical music is actually being digested by young folk. Well, that and cinema. But you're absolutely right, it's anything but bleeps and blips these days.

However, I think there is a certain charm to old 8 and 16-bit computer music, particularly for people like me who grew up with it. The chiptune scene is still alive and well, and a lot of these 8-bit sounds still find their way into modern dance music (esp. genres like grime and dubstep).

This was always one of my favourites "back in the day". Ocean software used this track on a whole bunch of games as I remember. It sounds very dated now, but at the time it really wowed me and no doubt contributed to me venturing into electronica...

(You might want to to skip forwards on the video a little. The experience is very, erm, 'authentic').

The big titles these days are very much Symphonic/Cinematic fused with Rock and Electronic.
Of course the vintage vibe is still around, App games very much alive with this.

Two great libs for the Cinematic sound come from Project Sam, just superb....
The Multi patches combine Winds/Brass and Strings right across the Keyboard, which saves
using dozens of MIDI tracks - It saves a lot of time.
All the Articulation Key strokes are down in the C0/-C0 range, and can be played in real time or written in after.
Symphobia two and Symphobia one, along with True Strike[Their Percussion library].
Check out the Demo's.
I started playing my bass this morning before work and actually found myself with quite a depressing tune for this about ending a war
I'm imagining a melodic death metal cover of this... played in drop Cm tuning, or something :D

Bugger, didn't realise I was so out of practice, just spent last night running through some songs for a dep gig next month, and now have massive blister on my left little finger, can't play anything without screaming every 5 seconds. Maybe I should just put a mic in the room when I'm practicing on the upright, should sound pretty angry......

How's everyone getting on with this month's compositions?

Bilbo obviously got his finished early! I'm about mid-way through mine and trying to find time to work on it around my day job... which is currently also my night job as we're crazily busy at work (end of financial year bottleneck).

Anyway, I'll have something done in due course. Been messing around creating lots of 8 and 16-bit noises using an analogue-type virtual synth. All very retro. And surprisingly fun :)

Yes - retro noises are fun! Hence the continuing popularity of the P-Bass. ;)
Won't be doing a track this month though, unfortunately - reality his broken through again. Bloody reality! It's highly overrated. <_<
