Since I really started to get into bass ive always been impressed by 2 videos from youtube..

flight of a bumblebee on a 7 String

YYZ on a 6 string

the YYZ cover is my fav by far.

I very much doubt even if I spent the rest of my life doing nothing but learning that song id never master it. I picked up the tabs for it once, laughed and put my bass down.

I know most of you will say just learn your own stuff, I dont want to get into an argument about that. But what songs out there have you looked at and thought... Never in a million years..

Recently, that Simpsons theme that Stuart Clayton posted. It's not just the playing of it (which is insane), it's the working it out. There's a completely mental two-handed bit in it that really just scares the life out of me. I reckon that if I could play that, I could probably play anything, but I acknowledge that - even given all the time in the world just to practise bass - I'd never crack it.

my covers band want to do Sinatra/Ella Fitzgerald etc.'s "I get a kick out of you", but I just can't get my head round it at all- in my mind the vocal melody of the second part where the bass starts walking in double time just doesn't fit over the chords.
to me it's like maths in audio form- completely unnatural. I guess jazz just isn't my thing.

BLOOD ON THE WORLDS HANDS by iron maiden.
I saw steve harris do it live on a twin necked bass on the x-factor tour in the 90s although i wasn"t playing bass then but a few months ago got the tab for it and had a bash at it ( no chance ) it looks easy tabbed out but its the speed its played at that freaks me out, i will keep attempting it though regardless of how long it takes.
Just thought of one...
How many I help you by Sikth....
absolute madness...

Actually.. anything by Sikth or Primus!!!!!
I was listening to SikTh as I read that, and now I'm determined to give Scent of the Obscene another shot! I reckon learning it on bass has got to be easier than finding the other musicians to cover it!

Ready Freddie Washington's part from Forget Me Nots

I know loads of people seem to have this off pat but I've never been a slapper so can't even get close to a version like this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmlImQTRlio

I remember reading in interview with him years ago where he said it had earned him a fair old wedge of cash (and how many bass lines can you say that about?). He got a full writer's credit on the Patrice Rushen original and it's since been sampled by Will Smith for Men in Black, George Michael, Randy Crawford etc. giving him a true "multi-platinum" status as he gets writer's credits on all of their versions as well I think!

oh, YYZ - Rush, started learning it. OMG, I only ever pluck with 2 fingers, most 3 if im playing something stupidly fast like pulp fiction tune. I had to play with 4 and me no likey.

i had a go at YYZ and strangely i got the first bit, it wasnt the speed that i had an issue with but remembering all the slight differences.
I'd love to learn Woodpecker from mars by faith no more but the timing and feel of that track is hard, even billy gould said it was tricky and he wrote it :)
black betty by ram jam, no chance timing too weird for me.

There are some classics here!

Two of the guys who first got me wanting to play bass back in the early 70's were Chris Squire & Mike Rutherford.

Both Rickenbacker men in those days of course and amongst the few bass players that really cut through the murk of some of the mixes around at that time. Shame Rutherford decided he wanted to play lead all the time and they lost that wonderful punchy Rick sound.

Um - thinks to self - must get the nut repaired on my '73 Ricky, get a pick out & try some Yes & Genesis songs!
