discreet
Was looking at this only today, coincidentally. bertbass
The Musicians Union do free PLI up to £10,000,000 but only per person, not as a band so each member will have to join. Venues also want to see P.A.T. testing certificates.
xgsjx
I got some from New Moon Insurance for £25 for the year (that included insurance for just my bass as I had to insure something to get it). It's @ £75 for a 1 day cover!
bertbass
Just looked at the link and the MU membership fee is close to that for private PLI and you get some free instrument insurance with the MU. Other than that I think the MU is crap unless you play in an orchestra that is. This PLI thing suddenly appeared a few years ago and took us completely by suprize, surely, it's the venue that needs PLI, not the musicians but apparently not, we need it as well. Most if not all hotels and definitely every council owned venue, regardless of the function will require you to have PLI and PAT testing certificates. Pubs don't seem to bother. We were even asked for our risk assessments once and also for a document that I can't remember the name of and couldn't even find with google. crez5150
You'll find the Venue and the Musician will need PLI...... if they hire a room out for a private function then the hirer brings in the band for that function.... not covered by the hotel. Every band playing functions or weddings if worth their salt should have at least very basic PLI cover.
bertbass
If the hotel books the band direct for the hotel you'll still need PLI and you'll be turned away if you can't produce it.
deepbass5
Funny, We have only ever had drunk people fall on us and damage our equipment, not the other way round. MU is now £155 without double checking but you do get £1000 of instrument cover chucked in with your £10,000,000 of idiot insurance.
bertbass
Don't forget the lovely orange plastic card. I remember when we were turned away from gigs because we weren't union members. Even had our own promotion in a church hall cancelled for us by the vicar for the same reason. If a non union member turned up to play with union members they refused to play. I'm glad some things have changed over the years.
BassBunny
We have just renewed with these peeps. http://www.insurance4performingarts.co.uk/ Years cover, £75 for £2M or £125 for £5M cover. Instrument insurance is reasonable as well.
ThomBassmonkey
Funny, We have only ever had drunk people fall on us and damage our equipment, not the other way round. MU is now £155 without double checking but you do get £1000 of instrument cover chucked in with your £10,000,000 of idiot insurance.
The MU gives £2,000 of unspecified instrument insurance. The unspecified part is important (and I don't think mentioned yet) as it means potentially you could take as much gear as you wanted to gigs and as long as the value of anything pinched is less than £2,000, it'll be covered, whatever it is, even if you take a different bass/amp to every gig. They're also worth it if you're having problems with venues coughing up money. A lot of venues might not care but with the MU you'll get legal advice from people that specialise in that kinda thing. Also free PLI and various other benefits. It's definitely worth it if you (or your band) earn money from your music, it's really not a big cost in the grand scheme of it. deepbass5
I didn't know it was 2k now. Have to say looking at some of these quotes, I'll stick with the union as the combined benefits are better ie the other reasons you mention. Had a radio mic taken last year whilst packing away. Despite being very vigilant. They paid up very fast no problem.
solo4652
I've just costed out PLI insurance for my band: 6-piece band (the premiums depend on the size of the band), £2 Million PLI, band insured (not members, to allow for deps, temporary saxophonists, etc): £122 from JLT: https://www.jltonlin...omCode= £80 from: insurance4perfoming arts: http://www.insurance...mingarts.co.uk/ £150 from Newmoon: http://www.newmooninsurance.com/ £165 from E & L: http://www.eandl.co....pment-insurance Oh - forgot to mention that there are a couple of activities that aren't covered by these PLI policies: Knife throwing Fire eating Edited June 27, 2012 by solo4652
tauzero
Playing a gig for the guitarist's mate's wedding and the venue want £10M PLI. We can get it paid for by the groom but would like to minimise the cost, partly because he'd also contribute to the PAT testing if the insurance wasn't eye-wateringly expensive. I had a look at the above insurers, and they all seem to be £1M, £2M or £5M. Does anyone know any other insurers who might provide £10M insurance for less than £280 (the quote the groom has got)? cloudburst
I originally used Blyth Valley for my Public Liability insurance and also for my Professional Indemnity insurance. Found them to be very friendly and were considerably better priced than the competition at the time (a few years ago). They have since been taken over by Hiscox. I have a feeling the only thing that has changed is the name, but I may be wrong about that. http://www.hiscox.co.uk/business-insurance/public-liability-insurance/ CB
musophilr
PAT certificates are worthless. You can do your own visual inspection. If the meter complains that there is > 0.5 Ohm resistance in the earth lead you press the button that tells it the mains lead is > 2 metres long and it will pass it.
