Jase Posted April 22, 2008 Share Posted April 22, 2008 Yep, ugly, weird colors, odd shapes and massive scale length, don't think I'd enjoy playing one of them, bound to be crap!!!...... ..........Then I met Rob (Shockwave), today actually in Bristol, I was dropping some cabs off for him, so we got the cabs to his flat and Rob invited me in for a quick bit of bass spotting (I was hoping you would mate I was gagging to have a crack at a BC Rich ) and there they were, a little family of BC Rich's. Rob passes one to me, another, another....WHAT? THIS CAN'T BE RIGHT! they're really nice to play, at first I thought he'd chucked a P neck on them , great necks on them all, set up nicely (by Rob) and chunky too, I wanted to play 'em all day actually. My favorite one was the one with gold strings, sorry mate I can't recall the model but that was phwoar! The one you played of mine is a 1984 BC Rich Eagle, but it's the New Jersey Series, not one of the USA models (USA parts constructed in Japan). Unlike Shockwave's Eagle, it's a passive model but with vintage Dimarzio pick ups and a beautiful thru-neck that sounds and plays like a dream! IIRC, Shockwave's Eagle is an early 2000s Custom Shop model I believe and it looks very nice too! It has the full-monty in terms of the active circuitry and it is very, very versatile tonally... I had an original 1978 Eagle that was stolen in 1995 and I'm still gutted by that loss! As has been said by bass ferret, BC Rich do indeed make some very high quality basses. Fell into Lornes hands then fell into mine! I also have an NJ eagle myself, a Nice sensible coloured one. Its only a bolt on, But a very early NJ series. It actually plays probably better then the Custom shop one at the moment(I really need a nice setup and new strings on the custom shop one) Mind you, My first BCR was a NJ Eagle NT. I really didnt like it, the neck just didnt feel nice and had a permanent kink in it. It was a passive twin P like yours. I couldnt stand it but i got it and sold it on for a steal. My friend had a NT Beast guitar he bought through school at the time (escaping VAT it still came to around £350ish), said it's one of the best he's ever played, barring the impracticalities of the body shape, and at the time he was hankering for a fixed bridge. I'll be honest, BC Riches to seem well specced for the cost, those heritage Mockbird basses are £450 for the 4 stringers. Once I'd done a bit of reading I realised there was a whole load of history and quality behind BC Rich, not just the cheap guitars you see dotted around Sound Control. I've got a late NJ Mockingbird which sounds great, but the "100 piece neck" won't straighten so I need to get it looked at when I can afford it. Rad looker though!
