nickcarey
Hi folks, On Pino Palladino's landmark bassline on Paul Young's track Wherever I Lay My Hat does anyone know whether he used Flats on his Musicman or Roundwounds? I think his sound, and of course his playing is so damn good. Cheers Nick

nickcarey
Ta much I'll take a wee listen. The other thing I was wondering about are the types of strings Musicman fit to fretless Stingrays by default.
SJA
pretty sure it was Rotosound swing bass rounds. his stingray's pictured in The Bass Book- it says he's had the fingerboard replaced several times due to wear.

fretless bob
pino definatley uses rotosound rounds on his fretless, he uses the medium swingbass set which are quite a light gauge of 40-60-75-
bass_ferret
Just a guess, but I'd be surprised if they fitted anything other than Ernie Ball strings
+1 - the clue is in Ernie Ball Music Man! Although they might not have been owned by Ernie Ball back then.
Shockwave
Also. Anyone know if percy jones played with flats or rounds on the Brand-X recordings? Cheers
ezbass
I've played that very bass and it was fitted with roundwounds then and I'm pretty sure it was for that recording. Pino also made great use of chorus and octave effects during that period.
acidbass
Slightly OT, but did anyone catch the guy playing it on Sky1's 'Don't Forget The Lyrics' last night? He left out one of the notes about 3 notes into the opening riff, sounded very strange!

Cheers
Rotosound roundwounds- the Superwound "piano string design"set with exposed cores at the bridge. - it's mentioned in the interview in the Bass Heroes book. IIRC he uses DR strings now.
