electric nate Posted June 28, 2011 Share Posted June 28, 2011 Hi, I'm looking to build/buy/acquire a fEARful 15/6 cab, but I can't find any info on anyone making them, owning them or even talking about them in the UK. If you have no idea what I'm on about, the fEARful is basically a bass speaker enclosure blueprint designed by a guy called Greenboy. Lots of info is available here: [url="http://greenboy.us/fEARful/"]http://greenboy.us/fEARful/[/url] Cab builders have to be 'authorized' (not sure what that entails) to build using Greenboy's designs before they're allowed to offer cabs for commercial sale. Not sure whether that covers one-off customer requests or just advertising the fEARful as an available design. I think the initial idea behind the design is that people could build the cabinets as DIY projects, but I'm really not great with carpentry and I lack the tools to cleanly and accurately cut wood, so I was hoping to find someone willing to either supply me with a flatpack of panels or a fully constructed cab. Anyone know any reliable and cheap cab builders around London that might be able to give me a quote for building me a fEARful? 3below Posted June 28, 2011 Share Posted June 28, 2011 (edited) Find a good woodwork shop, ask them to cut the 'cutlist' parts. Get glue, clamps etc and get sticking. If not confident ask woodshop to glue cabinet, chamfer sides etc. Blue Aran - 3015LF, 18 sound 6", T nuts etc. and Tuffcab. Speakerhardware.com for crossover, either loose components (if good with soldering iron) or pre made - easier than sourcing in UK. Paint cab with Tuffcab - I used a sponge pad, looks just like tolex, easy to do. Seal edges of plywood with PVA first, otherwise you get sinkage Get metal grille made, fit all parts, staple polyester wadding inside and way to go. You will be impressed with tone and power handling. make sure you have sufficient Watts available. Total cost £375 to £475 there is a Barefaced Big One on the forum at the moment (or there was yesterday) - might be worth looking at, it is essentially the same thing. You really think it's a do-able project for under £475? I was thinking getting all the parts cut was gonna be pretty expensive, but then i've never really had any experience doing this kinda thing before. Anywhere/anyone you'd recommend for woodworking? The kind of studio-monitor clarity they're known for is what I'm going after. I'm planning to use it with a power amp that can push at least 1200w at 8ohms, and i'm on the lookout for good deals on used QSC RMX series at the moment. I'm kind of awkwardly stuck between amps though, I just sold my old gigging rig, and am now left with an Eden Nemesis 1x12 combo and an Ashdown mag115 deep cab to use as an extension, neither of these are going to fetch much on the used market and aren't well suited to large gigs so I've gotta be careful about how I spend my dough so that i've always got a giggable setup. If it weren't for this I'd snap that barefaced big one up right away, but I figured if I build a fEARful, i can do the cab first, then the electronics and drivers, then the finish whenever my income allows. I'm thinking if I get a power amp first, so I can at least push the ashdown cab hard, and then peice together a fEARful, i should always have something loud enough to be heard, and eventually end up with some awesome depth, clarity and punch. martindupras Posted June 30, 2011 Share Posted June 30, 2011 I am in the process of building a pair of fEARful 12/6 cabs (with tweeters.) What I'm doing for the cabinet is getting the wood precision-cut and delivered to me by Avon plywood (on the excellent recommendation of another UK fEARful user.) It's early days, I've just sent them my cut list today and await the quote for it tomorrow. I'm expecting the wood to come to about £100 for two cabs (I'm guessing it would cost you about £60 for the wood for a 15/6). The construction is very straightforward and doesn't need specialised tools (you just need a healthy supply of clamps.) On that basis, I would think that if you know someone handy they wight be able to put it together for you or that any cabinet maker could make you one. However the one I saw pictures of was being used purely with a sub. I'd be I treated in using as a standalone tweeter/mid range box, with a certain compact cab........ martindupras Posted June 30, 2011 Share Posted June 30, 2011 From what I understand from the fEARful forum, the "headcase" is just a way to separate the 15/16 into a sub and a midrange-and-highs boxes. The rationale, I believe, is just to enable some more modularity to the fEARful family. As far as I know, very few people have built the headcase. This is just my opinion here, but I think the headcase only makes sense if you already have a 12sub or 15sub. Let's say you have a 12/6 and a 15sub already, then the headcase allows you to use it with the 15sub, or the 12/6 and the 15sub together. Also you have to keep in mind that you still need half of the crossover for the headcase (unlike a bright box, which only needs a high-pass filter.) - martin Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
jimrs2k Posted July 1, 2011 Share Posted July 1, 2011 Hi.i built my 15/6/1 six months ago, and to be honest its the best cab I've heard in nearly 30 years . I used 12mm poplar ply from Avon plywoods and blue arran for the speakers etc., crossover parts were direct from erse in the US , no customs to pay. Once i had all the Parts built the cab on sat,painted on Sunday and running on Tuesday. I paired it with a genz benz shuttle9.2 and im very happy. Be warned these cabs are very accurate and will make you work on your playing, and very very loud!! and only weighed 42lbs. Building a 12/12/6/1 for s metal head soon. Lots of people have made theirs look different. Is anyone familiar with the designs any the wiser for any more options than have been given above? Also, is there any scope for using a different sub? I'm painfully having to sell my NV215 soon and would like a replacement that has a similar vibe, however the NV115s or any other setup with a mid driver & no tweeter seem rare af. And yes i still use to this day ,about six years ago i also buit a separate 15 sub to pair with it for when a little more is required and apart from outdoor gigs its just not needed.
