Definition of a proper Jazz bass??????

Well since it is trademarked the term Jazz Bass would be whatever Fender decides at the moment. From a legal point of view.

Outside of that I think the question is flawed as it tries to polarize a complex issue into a binary answer. I look at it as there are only Fender Jazz Basses, all others are Jazz style to some extent. Very Jazz like, a bit Jazz like and so forth.

What do you do with modded Fenders? If you swap a P pickup in the neck position does a Fender Jazz stop being a Jazz? Many of the definitions so far would have real Fender Jazzes not be Jazz Basses

Then we have companies like Tokai who made unauthorized copies of Jazzes and then later made a deal with Fender to transform them into real ones. Do the old fakes become real once the deal is signed?

No real answer is possible. That's how I see it

I used a jazz body because of it's ergonomics. It's not even a J width neck.

IMHO..

jazz shape, JJ pickups, Jazz neck, ..preamp depending on the enterpretation of the tone of a jazz... its got to stay real IMHO

Oh - OUt7shined... you shouldn't use speaker spikes on a wooden floor. It actually increases the acoustic couplling rather than lowers it which is the aim of spikes on other surfaces.

That makes sense but it's actually a tough laminate flooring and the spikes don't penetrate it. I whip them off and see if there's any difference though. Cheers.

I've a mate who has endless PhD in acoustics and sound. I'm always getting told off for stupid things.. but also get a proper scientific opinion on snake oil too!

My bass has 4 strings, JJ pickups with 2 vols pots and one tone, 20 frets, Jazz-dimension neck and it is passive. I'd never call it a jazz bass, though, because it isn't jazz shaped. I might say it was [b]like[/b] a jazz bass, if asked to describe its feel and tone (and I used to own a Fender Jazz, so I have some point of comparison).

I did say it doesn't always make sense! For me there definitely isn't a specific definition for what I'd call a Jazz Bass. Although I've realised the title actually says "proper" Jazz Bass, in which case it either has to be a Fender or a good copy, passive, two single coil "Jazz" pickups, proper jazz neck, and pickguard etc.

Is this a Jazz? The (Green!?) transfer came off ebay so it must be genuine!
It has no untouched parts left,Even the neck has been sanded down on the edges to take the sharp fret edges off and the body has been drilled to make room for the jack socket but I would defo still call it a Jazz?

Yep- A JAZZ to me means the OFF-SET body shape & 2 single coils. that's it. Don't matter if it's got a 2/3 band pre/piezo's etc... the OFF SET body is the main thing & Pref. 2 single coil pups
