The guitar player in my band owns his own recording/rehearsal studio. Today i found this gathering dust in a corner. Apparently it's broke. Needs new valves. I don't know loads about amps, anyone know much about it. Is it any good, worth much etc. It's an Ampeg V4BH. Here are some sh*tty pics! Right, just ordered one off Thomann. I blame you Discreet. I was first made aware of them by a comment of yours in a thread a couple of months ago. Then this thread. When my wife asks "why the kids are starving?", i'm gonna say "ask that bloody Discreet!"
Soundclips aren't that great for making amp choices imo. You really have to be in the room with one, though I do understand that's not always possible. Ask Thunderbird, I think he's had one for the longest time. I'd make a clip, but I don't have a BVT currently. Though I may get another just for the hell of it.

With the gain right up there is not a huge amount of growl but I like my sound clean anyway. The EQ is nice and gets you a variety of sounds so at such a cheap price I am happy.
Thanks for the advice. I like a lot of growl and a lot of gain, but no distortion, so may stay away. Or put my Zoom B1ut, or whatever it's called (impulse buy on here, that i don't really use anymore) and see what i can do with it.

I'm umming and ahhing about getting one. I want another amp as backup and maybe even to use as not as a backup. It's between this and that bugera bvp5500 but don't know much about either. can't find decent soundclips.

Me neither!
That's the secret of good playing though. Knowing/hearing/understanding what will be masked and what won't. He's probably playing them 'live' with the rest of the band in the studio. Then dropping in to correct any mistakes later. At least that's the way we use to record in the 80s. It was all on 8 track DAT in those days. So for 24 tracks you had 3 machines sync'ed together.
I'd say that's the secret of good production and mixing. The secret of good playing is to play good, then you don't need things to be masked. I fully understand the playing with a band and getting a good overall feel and a few things will be pushed and pulled, but that was just sloppy. Check this, here's JPJ. It's with the band there is the odd push/pull but not sloppy. Good playing! http://youtu.be/3ANwQW8aspI
The trouble with hearing the bass in isolation is that it can sometimes (not always) shatter the illusion. The bigger picture of hearing everything together is where the magic is, so if I hear an isolated bass track, 9 times out of 10 I am disappointed. What I am hearing are notes that are before, on or behind the beat but with no beat to give it any context/foundation. That sounds sloppy sometimes because it is on its own. I grew up listening to Iron maiden and Live after Death was the reason i picked up the bass. I must have watched the video once a day for months on end. Genghis Khan is one that I have always struggled with, Caught Somewhere in Time and The Evil That Men Do are real tests of endurance too.
I understand all that, but in this case it's nearly all the time. The band would have to be all the place for it to be in context. It's just sloppy.

Who's Paul Turner? -
There are a few isolated bass tracks on YouTube. If you listen, you will here how sloppy he is! Poor. If they are him? Which I think they are! http://youtu.be/23YO8ijT4Ao http://youtu.be/qSYuse9o8KI

Hell's teeth! To think I've spent the last couple of years trying to work on not staring intently at my left hand the whole time I'm playing (and its worked, I now only stare at it about 90% of the time), they're playing other people's instruments as well! I can't even look at the time while walking without stopping, so after watching that I'm feeling a tad stoopid. Bloody brilliant vid!!!
Right if that's excellent (which I'm not disputing) why is this classed as cheese and not excellent! (playing each others instruments oo-er) http://youtu.be/j_7iRZzlSzI -

Ya joking!.....well i never! i was wondering how they made that cello sound like a double bass near the end, and how i could hear that shaker despite no mics!
Someone once said to me that they hadn't really noticed my playing until I stopped for a bar or two, and then the arse fell out of the whole tune. I couldn't have asked for more, really.
So you were happy that the arse fell out of the whole tune? And it only took two bars of non playing to do that, for my band i would have been gutted!
