So neck arrived today, lovely harley benton number and I almost feel bad messing with it.
But let the homebrew relic commence! 😁

Hopefully it will be completely unavailable to the hoi polloi like me....
No need to worry, Yamaha like to create custom basses for artists to keep them on the roster and stop them going elsewhere, but will never make them avaiable as production models.

In case you're not aware, G&L place their MFD split pickups slightly closer to the bridge than is the standard P spot, ⅜" / 9½mm iirc
Interesting, so if I went down this route it wouldn't quite sound like the SB-2. I'm a huge fan of G&L and I like the passive on steroids idea so might go with it anyway. Thanks for the info though!

Whilst waiting on parts to arrive I've been thinking more about pickups (can you tell I'm on annual leave 🤔😅)
Think I've narrowed it down to either Dimarzio or picking up a G&l MFD. Very different tonally but think I would be happy with either, I guess the Dimarzio is a bit more traditional sounding with the G&L being very modern and less P bass

Decided to drop G&L an email and got a response in under an hour!
Turns out you can place parts orders through any G&L dealer. Off to Guitar Guitar I go!

Just wondering if there is anyone in the UK who has stock/could order MFD pickups?
I could buy it directly from G&L but shopping is basically the cost of the pickup. Would love to put one in my P bass project.

So a bit of progress today.
Stuck up a wanted ad looking for parts and think I've for an aged looking bridge on the way courtesy of @Rumple and have just organised getting that HB neck from @hooky_lowdown
Going to get some sandpaper and strip back the arm rest section a bit more across the next few days.
After hardware it's next onto pickup choice, not sure which direction I want to go. Cheap and classic Tonerider or maybe something a bit more modern sounding like Aguilar? Have to listen to some samples and see what appeals

Not specifically BB related, but where do you look for these rare and wonderful basses?
I find eBay and gumtree to not be particularly fruitful most of the time....

What width is the heel on this?

Get one of those "dual rail humbuckers in Strat casing", these just drop in without any modifications.
That's what's in it just now but not a huge fan of the tone I'm getting. Would prefer something a bit more traditional.

Would a jazz pickup not fit there with a lot less work?
Very probably, but I think it would look odd, and not sure I like the idea of a jazz neck sound without a bridge pickup to balance it out?

Absolutely love that, I've got a white version but that's a great colour.
Won't be here long...

Long time since I posted but has anyone ever tuned a short scale bass to D / drop C?
Would the short scale not be suitable for lower tunings?
Would probably need to use the lower 4 strings of a short scale 5 strings set. Or contact Newtone and they would be able to wind you a custom set.

Looking to upgrade the pickup and preamp in my MTD Kingston, but it seems to be an odd size - 50mmx105mm
Anyone know of any off the shelf pickups that would fit. Would like to pair it with a Spector Tonepump if that helps.
Thanks!

yeah they’re borderline the same - much like car manufacturers, they did a mid lifecycle repackage.
With cars, it’s usually a grille and headlight shape change.
On These - they put different pickups in and did some colour changes.
but necks and bodies…same.
Ta Andy, any massive tonal differences between the pickups? Both seem a great deal for the quality of basses.

So there are two VERY nice BBs for sale currently, and I was all for the BBG4, but then I saw the Crimson BBN ii.
Anyone able to do a quick list of the differences between these? Are the neck profiles the same etc.

Does it have an octaver built in?
I appreciate the quality and craftmanship of this but not sure the who octave up thing would be that useful for me. Still look like great fun though!
