1. The Tung basses always looked nice but with so few made, finding one would be a real challenge!
2.
I like their Jeff Berlin signature model too - another one that if they'd made it in a 5 I would have bought.
The Palaedium? Fantastic bass. I'd buy one if I saw one going. The B Quad was an amazing bass too. Lets see those rare Peaveys!
3. I do love those Dolphins. I have always thought, after the Thumb, they are the most 'Warwick' sounding of all Warwick basses, if that makes sense!
4. Does anyone remember Kevin Cook? I ask, because I think he was actually a member of this forum (as well as MXtabs/Musicianchat and Talkbass). Anyway, he started off playing a Yamaha TRB and went onto getting a custom Warwick Vampyre - he was a massive Seth Horan fan at the time and ended up getting into that sort of solo bass singer/songwriter thing himself and ended up playing some pretty cool sounding stuff and having a few good tunes. Before that, I think he was in some sort of middle of the road indie band that were actually getting on quite well with festival appearances etc etc. Last I heard before I was ejected from Talkbass was that he might even have supported Seth Horan at a gig, and having not heard from him in years, I forgot about him. Has anyone heard from him? I looked on youtube but couldn't find any of his stuff. Just on a nostalgia trip here.
5. I'm quite happy to play with just a digital preamp and onstage monitoring. I'm quite happy even just playing with headphones on, if the in-ear mix is of sufficient quality.
6. That doesn't mean she doesn't look like a 13 year old...
7.
Oh man - it does it for me! CB
Looks like a 13 year old... You find this attractive?
8. The sublime Allan Holdsworth... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOPXPlWdbqg
9.
I dunno why Anal **** is a dumb name. For what the band's stated aims were- insulting people and pissing people off- it was pretty much perfect.
They also had some pretty humorous song titles too.
10.
Aaaaaaargh. Not what I wanted to hear. Yet exactly what I wanted to hear. Chequebook well and truly OUT. Hit me with your Wals any prospective ex-Wal-owners. CB
I think there may have been some irony in that post, especially given the recent discussion on the Wal sound. It certainly doesn't sound much like a Wal to me, but it does sound like a $$ with some compression to smooth out the playing. Big humbucker sound, some bite but no sharp treble frequencies.
11. Both videos are crap.
12. It largely depends on where the bridge sits on your body, compared to the same measurement on your current bass. If the bridge on the Peavey sits far out across your body, like a jazz bass, you'll probably not have much of a stretch to reach first position. If it sits across the centre of your body, you might think the neck feel really long. Similarly, if your bass now has skinny strings and you move over to a 35" scale bass with thicker strings you might notice the change in tension. But it's not really a big deal, so don't let it put you off.
13.
I have this version on my iPod, you can hear the rest of the track in the spill from the vocal take headphones.
Do you suppose it's the vocal headphones where that comes from? I had noticed it on a few part of the track if you listen to it with the volume turned right up, mainly the distant sound of the guitar coming through; it has that really sparkly sound that cuts through.
14. What a load of rubbish.
15.
They were EMG's budget range. The only bass I've had them in was a Hohner Jack, which sounded okay.
Same here. I have heard some people say that they are exactly the same as EMG's more expensive pickups, just in a different casing. I doubt that very much. But they weren't as dire as some people make out.
16. We need to see some pictures of this bass!
17.
What is it about the necks? (Wal virgin here)
A lot of them have quite a pronounced 'V' profile, a lot of people don't like it. It's unlike anything else I'd played but I don't mind it, though the necks aren't the best necks in the world. I can live with that though, and still enjoy the bass. I expect with the super expensive custom Wals being made at the moment, you could have youe pick of neck shape.
18. This was a track from the Japanese special edition of Graceland. It is marvellous. The alternate version of Homeless is fantastic too.
19. I wouldn't just recommend any Stanley Clarke album - you might end up with a Clarke/Duke project record by mistake! And they're bloody crap!
20. This tune sounds really dated now (and it is!), but there is no denying that the main guitar theme is genius. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLroVhaSCWo
21.
One to avoid Mick Karn - Titles. (Loved Mick with Japan, but this IMHO is total crap)
It's very different, but there are a lot of great songs on it, and some great bass parts too. It shows that Karn was a talented musician and writer, rather than just being an interesting bassist in a fairly naff pop band.
22. For a Newcastle band, they never seem to play live in Newcastle that often!
23. Could you link us to the comparison? As I love the sound of Kubicki basses and Yamaha TRB's and I'd love to hear the recording.
24. Endless Nameless is undoubtedly one of the best rock records ever made, what a masterpiece.
25. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVqyJrMmQQY Been listening to this and learning the bass part over again, having forgotten most of it in the intervening six or seven years!
