1.
Jeff Berlin has contacted me about coming on to the boards here for a moderated chat, like he has done over on Talkbass. Would people be interested in this? Pete
I'm sure such an opportunity would be greatly welcomed. The Talkbass chats were fantastic, I'm a huge fan of Jeff's music so just getting to say hi was awesome!
 2.
i guess i found another really bright bass: kubicki x-factor too bad those are so rare...
My Kubicki had a really bright sound, great for the Stuart Hamm stuff I was into at the time! However, my Status Stealth bass was much brighter that the Kubicki! The Kubicki was abit "thinner" sounding, but in an awesome way.
 3. I only had my CVJ for a week or two before I sold it on, but I found it to be a good bass, and perfectly useable. I thought it was miles better than my VMJ fretless, which was also pretty decent!
 4. I remember on Talkbass, the club thing got a bit excessive, up to the point where the joke "Club for people who hate clubs" threads were getting panned as "old hat". However, I was in the Spector club on Talkbass! Its been a while since I had a Spector though, but I still think about that bass. It was very, very good.
 5. It's a shame, but I've always found Marcus a bit "middle of the road". Always making the same stuff, with the same sound...and I don't really rate his slap playing. I know a lot of people think he is the "be all and end all" of slap, but I'd rather listen to Mark King, Jonas Hellborg, Stuart Hamm etc etc... That said, I always thought Marcus' greatest talent was his fretless playing, which he doesn't do enough of!
 6. I'm sorry to say, but that looks hideous. It just looks like a very badly abused Thumb that should sadly be skipped. You've been taken for a ride by the seller, which is also unfortunate. Personally, being a Thumb owner and addict myself, I'd just send it back and save up for a better one...
 7.
I wanted a clip of him playing (im sure the one i heard wasnt live) the whole thing, the videos here (such as the first one) are only small bits of it. Thanks though
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Radio-Free-Albemut...1383&sr=1-3 There you go!
 8.
when I went on the local NHS surviving RA course one of the things they said was "diet makes no difference". I tend to differ with that slightly from the foregoing tale, and the fact that I know that orange juice plays havoc with my joints.
I would have to agree with this point. I am lucky not to have suffered any joint problems myself, but last year my dad was suffering with gout. His foot was bad and he couldn't run or cycle. Eating certain things made it much worse too, especially anything with a lot of citric acid in it!
 9.
I'm sure he is a good player, but talent is subjective at best. One man's meat is another man's gravy as they say
I could not agree more!
 10.
Uh oh. I hope you're wearing your flameproof underpants.
I don't think they'll be necessary! I've not seen half the fanboy-ism for Les now that there was 10 or even 5 years ago! He is a talented bassist and very creative aswell, but the Casiopea players are fusion heavyweights, a field I just don't think Les has the talent to play in!
 11.
Hasn't Les Claypool been doing stuff like this since forever?
With half the talent, yes! This guy is a great player. I like the video on youtube where he shows you some of his bass collection. I'm sure it includes Warwick, Kubicki, Spector etc etc...very good taste!
 12. Just hang on there mate.... Out of 8 years buying basses, 70% of mine have been bought online, usually having never played one before! And the ones I've bought online have been the ones I've spent longest with! That said, I did buy a Spector Rebop DLX Zebrano at Sound Control in Preston. Anyway, where I was going was - you've found something decent, hang onto it! If you sold it because one thing didn't quite click, then what are the chances the next bass you look at will be perfect? If anything, I wish I had still had my Spector, it was mint. Its like when you buy a car. The first day you drive when you own it, you'll be cursing the clutch, the electrics, the light controls, the seat position, because in spite of all the things you love about it, there are certain aspects that feel alien. However, drive it for two weeks and it'll make your old motor feel like a stranger! You'll settle into the bass in a few days. There is no neck that is unplayable, which is why I find it strange when people are so anal about a bass, contemplating giving it up based on the fraction of a centimetre in a width here or there. Many times I've got a new bass and it's felt a bit odd and I've been disheartened, but give it a few days and you'll soon be in love.
 13. I have to say, I recently had a seriously good buying experience at Guitar Guitar in Newcastle. Before I had even walked into the shop, I said to my brother "If we find something cool in here, we'll just buy it on a whim". Upon entering, I spotted a Fender Malmsteen strat in one of the private rooms. When my brother asked to play it, he wasn't treat with any disdain or cheek, despite being a lad in his early 20's wearing sports clothing. Similarly, I had turned up in my trackies with my fell running shoes on! The sales assistant had no issues with us trying the guitar, he asked my brother what kind of amp he used at home and set and amp up for him. He even spent 5 minutes explaining the amp so my brother would be able to get the best out of it! After he'd tried to guitar, we said we'd go and think about buying it over lunch. There was no snootiness or anything, and my brother did go back the next day to buy the guitar. I was really pleased, I felt like as customers we'd been looked after. We'd been given the guitar, a great amp and a private room to play in, where you can turn the amp up to a nice level. Really great stuff, and I'll certainly be shopping there again I think!
 14. They just look a bit bland, a bit clubby and sadly, a bit cheap...which is odd considering the price of some of them! Much like the Washburn Status basses, I am not the biggest fan of the brand dilution thing...although the Cort Elrick basses were cool!
 15.
They look very good quality and very varying in design. Not sure on the headstock shape, though. The traditional Overwater style would have been nicer. The pricing will be the clincher...
Some of them look ok and some look a bit cheap. They're certainly not as nice looking as I had hoped they would be! They may well sound great.
 16. Given the state of the off topic though, it wouldn't be surprising if it was deleted, and rightly so. The forum there really has turned into a bit of a toilet. Every other thread is "I take drugs/I hate the police/I'm bitter about..."..."/. The good stuff is severely lacking in there at the moment unfortunately.
 17. Having got into the whole fretless Musicman thing myself, I can honestly say that its now my favourite configuration for a fretless bass!
 18. Everything Jonas Hellborg plays on just had the most incredible bass tone. This is a prime example of his tone these days, although I have to say I preferred it when he was playing Status Graphite basses...shame about Mattias Eklund murdering Shawn Lane's guitar part though... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf9hAL4b3e4
 19.
The Americans used to call it 'thumpin'
I have a copy of Jonas Hellborg's "Thumb Bassics" book from the 1980's. In there he refers to it as the "Thumb style", and the word "slap" isn't mentioned once!
 20.
He didn't play on St Anger.
I know, hence me saying "although the lines on the album are amazingly played too". Albeit it by Bob Rock and James. On a Spector owned by the bassist from Loverboy, no less!
 21. That Overwater is beautiful, I'd snatch your hand off for it if I had the cash! Proper stunner!
 22.
Wasn't he playing he playing Alembics at the time
IIRC, he was playing Jaydee and Pangborn basses then, he hadn't quite seen the light of Alembic and Status!
 23. 80's shred solos rock. The death of the 80's was the death of mainstream rock music that rocked, and bands that sucked took over wholesale! Furthermore, Mark King is the boy. Some of the best slap tones ever, he played the 70's crowd under the table with ease all the while writing better songs!
