1. i being very nit picky here but i think you could emphasise the chord change in the verse more. It sounded like a C(sharp)m7b5? I think you were playing the G but it could have done with ringing out IMO. Also i would have played a little lead up to it just to give it more oomph (words have lost me today). And also a little lick back to the E. Finally get your vocalist on some shakers! haha
2. i don't see your point silddx. I find both to be musical
3. have to agree with this. Especially as i just know the prices are going to increase by the time i can afford one. (maybe 10-20 years)
4.
You can create a nice simple groove with your Root, 3rd, 5th & octave. With these 3 notes your able to transfer it to all the chords in the piece if needs be.
a personal favourite is using the b7 on chords with a b7. If you've got your intervals down, then chromatic notes into and between chord tones is generally leads to the more interesting lines
5. i really like jim deacon basses. Usually £150 new
6. if you study the jamerson book back to front you shouldn't have any problems with many chord charts. Analyse the chord progressions of the motown songs, then find your favourite licks and apply them to other songs. You will find most of jamersons lines are chord tones and chromatic approaches. This isn't something you will be able to get together in a week, the art of improvisation takes awareness and understanding. Also when being handed a chord chart make sure you find out what the groove is. The style is usually written just above the first bar.
7. as you can see from the picture without the scratch plate, the hole above the bridge pickup is where the musician pickup would have filled it in. Its a shame as it is a wonderful example of a MM that without the mod would have been worth around £900. (estimation judged on what similar aged MM have recently gone for. As for value now, i guess you could say £900 minus whatever it costs for someone to restore it Edit: just noticed as well the mutes are missing too
8.
I like to think I know my way around a bass but if I, or you, started smacking muted strings people would think its sh*t and that I'm crazy.
so now you think mark king, marcus miller, flea and larry graham are sh*t too
9. the fact that his video has made it into a thread just because of the last sections shows how important the slap thing is for his publicity, gets people talking
10. having seen the second video, its clearly being used as a way of adding direction to the song. He's building tension by adding new layers and textures to the song before dropping back into the melody. Its a clever way of doing so with just a bass guitar imo and i think it suits the context great. Otherwise the song would be incredibly boring after 30 seconds
11. people clap for things they cant do. Like when people put sticks of fire down there mouth (or anything on Britains got talent). Most of its no impressive and completely useless. However, most people clap to appreciate the fact they cant do it and it would have taking the performer x amount of time to build the skills to do it
12. guitar guitar is walking distance if you like walking a distance :-p. Not a fan of fair deal, they only really stock the cheaper bass gear and everyone in there has long hair. PMT is great though, i've had lots of great experiences in there even when i was in my teens.
13. when i was 15 i was being taught by a player called nathan rainer. One lesson he tried to teach me intervals. I had no interest and forgot it the second i was out the room. Fast Forward 3 years and first lesson in ACM, intervals........ sh*t. It took me 2 months just to get my head around the most basic of music theory and chord substitutions. If i had that together before i went in i have no doubt i would be much better now and probably doing bigger gigs instead of practising. Not so much a missed opportunity in terms of gigs but a good lesson for anyone thinking of studying music
14. im loving the flame maple fingerboard on the precision
15. just got back from london...... eurghhhhhhhhhhhhh
16. it needs to still have resemblance to the song! i would want to solo on the pre chorus horn section just by playing around the melody. However, for idea's on cool bass parts for superstition this take was pretty good from what i remember. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ul7X5js1vE
17. clever use of articulation
18. should be similar to this then....
19.
I don't make a fortune but then I couldn't give a sh*t what car I drive, I meet and have met some fantastically interesting people... It's there if you want it... EDIT.. seriously mods... s_wan_ky gets asterisked?
Dont think you cant get a nice car though. I met a session trumpet player who had his brand new 5 series BMW broken into at a gig in london. It's down to the priorities that you decide to spend money on, as with any other earner in any other industry. I think now the only reason this thread is carrying on is because people want it to for their own boredom and lack of things to complain about. write to the BBC complaining about the cold or whatever you boring bastards do but stop ruining basschat with your wrong opinions and negativity.
20. to the op. A good idea may be to PM Jakesbass. He's a fantastic guy and is a professional working musician. i'm sure he will offer you plenty of things to think about and it will be far more useful than reading through this any longer.
21.
I could be snide and make a comment about how your illiterate posts give me some idea of why you're working as a string plucker
You're right. I'm studying music. I've chosen to not promote myself and audition for gigs as i really want to get my chops together before im (hopefully) out gigging most days of the week. Im only just 21 and my student loan keeps me alive while i practice. I thought after just completing my exams i would have a quick look on basschat and you've ruined my nights practice of transcribing and latin grooves
22. as an example of music courses working. Tom Kent, who is a basschat member, finished ACM 4 months ago and he seems very busy with all the work hes got as a musician
23.
Bitter? No, A realist, surely. I studied at uni for a year and left when I got a job with a 35 year contract. I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade or make their dreams sound silly but the real world is a tough, unforgiving place and the competition is more numerous and better qualified than ever. You owe it to yourself to give yourself the best chance.
so your not a professional bass player then... think that pretty much sums up how relevant your posts are
24. chris 2112 i would love to know your background. You sound like a bitter old git in these posts
25. and in terms of the music industry. its all word of mouth!
