Has your bass playing ever gotten you...
Mrbigstuff replied to teen t-shirt's topic in General Discussion
no thank god, playing bass is one of the times i can get away from my girlfreind which means lots of practice -
Hi, im desperate to learn double bass as i love the sound and idea of playing one. However, im yet to buy one as at the minute their too expensive and iv always been fearful of playing one for the first time in a shop. Is there anyone on here near Guildford or central london that teaches begginner students? cheers, ollie

cheers guys, the music union one does work without being a member and seems the best but iv got much roaming to do i think

Does anyone know of any free websites where covers and function bands would advertise for bass players?
I don't know about that - I work very hard indeed to make sure I'm always utterly uncool
By rules i learnt from the simpsons saying that makes you cool, im sorry OutToPlayJazz you cannot win

I really liked it, standard pop song which feels very relaxing and natural on the ear. I think this fits in with modern times more than their old 90's and naughties stuff. Only thing is with crap like "GayLS" in the charts how can any decent band fit in anymore. Still i liked it and im sure the new album will have lots of different styles to suit everyone. It was interesting that at Hard rock calling 60% of the set was old 90's songs, maybe a sign.
There's a dearth of decent music shops in Brum now, Sound Control/Reverb............ won't go anywhere but PMT now, personally, as they've always given me sterling service.
Theres guitarguitar now in birmingham and PMT have fantastic customer service just a tad expensive for me

Its a good point about trying them out first, do you know of any good string shops that stock cheaper DB's? in England
-
Iv decided its time to start learning the double bass so for that i feel i need one. And iv been looking around and iv found i can get something like a second hand stentor or zeller DB for around £400-500. Or i can save up a bit and get a slightly older German DB for between £1000-1200. Is it really going to benefit me as a begginner to go for the German ones? Also are there any cheep DB's i should avoid? Cheers, Ollie

With my bands in the past weve done synchronised busted jumps... try to get the band involevd and tell them if bassists are doing it its definately cool and not just showing off
They're all joining up to take advantage of the amazing deals in the For Sale threads I reckon
Actually true plus u guys are very cool

Back to the title of shortage of bass players. I had never been around more than 2 until i came to ACM and we were all finding it a bit strange to be in a room of 12 or so bassists, compared to the stupid amount of bad guitarists that there are. Maybe more serious musicians do head towards bass and drums
That vid is great! Is that a modulus?
I thought status at first but it looks more like someone just had a custom bass made and put an unbranded neck on it

A sorta bass autobiography if you will - Part 1
Mrbigstuff replied to absolutpepper's topic in General Discussion
Thanks, my plan is...if people like it...to do a post every month or so and chronologically focus on each bass i've owned (although some might be very short stories! )
Why not focus on everything? auditions, learning, teachers, inspirations... Although gear is my favourite thing and i love how every bass will have a storey I dont mean to be disrispectful to anyone but if any of the "older guys" wrote blogs on basschat i definately would be reading. 1960's p basses and all that -
I was really pleasently suprised by this bass. I didnt think the neck was too thin and the build quality seemed a good standard. Also the sound was fantastic for the money. I managed to get a fantastic jazz sound all across the neck which isnt achievable with many high end basses, i liked it much better than the american deluxe i used to own. But........ I too am thinking about a custom classic shuker jazz bass. Dont know why but the reviews give me GAS

This doesnt look like a graphite to me, iv seen these sort of status basses go on ebay for between £100 and £300

This should have a new section really. I would love to hear about other bassists begginings and how things developed.... Good idea -
6ths n 7ths all the way for that one. Its often nice to go alternate the 6th, 7th and 5th.... typical guitar thing in blues

A design REDDI. All valve and very highly rated
Does this mean LHs are the bargain of the century? Or do they only sound like that when Nate plays through 'em?
They are the bargains on the century! Because their chinese made im guessing. But yh awsum amps i just wish they did a 250 watt one because 500 is melting me room when i practice.
Although last night he was using a Bossa and not an Aleva Coppola, which he seems to do quite alot.
yhp its the bossa, havnt seen the alleva in ages which is a shame because its gorgeous! Anyone enjoy Muse at Glastonbury?
Mrbigstuff replied to TomNicoBassman's topic in General Discussion
Its interesting to read everyones opinions as always. So heres mine... 1) I saw stevie wonder on saturday and the sound was amazing compared to what was shown at glastonbury on sunday. And im positive that it sounded crap just because of bbc's coverage, you dont get half the frequencies and clarity as you do in person. The difference is amazing and you would think in a modern day bbc would do better. 2) Swapping basses for different songs. Why? you get basses with a million knobs these days and its pretty much so you dont need to swap. For rock songs its all the same anyway, fender jazz, p bass or stingray style thing and its perfect. I did a few sets last week and just used my stingray the whole way through just giving it slight adjustment when needed. And isnt Muse mostly fuzz based anyway? a nice passive bass and your sorted! Just showboating his money me thinks (N)
