    Jazz

here is a rare one, its like a big yummy lollypop, gorgeous enough to lick, though looking a bit battered now active electrics with warwick thumb bass gold active mec pickups, controls are....vol, pan, B&T stack, sound is crispy and bright very similar to marcus's sound, not very tight at the bottom though so for bottom end punch i use the G&L which just kills it, but for the slappy stuff, in a mix it can cut heads off, super thin frets, nice orig offset body, 62 jazz neck with very thin nut end, of all the jazz basses i have and have had this is by far the best neck, super low action, 100, 80, 60,40 nickles, fotoflame hamburgler is present, and it plays as good as it looks. though its going to have a new body soon.
  5. Jean thank you so much for going to the trouble of giving me all that knowledge, so much useful info cheers. i have seen rottenstone on ebay to seal it and pumice powder will plaster do the same job ? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/bolpol-Pumice-Powder-FFF-SUPER-FINE-high-grade-for-french-polishing-500g/142055147965?hash=item21132589bd:g:GqoAAOxyMZVTkEm3
  6. Hello Ped, i wish the body would end up that light, but no its going to go that orangy mahog color, more like this https://www.talkbass.com/threads/g-l-mahogany-l-2000-series-e-what-would-you-do.680800/ so going to have a go at french polishing it, we will see. yea i am keeping that black finish, i have seen crackle finish in a can so might touch up the bridge and plates, just looking for some led paint for the control and pickup holes for screening, same as my wal. ebay seems to be the place, just hate the look of that copper paper for screening it looks so untidy, In the soul band im in i normally use a red 2000-E have done since i retired my wal for prob the last 15 years, but i have not changed the strings on it for years wanting to keep the sound dead a thuddy, but last night i had a band practice in the 80s show band i am also in, so wanting something more bright i took the black 81 2000-E with slot pole pieces on it just cus i have not used it in a while, im very reluctant to use that one as its like new, anyway... took it out and OMG, i forgot how good that thing is, SO MUCH POWER and Honk, its got newish strings on and i reckon i could cut heads off with it, :-) so .....All in all i cant wait to get this one finished as im going to use it for a while in the 80s show band, and i wont be too bothered about getting it scratched like the other one, really looking fwd to it, i will keep this post updated as i go, thanks for the nice comments.
  7. Thanks all i have passed on your details, i think they are sorted for now. if any change i will update this. Thanks
  8. Thought i would have a go at rebuilding this Very Rare Beast. the one on the right. Its an jan 82, Hog body G&L L2000-E i got this off a close friend with one pickup coil knackered and the Black paint crazed all over and falling off. So thought sod it lets attack it, first off the pickup these are available from the G&L site at about $100. each you can get these in black or white. https://g-l-online-store.myshopify.com/collections/pickups/products/mfd-4-string-bass-pickup Lucky i had a spare one so i just split the coil and replaced, word of warning here, the early coils were dark ceramic coated and dont bulge out at the sides ( belly out) like the new ones do and will just pop out with out too much fuss, the new ones do bulge a bit with a lighter coil on them, these are abit more tricky to get out as the sides in the centre do come in contact with a divider which is part of the cover and is lightly glued in, if you pull the coil pack out you will tare the coils and split them which i did to one, lucky i was able to unwind a few of the coils to fine the end again and resolder it, some good advice if doing this is to tape the coils up before you put them back in. once in all was running fine with all switches doing their job. The body, the best way to get the paint off is a heat gun, paint stripper will make a horrid mess and the color will go into the wood making sanding the patches out a real ball ache. the heat gun took me about 45 mins to get it all off, it does not have to be that hot so if you see the paint bubbling then thats way too hot, just use a 1.5 in scraper, and the paing will just peel off right down to the wood, ok here is my other word of warning if you do this and have a hog body, DO NOT scrape up along with the grain going from bridge to neck this will lift the small end grains and leave you with loads of little welts in the wood, as can be seen in the pic, again a sanding nightmare, go across the grain this i found was far better with no lifting of the wood at all. Once all off there was a sort of red patina to the wood may have been a sort of chem sealer, this did not take much sanding to get off. so thats where i am up to. i am just looking on youtube how to french polish the body i dont want it too dark and want to keep it as light as i can rather than have that orangy mahogany colour, so any advice here would be great any one ? here is what i have been looking at to do the job...

  11. i have a load of fave female singers, but one for me which just exudes pure talent is liane Carroll and all that while playing stunning piano with such feeling and emotion, both just flow out of her and to top it all her husband Roger Carey on bass who has the ability to make most bass players just want to pack in, in one word i would say "beautiful" playing. take time to check him and Liane out, and If you get the chance catch her live throughout the uk then go... its an experience https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WbOQcSokAY http://thestinger.org.uk/article/57c5ccacedb1e2294d6cf69d
  12. Loads of top end bands already mentioned, funk and if you want to broaden it out to modern "Fonk" then its such a broad genre it just depends where you want to go, Nils landgren already listed i have everything he has recorded but check out his later bass player magnum coltrain price's stuff as well, here he is explaining the difference between funk and fonk, depends where you want to go, ...let me explain that, ...once you have exhausted all the main old funk bands you will find you ear and taste will channel you one way or the other, for example i now find when im writing for my funk band im putting in more Latin funk, this is finding its way in via fantastic bands i really like, like New cool collective, but you can now stick funk with anything, rock funk, smooth funk, funky grooves, rap funk, funk jazz, old school funk, funkysoul, is disco funky ? yea , all practically built on funk, the list is endless.. there are some great bass players on here all helping pushing the boundaries of funk all the time and some like gaz going right back the other way to its raw roots with the soundstylistics stuff https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGEVm_DRiCE. Another guy on here Alix, i went to see haggis horns but the band that was on before them Alix's band hot diamond aces were really good doing their own thing,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STcnel5eNag. if modern funk is your thing then check out some of the great bands on Freestyle records, https://freestylerecords.co.uk/ ....and jalapeno, http://jalapenorecords.com/ Great grooves to play on bass to get your chops up then check out down to the bone, nice stuff to play along to and will help you get grooves down. sorry to waffle on, hope it helps.
  13. MMMMMMMMM ....goodfellow, full of yummy fat sounding goodness.... KGB birkenhead makes some very nice basses, all out works of art or as basic as you want, just tell him what you want, and he will build it,.... http://kgb-music.co.uk/gallery.htm

  16. A 10 year old thread back to life 🙂 Jap crap, here ya go, 1960s Zenta TEZ, super rare early Matsumoku made, couple of three and four knob ones floating around but not many of these earlyer two knob ones, Controls are pot 1 Vol pot 2 tone pick up selector switch. whats great about this bass is the back pickup, it has a great honky sort of sound being closer to the bridge than the later ones, really usable, worth doing a vid for just to hear it, the front neck pick has that deep hollow sound that sounds a bit distant not very usable for me, when both pick ups are on it still has that hollow sound though if muted while playing aka rocco prestia style then you do get that nice thump to the notes, i can see where a blend knob would be a better option here as i would like the have 75% bridge and 25% neck just to add a bit of bass to that honk without rolling the tone off,. Quality wise some good bits and some bad bits but it has lasted well so may be not so bad bits, , 1 it has a multi laminated neck, on saying this it has a lowish action, tuners not bad, have had allot worse, bridge is a bit naff if you play too hard as i do you can move the string on to the next slot on the barol,, pickups though not strong do have a sound all of there own quite good infact esp that rear one, it also has nice big fat extendible pole pieces via a slot screwdriver, neck binding very good body binding front and back very good, and has a zero fret, and a solid 6 bolts for the neck, all in all not bad, usable and looks super cool, im thinking of using it in the next band vid. im just wondering if i can get a bigsby for this.
  17. Hi all, sorry i have been soooo bizzy, i will give kev a bell this weekend to see if we can fix a date for this year. pref when its a bit warmer and people wont get snowed in.
  18. Bass player wanted for Fusion jazzy stuff Warrington. Its all original stuff so the world is your oyster ! If interested let me know and i will pass on your number and give you a contact number.
  19. Some mods that might help, given the pickups are ok....worth a try maybe. on some wiring the earth runs through the pot to the actual plate, so the control plate is the earth run to the jack socket, anything to save a bit of wire !, you could try to tighten all the pot screws and jack socket screw ? If you feel like a bit of a project then here are two mods that made mine much more reliable for over 20 odd years with no problems, ever. It also sorts out that crackly sound jazz's get when the jack socket gets a baggy ring, owww errrrr misses 🙂 1, put a stereo jack socket in, this then will have a pin you can solder to that has a prong contact on to the sleeve of you input jack, as well as the ring of the socket. 2, Run a solid piece of twin and earth copper wire over the top of all the pots right to the lug of the jack socket, then solder to top of pots and jack socket, with a bit of wire sleeving on it between the pots. then solder a link to the other earth lug on the jack socket, ( or just bend the end of the long one and do it in one) This is the Hogie 1, Mod simple, tidy, solid, reliable. 100% good sig. ( image is only to show the earth mod)

  22. It always amazes me that a back line of a band learn every note and are usually solid but for the most brass players who are reading always manage to fu@k up and play without commitment to notes and they are reading ! i think im going to adopt Mr Toscanini work practice and get my whip out 🙂
