  1. Buy a second hand one?! Why the fascination with making a new item seem older than it is? Take cars for example. Take a vintage car, if it’s in great condition it’s worth more, if it’s battered it’s worth less.
  2. If only they’d putin some effort at their end!
  3. My Geddy Lee Jazz Bass is plenty clanky and about as driven sounding as i’d want my pups to be and they are all cts 250k pots.
  4. Hiya. Now I have a bass that I need to at least loosen the neck plate/bolts to access the truss rod, I have a question. When tightening the four neck bolts back up is it important that they are all torqued up the same? I’m guessing that in the factory this will be the case. If for example I tighten the bolts unevenly then will vibrations be reduced unevenly across the neck altering the sound/volume of each string in relation to the other? Is hand tight with a screwdriver good enough? We all have different hand strength and feeling on what is right/not tight.
  5. Last night went to a Paul Gilbert masterclass. Was a great night and he played two songs from his upcoming album too. It was at The Caves in Edinburgh, a great wee venue. Aside from Gilbert, he was supported by Chris on bass and an excellent drummer who’s name I’ve forgotten. Chris held things together superbly whilst the guitarists wandered off on multiple crazy shreds. They all seemed to enjoy their evening in a relaxed focused kinda way. Limited shots here: the bass was either an old Precision or maybe a custom shop with a crazy donkey scratch plate, plugged in to an Aguilar tonehammer I think
  6. Happy New Bass day. How long until the next one?
  7. Thanks very much for the info. What was the fancy neck plate? Ive managed to get be relief sorted (which in its self is a relief). Read some horror stories when I googled “Geddy Lee bass set up” but those must have been basses that had been ignored for too long. Next I’ll drop the string height just a touch at the bridge and I’ll be super happy. It’s a lovely thing to play, though it’s not making me play like Geddy!! Now I need a couple of easier Rush songs to learn.
  8. That’s right, though I’d still like one!! The geddy seems to be in perfect nick, like it was bought, hung on a wall or left in a case and never played. There’s a wee bit tarnishing on two of the frets towards the bridge. Will polish those up in the next few days.
  9. I’ve spent a couple of days with this now. Love it. A couple of observations: 1. Taking the neck off to adjust the truss rod isn’t ideal though it’s only a 5 min job. Relax strings, capo on to to hold them, unscrew neck plate, adjust truss rod, then reverse making sure there’s nothing in the pocket. I finally have string height down to 2.8ish mm. That was two quarter turns tightening the truss rod over 24 hrs. I’ll see how it’s settled in the morning. 2. Pickup output is noticeably lower than my Precision, though the tone is great and sounds hefty and articulate with both pickups open. Looking forward to getting some rehearsal volume.
  10. I’m not sure on this being an early model.... Just adjusted the truss rod quarter of a turn. That got me from 4mm at the 12th fret to just below 3.5. I’ll leave it a few hours and go for another quarter turn. It was at 3mm without tuning the strings up then up to the 3.5mm with tension. Hopefully that’s normal. To actually adjust the truss rod I couldn’t just take the scratch plate off as it didn’t reveal enough of the heal. Off with the neck then to reveal the date shown in the picture below. This confuses me as it suggests 03 as the year?? Can this be correct? Someone has adjusted the truss rod previously and left a slight scratch on the heal and probably used the wrong screwdriver as there are a couple of dents in the nut.
  11. It was either made between 1994-5 or 2007-10. How do you know the difference?
  12. @gjones thanks very much. I’ll give that a go when I put new strings on in the next few days. I don’t mind fettling so making the odd adjustment doesn’t bother me. Having played it for a while tonight it feels like a keeper. It’s condition is stunning. I like the variety of tone available just by dropping the neck pup tone in and out. It should work well in my loud rock band.
  13. Looking forward to getting to know it. Any tips on adjustments? I’ll keep it in the same room most of the time in a hard case so hopefully I’ll not need to fettle too much. I’ve not had a bass that needs it’s neck off to adjust before.
  14. Geddy Lee too. Saw this for sale pre-owned and thought I’d take the plunge with the money I’d been saving for a telecaster. Didn’t get the chance to try it before buying so a bit of a whim. I have hands on the big side, so was a bit wary of Jazz basses int be past. This doesn’t seem as narrow at the nut as some I’ve tried. Seems fairly comfy and is noticeably thinner front to back than my American Special Precision. The neck on the Precision is amazing and this Geddy is a different kind of amazing. Action is a tad high so I’ll tighten the truss rod a quarter turn when I put new strings on it later. Truss rod adjustment is hidden with the neck on. Condition wise, this bass seems as good as new to me so I feel I’ve really scored. Anyhow, no pictures and all that, so here we go....can someone in the know date it for me with the serial number there....
  15. PA and all sound gear belongs to and remains at the venue.
  16. Maybe the sound engineer should have let her work sort the issue out in the days or weeks leading up to the gig instead of leaving it until the minutes before sound check. Also, she fairly lumped is all in together, we have no connection with the “offensive” band in question!!
  17. I have a sublimation printer. That could actually happen!
  18. I find that offensive! We never had a gig last night.
  19. Frank Zappa would have had this sorted in a second. “Have I Offended Someone” is great and way ahead of it’s time (last night). I also agree that the venue (13th Note) should have had a contingency, as rightly pointed out, what if there was simply a call off due to illness. Waking up this morning my bubble is still deflated.
  20. We asked. They wouldn’t let us touch their gear. Also, the “offending” band offered to go home and leave their drum kit for us to use but the sound guy still refused!!
  21. Was supposed to be playing a gig tonight. We don’t do many so it’s a big thing for us when we do. Everyone from the three bands on the bill (our night) turns up on time, load all out gear in, get it partially set up....then. Venue guy says...sorry, your gig is cancelled because the sound guy is refusing to come in because of something one of the bands has written on their Facebook page. Turns out that the sound person is transgender. The Facebook post says “hi, we are (insert band name here) the areas most gender neutral band”. Turns out this was a very offensive comment to the sound person. They didn’t even tell their work they weren’t coming in, it was one of the punters that knows her that said!!! So, pi55ed off and so are the other bands. The band who’s post it was were very apologetic. If the sound person had such an issue surely they should have said much earlier. Most of our fans / supporters were told but a good few weee already travelling, have hotels booked, etc... not to mention the 80 mile round trip for me. Not right. Anyone else had similar experiences?!
  22. Ash can actually be pretty heavy. It’s generally a dense hardwood. There are many species though and swamp ash seems to come in a bit less dense.
