Quick update - my OCD got the better of me, finally. I originally specced a parchment guard (as in OP) for this bass, but every single Dakota P I've seen anywhere seems to have a green mint guard as standard. So I found an 'aged' USA mint P guard on eBay... you can't see the subtleties in this pic, but it's a great job, not overdone and fits very well with the overall level of relic. Pleased! Now I can forget all about that and concentrate on actually playing it!

Ha! I suppose we could swamp the seller with the same question. But that would be childish, wouldn't it? It's not contrary to eBay's rules, though. You can set whatever start price you like. Whether anyone will be mad enough to pay it is entirely another matter, of course.

Best-sounding was a USA Ampeg SVT CL and 8X10 cab. I think I may have mentioned it before somewhere.

Great, thanks for posting. He was a very underrated bass player in my opinion. An inspiration to McCartney y'know, along with Jamerson. Wilson used session players later in the BBs career, notably Carol Kaye on Good Vibrations. I think so anyway. I may have dreamt it and can't be bothered to Google it.

Bought a cab from Dave, very pleased! It's one I had, then sold, then missed and wanted back, so it's all good. Dave was very patient and was happy to lend me the cab to see if I liked it before I committed to buying it, and it doesn't get better than that. Recommended!

Another visit to John's man-cave, this time to pick up my Hayman bass, which had developed terminal I-know-not-what. John did know-what of course and did a sterling job getting it back to its former sonic glory which is great, as I was missing it quite a bit. Thanks John! I can only add to these pages of superlative feedback - you can deal with John with absolute confidence, he's a gent.

Looking at that pic it's less P bass and more Spector/Warwick isn't it? And there's nothing at all wrong with that. I'm kind of warming to it a bit. Still wouldn't buy it though.

Nice, but it would have to be a really, really exceptional-sounding and brilliant-playing instrument... because for that money I'd rather buy a pre-CBS P. And of course I've been genetically programmed to expect a four-in-line headstock with a P-shaped body. A 2+2 just seems wrong!! Yes, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool stick-in-the-mud who wears large-tena-lady-pants.
