1.
I know vaguely where the Clarendon College is - is the Grosvenor a hotel or a pub? We are talking the junction on Hucknall Road and the Mansfield Road right? If so, thats about 50 feet from my first digs in Nottingham many years ago... EDIT - found it - on the left as you go past Clarendon before you turn off left to Hucknall Road. I dont mind any saturday or sunday but wont be able to come if its the 14th Feb (for obvious reasons) or any other day that friday/weekend/monday as its my partner's birthday. It would seem sensible to avoid the same date as the Yorkshire one anyway. Week before/after perhaps?
Its the pub right on the junction of Hucknall Road and Mansfield Road. Opposite the Moat house. Still up for this. I'm not sure what I'll be bringing, as it depends what I have! Hopefully the Shuker will be finished by then. I'll bring the ATK if its not gone, Thumb, and my Precision.
 2.
i thought you loved this thing? I'd have loved it if it was a 4 string For anyone interested, these things sound the dogs danglies
I do love it, but have my eye on a Stingray 5, and can't justify both!
 3.
I agree in part. Certainly the neck is very different, but I personally find that the feel of the wenge/bubinga neck woods give something of a Warwick vibe. Also the small rounded body is a little thumb-like...
That's actually a very good point. The wenge/bubinga does give that ''organic'' Warwick feel.
 4.
Im looking for an inexpensive backup bass for my Streamer Stage II 5 strings. It should have similar neck profile and string spacing as the warwick so swapping between them shouldn't feel too different. Wood, electronics and hardware doesn't really matter but i would prefer a two pickup arrangement. My budget is £300 and I can buy new or wait till i find a good second hand deal. As far as i understand, Yamaha and Ibanez have very good value for money, but are the necks and spacing too different?
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Ibanez ATK305. By coincidence, this one has just been posted in the for sale section at a very good price (with apologies for the shameless plug ) http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=34177
 5. I bought it new about 12 months ago, and it is in perfect condition. Natural with black guard. These really are amazing basses for the money, and the triple coil pickup gives everything from active Stingray sounds to punchy traditional Precision sounds. Its also one of the easiest 5 stringers I've played I'm looking for £250. I'm also interested in trades - anything considered! I would prefer collection, and am happy to travel to meet up up half way within reason. .
 6.
I offered it to Simon for £140 including overnight courier. The bass is only about 3 months old from new.. I just can't get on with the lined board.
Which is a good deal for a nice bass. The only reason I didn't buy it was that I was really after a Jazz body, and would have had to have sold on the neck. Someone should buy it at this price!
 7.
PM Sent
And replied
 8.
Ish. Play it so that the edge of your fingertip is on the line. If you play it with your finger centred on the line, you'll be sharp. S.P.
Ish again! You really need to use the lines as a guide. IMO, there is no substitute for using you ears on a fretless, and you will need to make minor adjustments to where you "fret" a note as you play, rather than rely slavishly on the lines. All part of the fretless fun! I very nearly bought Pentode's VMJ a few weeks back - I think it looks fantastic with a tort scratchplate.
 9.
cant believe your gettin rid of a double buck....i have one and i must say its a f***in awesome bass. loads of punch and power a def must buy! ! ! ! !
Cheers - only selling as its fallen behind the Thumb as first choice 4 string. They are fantastic basses, and I would happily trade it for a $$ five string!

Complete opposite to the Warwick feel.
 11.
I wondered if there are some jam tunes that are complete Weller creations and they don't have permission to perform them or something?
Most Jam songs are solely credited to Weller - even songs like Town Called Malice, Start, or Tube Station, where the bass line drives the song. I think From The Jam did Eton Rifles when I saw them last year, so I doubt that is why its not in the set. Coincidentally, Weller is currently playing Eton Rifles as part of the set on his solo tour, along with some of the old Jam stuff (Butterfly Collector, That's Entertainment and Town Called Malice).
 12.
I've never really been convinced by the Variax, so i think I'll pass on that one. Sorry!
Bump Any interest?!
 13.
I don't suppose you'd be interested in a Variax 5 string would you?
I've never really been convinced by the Variax, so i think I'll pass on that one. Sorry!
 14.
There is a Siggery jazz in natural up on there now, and I've seen a red and black jazz by them up before too.
Off topic, but shouldn't the Canary in your avatar be back on his perch tonight, dontcarebear?!
 15. I'm looking to trade my Nirvana Black Warwick Corvette $$ 4 string for a 5 string of some description. There is a tiny mark above the pickup where my thumb has rested, but otherwise its in fantastic condition. I'm only looking to sell as my Precision and Thumb are my first choice 4 strings, and I've a 4 string Shuker on the way, so this just isn't getting played. I'm looking to trade for a 5 string - pretty open minded as to what, although my prefernce is probably for a Jazz of some type (not necessarily a Fender), Warwick, or Musicman (with cash either way for the right deal). I'm not a fan of very narrow string spacing. Here's a couple of pics. I will email better pics if anyone is interested.
 16.
Absolutely ridiculously low price
+1. Can't believe this hasn't gone yet.
 17. The Aphex Punch Factory is good for quite subtle compression. And I've also used the Boss Limiter pedal which is pretty good, and IMO underrated. But one of the nicest compressors I've use recently is the compressor in the Line 6 Bass Floor Pod - I'm not usually a fan of compressors in multi-effects, but its almost worth buying the floor pod for the compressor alone.
 18.
Wow, loads of "cheap 5 string" questions at the moment! If you want to buy new then my rec, as ever, is the Ibanez SR505BM. Nice woods, useful pre-amp and very playable.
+1. The SR500 series is the best value for money out there at the moment, provided you like the narrow string spacing and skinny neck. The Ibanez ATK305 is a good bet aas well.
 19. Another vote for the Ibanez ATK. Fantastic value, although mine is heavy. The Ibanez SR505 is an excellent bass too, although the string spacing is tight. Personally, though, if I were spending £350 in the curent climate, I would look to buy used.
 20.
For (too) many years, I have stuck to roundwounds, and no doubt will continue to carry on using them for my rock & funk playing. However, I'm loving the flats I put on my spare bass recently. Not only the sound, but also the silky smoothness of the feel. Just right for some of the retro blues stuff I'm jamming with some mates right now. I came across in this forum someone liking Nylon Tape Wound Bass Strings. How do these compare in sound and feel to flats, or are they very similar?
I tried a set on my fretless precision (which normally has flats). To me, they feel and sound very different. There was a ''floppiness'' to the ones I used, and the sound was very ''thuddy''. Much closer to an upright acoustic bass. The feel is very smooth - more so than normal flats. Personally, I didn't like them on the Precision. I ended up putting them on a cheap fretted acoustic, and they sound really great on there.
 21.
The answer? Perhaps get a cheapish 500w combo. Ashdown MAG series, perhaps?
+1 to the Ashdown MAG. I gigged with a MAG combo for a lot of years, and found it a really nice bit of kit.
 22.
I was thinking (have passed this past Dave Ryan's nose as well) of a clinic at Electro Music in Doncaster in the new year. Where we don't just show off our gear & chat, but we get to share experiences & technical knowhow with no pressure from "known" celeb players or anything. How does that sound? Rich.
I'd definitely be up for that. Only an hour away from me in North Notts, and Electro is always worth a trip!
 23.
or has he become much more ACTIVE
He's definitely the passive model - as you can see from this pic. And after chewing the pickup, he's lucky I didn't have him defretted......
 24.
Has Alfie given you any feedback? If so get him to stand away from your amp.
No feedback, but he does sometimes have a strange hum
