1.
I think its lack of sale is down to Ashdown's previous small head offerings, which were in all fairness, pure sh*te, and thats coming from an Ashdown fan. I'll admit, i have had a limited experience with the superfly and little giant, but the concensus seems the same. Liam
In fairness, some folk say that the earlier ashdown d class amps were innovative and pretty good, for the time. Also, it seems that a lot of the recent ashdown gear has really hit the spot. So, given that they've got early expeience in the class d market, and quietly finessing things in R+D for some time, it could be killer. Personally I wish it was a bit bigger, cos I don't like fiddly gear - but maybe I'm missing the point on that!
 2. Just to chip in....Ive used mostly an abm 3 for a couple of years now. Overall I'm really happy with it. Sounds ace; really meaty, defined - but with a slight blur to the tone (but in a warm/good way). Took a little while to get used to it, and a bit of trial and error, but good results in the end. Needless to say I bought the fullstack to go with it (cos I'm a dinasaur, and thought I needed it ) - and regret not looking at other options. Put together, it sounds awesome - though I'm not sure that the ABM 115 adds that much to be honest - and I never really get to use the (better sounding) 410 cos its a pain to shift up our narrow stairs! I'll change the cabs at some point. On the eq....Like others say, seems you can end up all over the place with just a bit too much of something. That might explain some of the reactions from folk who use them for one-offs, and then say never again! (or maybe they just don't like the flavour! fair enough). But for what its worth, as a starting point - I usually set at bass dial @ 11 oclock, mid dial @ 1 oclock, treble at 1 oclock. Both outside sliders up a notch. Inside sliders flat. Valve at 12oclock (10oclock of using the stingray). Shape switch off. Subbass on @ 8 oclock (not needed, but what the hell). Honestly cant decide what to do about the compressor (suggestions welcome!) Doubt that helps very much but it works for me
 3.
I don't remember the GB models I've tried, definitely not the Streamliner tho... Would love to try one, the thing is and amp or a cab really shows it's advantages/disadvantages when gigging, in a room they all sound good . As for trying another bass - I am thinking of getting a good jazz this year, probably a 5str Sadowsky, but I'll never part with my Stingray... it fits me so well, I think it's got something that many of the top basses can't provide...
Well I tried a streamliner last week (900 version) - and was dead impressed. I was determined not to like it either, on grounds of being newfangled but it got me thinking I need to start saving up! It struck me as being really slick and light - whislt also being a serious bit of kit. The "less is more" approach seems to get it right, like back to basics but without feeling like you're missing anything. And it sounded superb in the shop (not a good road test I know )...really meaty, which might have something to do with all those values. I dunno. But it seemed to go really well with the ray I used, which not everything does. I'd love to hear that amp in a band situation. I haven't researched them at all, so can't comment on reliability etc.
 4. Live in cases are a good option, if you don't mind the bulk, cos the amps really well protected and you don't have to take it to bits - and just unclip the front&back for gigs. You can get them for any make of amp. I got a couple of spaces added for rack toys (yup, should have got a rack amp to start with ). Its quite heavy so not for the lightweight folk!. I'd guess the case + rack stuff weighs about the same as the amp on its own. Looks cool, so thats ok.
 5.
The is a Peavey 1820 or similar in for sale, it has biamp capability, so you can run two amps in, the mid drivers won't cope with that orange full tilt though. Might be able to rig a hi-pass before the Orange to keep them shiny and safe. Edit: checked and the one in for sale isn't made for biamping, but could probably be made to be.
I've got an 1820 that is made for biamping, and has separate inputs for the 10s and the 18 (sort of two cabs in one, I think). Its great fun if you like that sort of thing - especially with the 18. Both the 10s and the 18 run at 8ohms. Weighs a ton and sounds fab.
 6.
Hello, Mr Ashdown person. I wish you every success with the launch of the miBass but my question has to be asked: has anyone at Ashdown considered the wisdom of making a ten quid optional extra this product's main USP?
In fairness its not the main thing is it? and its got some people talking about it.
 7.
Indeed, it was wrong for the LG and it's wrong now...
what makes it wrong?
 8.
It's more evidence to suggest that Ashdown's marketing people are completely out-of-touch.
hopefully the product reviews will say otherwise
 9. Its great you can have your own design printed on it. That should appeal to the people who paint their wheelie bins.
 10. I've had both ranges. I couldn't tell you the exact differences, other the what's on the website. But IMHO the ABM head is worth every penny over the MAG, and felt like a proper upgrade. I think the Mag amp was good value for money, but its not intended to be top notch. The difference between speakers seemed less noticable to me. So based on that, I'd be tempted to upgrade the amp, keep the speakers.
 11. I take a spare bass & DI. But bust strings are the least of it tho, eh. We 've had power cuts, blown fuses, toppled speakers (audience assisted), snapped guitars (being clumsy, not rock n roll), collapsing drum risers (very funny) and horror-of-horrors bass amp falling off the speaker and down the back of the stage - no idea how I managed that. We have a spare song with an extendable intro (of the sort than can be done minus one band member whilst someone takes a minute to fix something). The audience only ever notices if the music stops.
 12. It just makes more commercial sense to launch with a range of options that they can market test. If nobody buys 400w version, eventually they'll just stop making them & no harm done. And they'll have got more publicity by lauching a full range than just one amp - sends a strong message that they're serious about this side of the market. Good on em.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Peavey-Bass-Cab-1-x1...5#ht_500wt_1156 :-)
I've got that same cab! I imagine it was designed by a hard-up chiropractor. Even so, its an absolute beast and unbelievably loud. The 18 is clear / not muddy at all. Lots of fun to be had with the bi-amp too. Just to be silly I sometimes run mine with an extra 410 or a 115, for the eq practice and to see if I can get next doors cat to sh*t itself. Its definately a 2-man lift (coupled with lots of swearing). Great fun and sounds brilliant.
 14.
Come om HH is surely the way to go!!!!!
Yeah I'm well happy with mine!
 15. Westone Thunder 1a. First bass - and still gets used the most 25 years on
 16.
I have owned H (pre and post EB) , HS and HH in my opinion HH is best, most versatile, and with the EQ set flat has a great core tone - no issues with the G string disapearing and sounds great in a band mix
I wonder how this poll would have turned out if it was only open to the people who have owned all three. I haven't - so I'd be disqualified :-)
 17. What about a Yamaha BB2024x? Ok its WAY too pricey for mere backup bass - but its soooo coooool. Top notch piece of kit for others to envy from afar? And has the P/J thing going on.
 18. or how about a HS to HSS conversion .... someone posted on TB a while back... http://www.youtube.com/embed/wqHBhvI1Kb0 I'm sure there's no point, but it looks fun
 19. HH, predictably The option to use the mid coils together (position 4 on the selector) is whats won it for me - killer sound - tho 25 years using mostly p basses may have coloured my judgement! Don't really bother with the other settings too much. The neck pup doesn't sound that good on its own IMO - but plenty to choose from with the other settings.
 20.
That's basically what a Ray is though with it fixed in the right place, Leo knew where was best after that you just use the preamp to go from dubby jazz neck sound but more or trebly bridge sound. This relates to the many tales of what bass is used on what record debate where the right hand technique is more prominent than the core tone of the bass.
yep I'm sure ole Leo knew best - but I still really like some of the sounds I can get with the extra H (some, not all). Its a variation on a theme, and thats ok by me. Nowt wrong with that eh?
 21.
+1
-1 I get that less can be more - but it is also really good to have some other options. It doesnt take long to figure out which one is the favourite.
 22. Mines part of a Peavey fridge, also home to a couple of 10s and a family of large spiders (BW pun aside - they are really large spiders). If I had some gardening gloves and a fork-lift truck I'd use it all the time. The 18 sounds magnificent with a 410. Go figure. I'm with you, wildly inaccurate sales guy!
 23. I can only comment on the Ashdown stuff, as thats what I have - but plus 1 that its likely to be a good fit with the styles you mention. The AMB range is much more meaty than Mag, so worth spending a bit more now, than having to upgade later. Haven't tried the JJ amp - but it would definately be on my hit list. Personally, I've found seperates are generally better for portability, flexability and not having to upgrade all in one go. There seems to be some good pricing here http://www.theacademyofsound.co.uk/Ashdown_Bass_Amplifiers (I'm not on commission :-) I've got a zoom pedal too - and its ok as a toy but not sure I'd bother with it live. As for lightweight - well its a consideration, sure, but if it was all about convenience, no one would have drummers. :-) Running for cover!
 24. Can't help with the date either - but I am totally jelous of that amp. Same model as my first bass amp (*sigh*) which i bought in junk shop in 1985, and it sounded awesome. I gormlessly traded in for a sh*t solid state combo of some sort (may have been a cougar) because the combo was 100watts and I therefore thought it must be twice as good. What a doofus. A life of bitter regret ensues ...
 25.
You dont lose a lot of room with the HS, and IMO its a good 'inbetween' setup. Cool H sounds like a normal Ray, and more.
Yep, I have HH and the extra pup doesn't get in the way for me either. It only took a few minutes playing to adjust to where everything is. As for the tone, the mid coils or outer coils (positions 2 and 4 on the selector) have the edge I think. Its always those ones I go back to anways :-)
