2.
Ah, another one bites the dust.
We shall see !
3.
There are a few vids on YT with a Stingray/flatwounds. Have a listen perhaps. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_quer...ingray&aq=f
Thanks for that. I was hoping that they'd all sound rubbish, so I could forget about it. As it is I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and try some out!
4. Ok its got me thinking! I only tried flats once - many years ago - and thought they felt too weird and sound a bit dull. They had to go. But now I have a stingray - and I think I might need to calm it down a bit, so its not too agressive in combination with my style...I normally play alt rock with a pick. Are flats the way to go? Yeah I know I should go and try some - but I'm too cheap for that without some second opinions first
5.
Some great sounds there in the video...and all typically MM but it will take you ages to find them all and dial them in .... and that is without messing with the amp.. Sometimes it gets very confusing to have these sounds with so much variation on gigs.. I don't think you'll touch the amp for a good few months... or else you be chasing your tail for ever. You also might want to consider how those two big pups get in the way of your playing style...??
Its not that bad....middle coils, trebble down a bit. Hello Glastonbury! :-)
6. I won't attempt to describe the tones too much as I'm still getting used to mine....but its fair to say HH has a much broader palate.....Here's the selector rundown from my point of view... 1. The neck pickup soloed is (for me) the least usable tone. yep it is darker, but doesn't quite have the required bite on its own. 2. The two pups in combination are where the fun starts. The inner coils together retain the bright signature sound, but with the addition of a more meaty more P-like grrrr (nearly said P-ish...I probably am talking pish :-). It sounds killer, and really sets it apart. This is the one for me! 3. All 4 together....mmm not sure. I thought I'd use this all the time, but I think theres too much of the bridge pup in it for me. Maybe the HS version has a better balance? - dunno. 4. The two outer coils give really lively scooped sound. Again, sounds ace - and cuts through particularly well - and a bit different to the normal ray sound 5. (whilst running for cover) the bridge pickup soloed is exactly the same as the single H 3-band version (given usual variables of string age and all that).
7. I can't be arsed either - except I really missed playing after a 10 year break. I found its really hard to hook up with people who can play and are ok, but also can't be arsed to the exact same degree as me :-) .....ie to fit stuff around jobs, kids and wotnot, but without it being a chore. There always seemed to be a band member or two with hopeless ambition. Thats not an option for me now - I've been signed before, and know its not gunna cover the bills or allow the time i need with family. Anyhow I've stuck with it - and advertised for talented lazy bast*rds. Turns out there are plenty of them in the same boat as me. Nearly at a full line up, so fingers crossed.
8.
Nope but I was told anything up to 20 weeks, equal +/- 5 months. Don't know if that is accurate or not but that's what the distributor told the shop *(Bass Gallery in Camdem)*
I was told 4 months. Was actually 9. The delay apparenlty wasn't at the factory but in waiting for the next batch order to be shipped to the UK. So I guess its luck how close this next shipment is! The buggers....when you pay £1000+ you'd think they'd ship it as soon as the paints dry. No complaints with the finished thing tho. Its a beast.
9.
I have no idea which colour pickguard to go for. Any suggestions as to what would look good with PBB and Rosewood?
Hello. I have a PBB StingrayHH. Rosewood neck + matching headstock. After much deliberation I settled on a plain black pickguard to go with it. Turned out to be the right choice with that combination, cos the PBB colour is so unusual (pictures don't do it justice) I think a fussy pickguard may have been too much. Maple or Rosewood? Doesn't matter really, its what you like best. BTW I think that the "main" musicman distributer in the UK is www.stringsandthings.co.uk So they can tell you who to order from locally. Expect up to 9 months lead time - despite what they say in the shop. Long wait - but worth it! When it eventually arrived tho, my bass was really well set up / just what I expected (better even) / no problems at all.
10. I have PRC ashdown cabs, made in 2008 or 9 and drivers blue. I think they switched to black last year for all their range, even high end stuff - looks to be same spec etc. Don't worry about it.
11. I started using one recently as somehow I'd drifted past groove and into the land of slop :-) Few weeks with the beat thing on a zoom b2 put me back on the straight and narrow (sort of). Good for working up ideas etc too. I wouldn't use one all the time tho, cos that would be dull - but now and again is definately a good thing.
12.
I read back my post this morning and it sounds very anti-power conditioner. It's not ment to be - what I mean is if you want to use one because it lights up your rack, and provides and easy rack-mountable set of sockets for you to plug in all your great then it's great. If you want to use one for the conveniance, then I think you should - but I would never say you NEEDED one as if they were essential.
Thats what I think too :-) I think they can be handy for various reasons - but I'll probabaly swap mine eventually for a more useful 1u gadget. Just cant decide on one just yet!
13. I've got one: a samson pb10. I know I don't need it. And TBH I've no idea how will it protects my gear (although I do use iffy rehersal rooms, and play the odd outdoor gig so maybe its a good idea). Mostly it fills up an empty rack space until I can think of something else to put in it. :-) On the plus side, its very handy a power hub that I can run all my gear through, with a single plug/on switch for the lot. And it has some cool slidy-outy lights that are much better than the so-called racklight on, say, a KorgDTR. Thats what sold it if I'm honest!
14. Ashdown stuff I've bought in last 12 months has all been prc. Its been aboslutely fine. The Mags and ABM are quite different beasties. The mag range is excellent balance of quality and value. But if you've got the extra dosh, abm all the way :-)
15. I don't know the others but have had several Ashdowns. If I was getting an ABM combo, it would probably be the 210 version. Personal taste I know, but having tried em side by side I think the 210 wins it. The valve drive is good in moderation, as it adds another layer without getting blurry (at lower settings).
16.
Nice to see someone else big up New Model Army - all 3 of their bass players seeem to be ignored
+ 1 for NMA bass players (all three of em). Each very different. Each brilliant. It always seemed a shame that Stu Morrow never really re-emerged to the limelight, following his NMA departure in 85. I've heard that Moose is now a paramedic. Good to see NMA thriving without any corporate support - and are currently better than ever!
17.
buy an HH model dual humbacker. With this you have many option in the tone you get the classic tone stingray http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY0WxgSXdEE if you want to sound like pressision you can as well with the switch selector
+1 As far as I can tell, the HH bridge pup is identical to the single H version. I was aiming for a hybrid tone (slightly more more p-bass like) and the other HH selections/combinations achieve that really well. In any event its certainly very versitile.
18.
I have an Epiphone Thunderbird, I feel your pain.
Epiphone EB3: ditto. I never knew a bass could be so poorly balanced! Wide leather strap solved it.
19. I think a tiny bit of chorus definately adds a shine to the sound. I use a very small amount live tho - else it sounds mushy and 1980s! and only when I'm not using any other effects, suboctave or whatever. less is more I think :-)
20. You can get live-in flight cases with rack spaces added... http://shop.castlecases.co.uk/product_info...products_id=572 Here's how my Ashdown head turned out... (I just sent measurements, and specified amount of rack space) The advantage is that it can stay in its original housing and you can slide it out in one piece whenever you need to, and you get to have everything stored in one unit. The disadvantage is that you end up with quite a heavy unit. In hindsight I might have asked for less padding / smaller box. Looks good tho imo
21. Yep, both on the current versions I think. Earlier versions might have been 1/4 only. If its dual/combi connectors its definately worth checking with both types of cable (and waggling them about a bit) because I had to return two ABM heads because of these: absolutely fine with 1/4, but loose connection with speakon. So if it the cable moved slightly in the socket, it cut out. I probably just found a dodgy batch, so nowt to worry about. Just worth a good check-over is all. :-)
22.
Maple for looks. Rosewood for playing. Rosewood it is then.
+1 Suppose its just what I'm used to but rosewood always seems so much better. Dunno why.
23. regrets ...Selling my first amp head, a 1960s fender bassman silverface (bought in a junk shop in Scunthorpe in 1986 for £50) to buy....wait for it.....a cougar 115 combo. Why? because it was new and extra 50w. Obviously it pailed in comparison. I weep when I see what those heads go for on ebay. Consolation...I was 18 and just didn't know any better. ...buying my peavey 1820 cab, rather than something that can be moved without a forklift truck. Ok slight exageration, but I can't shift it on my own and thats a hassle. At the time bigger was definately better. ....buying my Epiphone EB3. Actually I have mixed feelings about it. It looks amazing and plays well. But having got to know it I just wish it was, well, better. The bridge falls to bits when I change the strings, the set neck feels a bit cheap and the pickups (although ok combined) are naff individually. Record with it? I don't think so. I'm loathed to part with it tho. Its the classic dilema "dead good looking vs slightly annoying". Ring any bells? :-)
24.
I'll take a look now, thanks! I'm just after a reliable bass tuner I don't need flashy extra lights to call in a mothership!
The rack-light on the Korg DTR2000 is pretty feeble - doesn't make my rig look like quite enough of a christmas tree on its own. TBH I wish I'd saved 50squid and got the one without (the 1000 model). The tuner itself seems pretty good tho. And its well handy to have an integrated tuner.
25. I recently got a custom (live-in) flightcase for my amp head, partly for transport proctection partly as an excuse to get a couple of rack spaces built-in for tuner and stuff (a bit unnecessary I know, but it saves faffing about cos everything is now in one unit, always hooked-up, one power switch etc). Cost about £190. I'm really chuffed with how it turned out, seeing as I didn't think to go rack-mount to start with. The downside is it is now quiet heavy and bulky. I'd guess it doubled the weight of the head. Its still portable enough - but you wouldn't want to carry it far! Obviously I wouldn't fly it anywhere.
