1. I much prefer Lemmy's Hawkwind days in terms of his bass playing, in Motorhead he plays it too much like a guitar IMO (still a cracking band though).
2. Played a fifteen minute slot at an open mic night on Friday, at Base Studios in Stourbridge. My first gig with my punk band, it was a lot of fun (though we cocked up the original song we decided to play, no-one had heard it before, so they didn't notice the mistakes). We got a pretty good crowd reaction (admittedly there weren't that many people there) and got quite a few compliments for the performance. Overall, a good night.
3. Seventeen years old and I can hear all of them. Strange, cos my hearing's generally pretty weak.
4. To be honest I wouldn't have noticed that if my dad hadn't pointed it out to me when I first watched the film. Brilliant song, need to learn it at some point.
5.
Really? I can't see it on their web site. And since no-one has yet posted a photo of the most iconic of 2-string basses I thought I might as well:
That's. Friggin. Amazing.
6. Gorgeous and great to play. Buy one and you won't regret it...as mentioned above, the only issues are the pickups, but other than that I've found it to be an all-round amazing bass.
7. JJ Burnel from the Stranglers Geddy Lee from Rush Probably the key influence on my playing at the moment is Klaus Flouride from the Dead Kennedys...a lot of following the guitar, but with some very nice bass runs/fills during songs like 'Kill the Poor'.
8. Sex Pistols - Holiday in the Sun Tonight I'm working on learning 'London Calling' by the Clash and 'Too Drunk to F***' by the Dead Kennedys.
9. Not a huge fan of either, but I'd go for Mark King. I think Flea's veryd, but kind of overrated in my opinion (everybody and their dog seems to go on about how good he is, when in my opinion there are better bassists).
10. Les the (Iba)nez and Brenda the Fender. Yes, I'm sad.
11. Agreed with many people here, it looks pretty naff to have all the cabs altered with the logo on. Just a backdrop would do.
12.
I bass myself to sleep sometimes. I'm not sure which is more sad: that or the nightmare.
Nothing sad about that, times have been when I've got out of bed in the middle of the night because I don't feel I've played enough bass that day and can't sleep until I do. It's perfectly healthy. Probably.
13. I think a fair few bands have trouble starting up in an evening, and tend to get better as time goes on (unfortunatelt, most of the gigs I seem to do are fifteen minute slots, and so there's never much time to warm up and let people see me/the rest of the band at their best ) As leonshelley01 said, it helps to have proper warm-ups, other than that it's hard to think of anything to really help you get through this, other than practising.
14. Yet guitarists seem to make poor bassists...at least the ones I meet Whenever I see a guitarist claiming he can play bass, it ends up as a load of fret-w***ery...sure, they can play fast, but not necessarily well. (This is only in my experience, anyway, I am aware that there are guitarists who can play bass well).
15. Excellent, cheers mate, I'll be trying some of them out this evening.
16. Me pimping it up with me wenches...OK, they're actually not my wenches but I can dream. It was the best photo I could find of myself, in most others you can't see my face (cos my hair's in the way, these are usually at gigs) or I'm doing something stupid (usually while being drunk).
17. Whenever I've had blisters, I kept on playing - the one time I did pop one, it made it a lot harder (well, more painful) to play.
18. Most of the Stranglers' stuff The Body Electric by Rush Transylvania/Another Life/Wasted Years/Be Quick or be Dead by Iron Maiden That's about all that come to mind at this point.
19. In my old band, there was 'Pain for Pleasure' by Sum 41 (cos I don't like the song), One of our own songs (the guitarist told me what to play, consequently I dreaded playing it cos it was really boring 'dum-dum-dum-dum-dum' rubbish bass), Sweet Child o Mine (I never really learnt it properly admittedly, a lot of it was improv so I was never sure what I was doing...it didn't seem worth learning properly as we only played it live once) and Symphony of Destruction by Megadeth (really easy and boring on bass, IMO).
20.
You what? Try the whole of Rust In Peace?
Alright then, I'll give it a listen...to be fair, I've only really heard the greatest hits and the last two albums, so maybe I can't really comment...it's just that from what I've seen, a fair bit of it seems to be following the guitar or playing something rather similar to it. But if you say Rust in Peace is good for em, I'll check out the numbers I don't know from it.
21. Don't think much of either of them, to be honest. Don't get me wrong, Megadeth is one of my favourite bands, but neither have any really standout basslines IMO...
22.
I'm not that bothered about the style/type/genre of music these days. It's more about the musicians I'm playing with. If they are convinced about what they are playing (i.e. enthusiastic, or know & love the genre) then I'll really enjoy it too. I hate playing music that I love with people who are less than enthusiastic about it, .....................................but then again not many people like "acid country" J
'Acid country'?!?!? I haven't heard of this before, but it's aroused my curiousity...
23. Not really. I was in a thrash metal band until a few days ago, but quit because we were playing a lot of stuff that I really didn't like playing (ok, so it was really because I got drunk and angry, but still). Though to be fair, that wasn't really a case of not liking the music, it was more that it was the sort of thing that I don't find particularly enjoyable to play on bass. Most of it was pretty bland lines that would just follow the guitar, which I really didn't enjoy playing. It wasn't so bad if we were covering songs, but when the guitarist was telling me to play similar lines in our own material then I got really irritated with it.
24. Depends. In terms of my amp, appearence doesn't matter all that much to me, so long as it's loud. With a bass though, I need something that I like the look of. Sound is more important to me, but I'm confidant that for every ugly bass I try with a good sound I'm sure I could find another, better looking one whose sound I would like equally. Additionally, arse.
