Any more news/views of the 6-stringers? I don't need another bass, but I could do with a half-decent basic guitar for my studio.
Yep, my white tele has gone back to the parcel farce depot, as I missed them by 5 minutes... bugger. You did ask for news right?
-
Wish I hadn't looked at this thread now, just pulled the trigger on a white tele. Will save me doing all the weird mods I was going to do on my old 70s jap one, which I can now skip/sell for funds.

Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.

Slightly pretentious shot from Spaced Invaders photoshoot. Bass looks good though. -
I used to hate them but I quite like them now. I like the green on the Fender 9050s stainless steel flats as it happens.
Green = great. looks marvellous on my old green P, and goes with the fireglo on my rickenbastard as well.
Beastie Boys (say what you like they are amazing live, and can do what they do with almost any instrumentation you happen to have available), The Skints, Hunting Bears (Leeds), any of the following: Sonic Youth, Pixies, Breeders.
IIRC Sonic Youth were on later a couple of years ago.

To all my fellow franken builders out there. Any of you used Dr Parts stuff before? And is it any good, cos it sure is cheap, and in my book, that makes it very tempting. I'm planning on building a tele (I know it's a guitar) and I don't want to spend much, so getting a neck and a body for under £100 is mighty tempting. Any opinions/experience greatly appreciated

If something falls off, i like to screw it back on. That's about it. Though when even my flats sound dead, I rub them with WD-40, works a treat. And I constantly fiddle with the setup on all of them. Oh, and I would like to wipe the sweat off after every gig, but I keep forgetting, so my pickup screws are rusted chunks of filth, no fun when I change them out for the next great idea...
See what he did there? The thing about Rory Gallagher is that he always attributed the remarkable amount of wear on his guitars to the very 'acidic' nature of his sweat. He eventually died of a liver dysfunction. Any connection?
Perhaps, I always like to think that the night that strat spent under a hedge probably helped a bit too. FWIW, my guitars are pretty darned worn in after 20 years of gigging them, I also have very "acidic" sweat. Though interestingly, since I stopped drinking as much, my newer acquisitions aren't wearing out as quick... hmmm...

Don't know if it's the best, but hasn't been mentioned, Almost Famous, nice use of Elton in the middle there...

What Songs in your setlist do you hate playing?
Dave Vader replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
Flock of Seagulls - Wishing utter, utter, dirge, and neither me or the guitar player can remember the boring e-bow sequence at the end. Cue staring at cheat sheets stuck to monitors.... -
Kent Armstrong Hot P vs Hot Vintage P vs Seymour Duncan SPB-3
Dave Vader replied to Paul S's topic in Accessories and Misc
I have a Kent in my P, it is very hot indeed, not just a clever name. I bought it cos it was cheap, bit I really don't feel the need to replace it, it sounds pretty darned thumpy, bassy and good. And, if you don't like it, it only set you back 30 notes or so... -
There are always more women, there are always more bands, but most of us like to have both at the same time. Any one who tells you to stop doing something (unless it's punching them repeatedly in the face) is not good for you, relationships are about give and take, but if you don't want to give that much, it's the wrong relationship.
So...based on the information in this thread, is it reasonable for me to ask my Mother to let me off doing the washing up in future because it makes me worse at bass playing?
Doesn't work on my wife, can't see it working on your mum...
Some of the lads on here have started using Methylated Spirits to clean their strings. If you're one of them, immerse your fingertips in (clean) meths for 5-10 minutes every day. I just balance mine in a flattish old saucer on the chair arm while I'm watching the idiot box. I tried it after an old Double-Bass player told me about it, and it actually works.
I clean my strings with WD-40, will that work as well? No seriously, might give this a go, no smoking at the same time right?
I don't have hard finger tips and last week I practised for several hours a day and did 4 gigs. Turn the amp up and don't hit the strings so hard.
Did that Thursday night at an open mic in town. Works fine until we play something a bit exciting, then I come over all Steve Harris and deafen the world.
Have you been washing the dishes lots lately? I find the long soak my fingers get while doing the dishes ruin my callouses complete.y
Yep, but then I always do, I have teenagers....

Weird weekend, gigs both friday and saturday night, decided to take my recently completed Jazz bass project with me (probably not it's fault though). We've had it a bit quiet the last month or so, only one or two gigs, and I've not been practising a lot, but in 20 years of gigging my fingers have never hurt so damn much, can't touch anything, both hands! No idea why, same old fender flatwounds (new set on the J, might have something to do with it) same old hands, same old 80s tunes. Turns out though, the J is not as forgiving as my old P, there's nowhere I can get all 4 of my fingers in without one of them clipping a pole piece and stinging even worse. Had to switch back to the P for the 2nd set last night. Anyone else had a sudden loss of of hard fingertips? Just out of interest?
-
get three fingers going on the right hand and you'll have no problem! aside from that its practice!
Try all 4, works for me.

low tuning, finger playing, flapping strings, thumb rest?
Dave Vader replied to Chest Rockwell's topic in General Discussion
I couldn't bring myself to drill holes in my "beloved" so got these stick-on rubber pads from B&Q. Put 2 near the neck and 2 near the bridge (work great £1.99)
I'm off to B&Q, that's bloody brilliant.... -

Put your thumb on the pickguard. -
Right now, Warpaint, pretty much all day long. Sadly can't see many suggestions as I'm at work, and youtube is blocked. Anyone want to label their choices for those of us who forget to look back when they get home?

The one you wish you'd never EVER sold...
Dave Vader replied to Jigster's topic in General Discussion
Sorry.
Long as it's in a punky world it's okay. Mine was the main workbeast of the mighty Lean Against the Washing Machine for the 2 years before I sold it. Don't regret the Yamaha SG1000 though, never really liked it, though should as always have got more for it, and the vintage hiwatt cab, sound city head etc. etc.... -
The one you wish you'd never EVER sold...
Dave Vader replied to Jigster's topic in General Discussion
Not a bass, a Gordon Smith GS-1 guitar, had to sell it so I could eat and stuff back in 98. Only got 175 for it, can't get another one for that now... boo... and Waynes got one, makes me jealous.... I occasionally think of the Yamaha BB414 I offloaded a couple of years ago for £100 (only cost me £80) but I never really got on with it, which is why it went. -
Got it back together again, routed it out flat (ish) after finding the bit. But then had to shim the pocket as I had gone down too far. Doh! Anyhow, not too bad so far. Bridge pickup was a bit tinny, so I tried the tonerider I had lying around instead. Better, but still tinny, is this a J thing? Even sounds higher when you clonk it with a screwdriver, so not just placement. Tried switching the phase, made no difference. All through identical pots for once as well... hmmm... Will combine all these threads into a build thread soon, I have pictures (not a lot, but some)
