1. I use a firewire express card in my HP laptop... I have recorded 8 inputs together with no glitches - in fact, I've never had a problem at all with it. Similar to this one on Amazon.
2. free 15'' Celestion here in recycling
3. Try it without the battery, with the power set to 'always on' in control panel > power options.
4. I got the 202's - very pleased with them all round including their bass...
5. floating thumb technique - I don't even notice myself doing it after 15 years or so...
6. Do yourself a favour and download Reaper - an uncrippled, unexpiring fully functional Demo here It should get on fine with your Alesis mixer and be a whole lot easier to get to grips with than Cubase...
7.
I'm a bedroom studio geek, and for me the best software for home audio recording, at least in terms of value for money, is Propellerhead's Record: http://www.propellerheads.se/products/record/ Costs about £160, but does absolutely everything you'd ever want and is 100% stable: seriously, come the apocalypse, there'll be a computer somewhere, still happily running Record (along with a TV playing re-runs of Friends on E4... but I digress). If you're interested in writing your own songs, or producing 'saleable' quality recordings of a band, then I recommend checking it out. You can download a demo for free, which let's you play with the software without being able to save your work - frustrating, but you can have it running all day if you like and get a feel for it.
Me too... 51m0n just beat me to it Reaper is a DAW that can produce pro quality recordings, is as stable and versatile as you described - unlimited tracks, unlimited VST/i's, PC and Mac compatible, MIDI capable etc,etc,etc.... It comes as an unexpiring, uncrippled demo that lets you register for $40 ( it's on offer atm) when you want - all in a 4.9mb download. I like it so much I paid for it!
8. No need to clamp the capo hard up against the fret ( creating a sharpening effect)... finger strength pressure applied backed off from the fret will work a treat. I reckon a capo should be used like your fingers, I like to play with minimal pessure and let the fret do the work - same with a capo imho... Sorry if this comes across as argumentative, but I just want to save the OP from buying a series of capo's and save frustration.
9.
Is there one thats really good ? That doesn't screw the tuning up on your guitar ? Got a Shubb and it's ok but there are still tuning issues. Within reason not bothered how much, need to sort this if I can.
I use a Shubb with no problems on my guitar... I'm guessing the nut on your guitar is not cut low enough - pulling the tuning sharp as you apply the capo. To test: capo at the third fret and tap directly above the metal of the first - you should just hear a click as the string hits the fret indicating a very small gap, Any discernable gap/clearance here will make for sharp tuning - cut slots or sand the bottom of the nut until at 'click' clearance. I am assuming the action and Truss rod are set somewhere near... HTH Mick

11. Great post from 51m0n.... Reaper and plugs will get you a long way - room treatment even further...
12.
Except the last part where it suggests disconnecting the AC ground to break a "ground loop". Don't ever do this. You might kill someone !
This is a never ever type bodge - also a big part of my previous post....
13. You could check your mixer, amps etc have got decent earth connections - and the power sockets you are pluggng into while you are there... S'where I'd start - then go to leads and interconnects ( I have a speaker lead that sounds like an old dial-up modem if my laptop is too close, for instance).
14. Bought a compressor from Stevie, a very smooth transaction with a really sound chap.

17.
Bruce Foxton in The Jam, and JJ Burnell in The Stranglers bringing the bass up front in the music inspired me.
Hearing the Beatles and Motown as a kid got me noticing basslines, the above got me playing.
18. I'm another H2 user, Great for live recording using the mics - even better using tape out from the PA I like to use it as a studio mic for vocals, cabs, ambient etc - standalone or into the interface It can be used as a USB mic or interface if you wish too...
19. You could use our humble home studio here - with drums, bass and guitar amps, mics etc available - very, very welcome...
20. If the'on hold' turns into 'for sale again', I'd like these for my old Traynor Bassmate. Cheers Mick.
21. These work well - great detailed sound for the size.. M-audio StudioPro 3
22.
You don't NEED a VSTi because there are some standard MIDI sounds built into windows (or standard soundcards, not sure). You do have to set an output for your MIDI channel.
Oops, It's been so long since I used the Microsoft SW synth - I'd forgotten all about it. I have only ever used MIDI for drums and keys as I record my own (and Wifey's) bass and guitar - so I never needed a full band file.
23. You need to run the midi file through a VSTi ( basically, an instrument added as an effect) to get sound - google 'free vsti' to see the multitude of free drums, pianos etc. I use and recomend Reaper so I cant help with adding a VSTi to Cubase... to add a VSTi in reaper you simply add a midi file to a track click the track fx button and add the instument you want. Reaper is an fully functional unexpiring demo, btw.
