1.
IMO there's nothing more perfectly buttock-clenching than watching a plump white-collar middle-aged Englishman singing about 'his' experiences on a chain-gang in 1930's Alabama. It's just silly.
And by the same token, unless you actually have shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die, I'd avoid the Folsom Prison Blues, too.
 2. The problem with blues is that it can get a bit samey, so it's worth seeking out those songs that have some variation on the standard 12 bar chord structure. Off the top of my head, Dr. Feelgood is a good example.
 3. Look, if I don't indulge myself, who will? Answer me that.
I don't have a problem condemning punk and don't think it's too difficult to define...certainly, in the context of this discussion.
PUNK = Music made by people who can't play for people who can't tell.
 4. In the OP's defence, I am currently getting the following ads on my work pc basschat session: Single Women on Match.com Thousands of Single Women are waiting for you. Sign up for Free! www.match.com Fixed Price Repairs Value for Money Fixed Price Repairs on All Citroën Models of Any Age. I repeat, this is my work pc, in the office, so absolutely no pron or "singles" site accessing, nor have I ever owned, or enquired about spares for, a Citroen.
 5. Everybody seems to be focusing on which bass they'd prefer to sell or would mind selling the least, but if, as the original question suggests, I was short of cash and needed to sell a bass, I'd also be looking at which one would be most likely to sell quickly and for a good price.
 6. You've had just one rehearsal for music that's well outside your comfort zone, in a genre you're not used to and on an instrument that's not your usual gig, and you're worried that you can't play the material fluently??? You need a bit less and a bit more
 7. I was expecting something much weirder...then I realised I was confusing Anthony Jackson with Anthony Braxton...
 8. Sold my Markbass CMD 121P to Neil (Basstard). A pleasure to deal with, and an interesting chap. He drove for about three hours to collect the amp from my house, and arrived within 5 minutes of the agreed time. Now that's reliable!
 9. Ah yes - the logic of commercial pop: save your main imaginative and creative effort for the marketing strategy rather than the music - the monetary returns per unit of time spent are better.
 10.
Winner.
+1
 11.
People with a worldview that says "let's get in the pastor's daughter's knickers while pretending it's cool to be in church" are not going to be able to understand the faith of others because their own personality is so twisted.
You're right; that's pretty twisted.
 12.
I'm not doing any more giggling with the gear I have.
13. I don't need the great names in music playing alongside me, making me look and sound like an idiot. I can do that all by myself.
 14.
Current covers band does mainly indie stuff (arctic monkeys, kings of leon, killers etc) and we're looking for a song to add to the setlist that's very current. Something everyone knows and loves, but will be old in about 6 months so we'll drop it and find another "current" hit. The problem is that it's proving hard. Nothing that's charted recently seems to fit our style. Any ideas?
Born This Way - the indie version. Find a way to make it all your own. Also, don't listen to me, I know nothing.
 15. Well, I think you've got the basis of a stonking article right here:
We're just a local pub covers band - nothing exciting

we're all fat, bald guys in our 40s playing bloody Oasis and Kasabian covers to drunks.

If we get out alive it'll be a good night

I've given up.... my hearts not in it.
16.
If we were talking Bilbo's idea of mainstream then I'd like to play with John McLaughlin too. Or attempt to at least.
If we were talking Bilbo's idea of mainstream then I'd be tempted to swap Rolf for Eliza Carthy. Sorry Rolf.
 17. Invest in some serious hypnotherapy to convince yourself that it's not the double bass you're in love with, but the penny whistle.
 18.
Back Door. Ron Aspery, Tony Hicks, and the living legend that is Colin Hodgkinson. Doddy, tell me that the bass isn't a chordal instrument, in the right hands.
+100 - surprised Bilbo left these guys out!
 19.
bump What size venues do you think this is MORE than happy filling? M
Sorry - only just seen this! Very hard to say, because of all the possible variables, and because my own gigging experience is limited. I'd say for pub gigs you're unlikely to go over half way up on the master volume. I don't think I've ever had it more than half way up on the master volume (and our drummer was loud) , so I don't really know how loud it is flat out. You've always got the option of adding another cab if you want to, of course! Regards, E
 20.
As far as combos go, I can't recommend Markbass enough. Small and light but so so loud, and clear! If you get one of their combos that should be enough on its own, but you also have the option to add an extension cabinet at a later time too. There's a guy trying to shift one here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=markbass
and another here... 21. I just wanted to say what a great username Piggery Bandana is. I may have to type it again Piggery Bandana ahhh that's better.
 22.
In your case (if you like the Trace tone) i would go for a Markbass CMD121P. Big sound with lots of punch in a compact and light unit.
Like this one... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=125276
 23. Anyway, it should really be called CDO - with the letters in alphabetic order.
