I'll bring MB MicroMark and New York 604 cab for y'all to play with if I do though. And the 2009 US Jazz I've currently got up on the Marketplace... Look forward to putting some faces to names. Cheers, Al
 2. For sale; As the title says - 2009 US Standard Fender Jazz in 3-colour sunburst, tortoiseshell scratchplate, Rosewood fingerboard. In extremely good condition - one small dint to the front (it doesn't go through the finish to the wood, so is very inconspicuous) - otherwise pretty much "as new". I took this in exchange for my Pbass V from Old Horse Murphy - so you can trace it's pedigree back through other members of this site - believe he had it originally off someone else on here (not sure who tho'). It's a beautiful instrument, but I just acquired a lovley Aerodyne and the rule here is "one in, one out", so it has to go. So no px ing or trades - sorry. I'm looking for £625 + p&p (unless you can collect in person from York or the surrounding area, or if by lucky coincidence I happen to be heading your way in the near future..). Feel free to contact me with any queries of course. Cheers. NB When sold I'll be putting the original Fender chrome strap buttons back on it, rather than the black Schallers as seen in the pics above. It'll be strung with D'Addario Chromes (in a used but serviceable condition), unless you happen to prefer a set of La Bella custom light "Slappers".
 3.
PMs replied to. Some interesting offers but nothing that grabs me as yet. I could add some cash for the right bass
PM'd
 4.
Could I have a few more pictures please. The pictures you have posted make the bass look green. I thought Frost was more of a blue colour. A picture of the back would be great also. Thanks.
+1
 5.
Hi all, I've got one of these: Exactly as above but with MAPLE fingerboard, new style hard case, case candy and all the rest. Nice setup, sounds great and looks just beautiful. However, I'm kidding myself as I'm really a Jazz bass guy. So, looking to trade/part ex or SELL mine for an equivalent Jazz. Price for an outright sale is a very fair £750 exc postage, which reflects that it's literally in lovely condition, barely played and bang up to date in terms of spec. Actual photos of the real bass on their way. Thanks!
PM'd

Hope this counts as a legitimate use of this forum - I couldn't find anything saying it wasn't - I'm sure someone will let me know soon enough if it isn't... I have 2 tickets for the Fun Lovin Criminals gig in Leeds O2 Academy on Sunday 7th March which I now can't use. Don't want them to go to waste, and I'm not looking to make a profit from selling them - just looking to recover the face value (£17.50 each). I paid more of course, with scandalous "booking fees" etc, but I'll be happy if anyone will give me £35 for the pair. Anyone interested? PM me... Cheers, Al
Bump...

PM if interested. Dave, The one I've bought is from September 2007. Do they improvements you mention above date from after this time, and if so, what roughtly would be the price of an upgrade? Cheers, Martin
PM'd
 8.
It is fair to say that my compressor is better for live work then in the studio as it does add valve colour. There have been improvements with have helped with the noise issue. The writer of the review is also a "fan" and user of my overdrives.
OK - noted! Thanks.

 10.
I've not had this bass long and although it's a great bass, I don't think it's for me. My hands are only small and I like to play complex stuff which is a little difficult on this Precision neck. I'd also like something more versatile, like a Fender Jazz. So let's see what you've got. Alternatively, the bass is worth around £270 (the price I bought it at only a few weeks ago) and I'd possibly go part-ex if need be. Anyway, onto the bass. The body, pickups, hardware, etc. is from an original MIJ Fender Precision bass. The neck is from a 50's reissue P-bass and is absolutely gorgeous (I'm a sucker for maple fretboards). The bass sounds like a precision should and is not heavy, balances well and looks fantastic! I'm not 100% on this yet, hence this being a feeler.
Also PM'd

 12.
So, motorbike test is loooooooming (woohoo!), and I've got my Steinberger synapse, leads+tuner in neat little softcase that'll go on my back for travelling to gigs/lessons, but I'm going to need a little practice amp for rehearsals/small gigs that don't have their own amps provided. Any recommendations? I'm not too sure of how small I'll need...but the best proportion of smallness and loudness is goood *edit* including options like a little 2x10 or a 1x12 cab with a small-but-mighty amp perhaps?*/edit*
I suggest a MarkBass MiniMark. Bought one 18 months ago just for practice at home really, but I've since discovered the extent of its awesome capabilities. I regularly use it for smaller gigs (DI'd), and always for band practices (on it's own) with two loud guitarists, vox, keys (sometimes) and full drum kit. As long as it's sitting on the floor it gives the most amazingly loud, full sound. And I've mainly used it with 5 string basses too. Admittedly I need to turn the volume up to about the 3 o'clock position in these circumstances, but it has never distorted, clipped, overheated or otherwise complained. More than once I've played full rehearsals with bands with this set up, and it's only at the end of the session that someone will notice where all that sound has been coming from, and say something along the lines of "wow, I assumed you'd DI'd it to the PA or had it hooked up to that 4x10 cab over there!" I never have, of course. I also own a big, 500w MarkBass rig - but honestly don't need to use it most of the time. I'm not on commission for MB, but am beginning to think I should be!
 13. Dave, I've been considering buying one of your VT1 compressors for a while now - though I've never yet managed to get my hands on one to try out, I'm pretty convinced by what I've read and heard from others - and I like the idea of spending my money on something handmade by a guy I can contact openly on a forum too - it's reassuring! My one concern now is regarding the review on http://www.ovnilab.com/index.shtml - I'm no technical expert, just a musician - but the writer seems pretty clued up (well, he's convincing to me anyway). Just wondering whether you'd be willing to respond to the observations he makes - particularly regarding the "noisiness" of the pedal? Perhaps you have done so already elsewhere? I'm not attempting to stir up an online confrontation - honest! - I'm really just hoping to hear your point of view, and looking to be convinced to go ahead with the purchase in the absence of having been able to try one out myself. What I'm after is good quality compressor (I've tried some cheaper ones - Digitech, Ashdown etc - and found them a waste of time) that I'll probably use mainly as a limiter for slap, but which is flexible enough to be used as conventional compression too when required. I'm currently playing a Jazz bass (that may change, but I'm likely to stick with passive instruments) and use MarkBass amp and cabs. I'd be grateful for your advice/comments/reassurance... Thanks.

 17.
I have a Danelectro Longhorn Dead on 58,this came with roundwound strings,i have changed these for a set of Hofner flatwound that i use on my violin bass and they sound great! The only problem is the scale length as part of the actual speaking length of the string goes round the tuner post on the E & G strings.I know that LaBella make a set of flatwound for the Danelectro but seem to be a very light gauge.Any ideas? 500/bassman
I'm no expert, but I am interested in Danelectro Longhorns as I've been considering getting one. I believe their kind of intended to be strung with lighter gauge strings, which is probably why the La Bellas made for it are light. My limited experience of La Bellas is that they're usually excellent though, so I'd trust their judgement myself...
 18.
Thank youu to everyone that replied. (: Youu've been a great help, and I've decided to keep my fretted bass. In time I may get a fretless, but at the moment, I'm going to stay how I am as I don't want to take a chance that doesn't work out. Thank youu again (:
I've only noticed this thread just now - a bit late to contribute maybe - but I believe the great Les Claypool plays fretless, and some of his stuff is very heavy. It certainly doesn't lack edge anyway!
 19.
Shame the clip is no good - one of the loudest basses acoustically, and, although I never heard it in a gig setting, the pickup sounded fine in the shop. Is it worth trying Hobgoblin in Leeds?
Good plan. I'll drop in next time I'm passing. Thanks
 20.
Warmoth will do one: http://www.warmoth.com/Bass/Necks/StandardNecks.aspx $180 plus shipping and tax though. Dollar is still about 62p AFAIK Fantastic quality on their stuff, it's worth every penny Rosewood is considered a bit soft for fretless although i loved it on my old bitsa. Ebony and Pau Ferro are thought of as more suitable
Thanks very much for that. Anyone able to advise me about what the different tone characteristics of the various woods are generally thought to be then? What is it about Ebony and Pau Ferro that make it more suitable? And why is maple the cheapest option? Is it thought to be no good, or is it just a cheaper wood? I liked the brightness and aggression of the maple fingerboarded P-basses I tried - rosewood is generally thought to give a warmer, richer sound isn't it? I've almost no experience with fretlesses, but if I decide to go that way, I'd be looking for a sharp, edgy sound, with lots of clatter and growly "fret"buzz (what do you call fretbuzz on a fretless? Boardbuzz?), rather than anything too smooth, rich and mellow.
 21. Hello. Through an exchange I've just become the proud owner of a lovely new 2009 US Jazz bass. It seems great, but I've been considering going fretless for a while (hence my thread elsewhere in this section requesting advice...). And - I've always liked Maple fingerboards on P-basses, so am now wondering whether to a) change the neck on my new Jazz, or b) sell it and buy a Jazz (or P) with a maple neck... So - my question (betraying my lack of knowledge) is - Can you get necks with maple fretless fingerboards for either Jazz or Precision? I don't seem to see any around, but maybe I'm just not looking hard enough... Or maybe there's some good technical reason why fretless necks are best in Rosewood? As ever, I'd be most grateful for your advice... Thanks.
 22.
I'm now open to offers. PM me with yours! As per my thread in the general bass discussion forum I've decided to put my basses up in an ad and see what interest there is. This bass is a stock Fender US J-bass (minus the defret/epoxy job - done when I was in Hong Kong by the local pro music store). I carefully picked this one out of about 30 other basses for its tone, then had it defretted a few years later. It is a very smooth sound, nice balance of thick bass with open extended highs from the single coils. Specs are typical for that of a pre-S1 switching model. I think it was produced sometime between 2001 (when I think it was made as I checked the serial number once when I got it) and 2004 (when I actually bought it). I can double check if someone wants me too. Mint condition. This was my first real bass, but I just don't play it anymore. Comes with a hardcase too (albeit with an Apple sticker on the front). What do I want... I'm open to offers and trades. Trade wise I'm interested in guit*r gear, particularly amps. So if you got anything interesting please feel free to drop me a line. Cash price, I'd prefer 600 quid but I understand present economic conditions may mean a lower offer. That's ok! Try me! I can only say no (very politely!) Please also see my other bass for sale: (Geddy Lee 'Custom'). Feel free to PM. Mark
PM

Quite inspiring.... But I think I'm probably going to take the advice of buying a fretless neck for now, so I have the option if things don't work out... But thanks for posting. I might have a go at my cheap bass (Washburn XB).
 24.
Wild outsider, but what about an Ozark Resonator Bass - had one when I had my shop - everyone loved it as it was so unusual. It had a lipstick pickup and was very bright and metallic. Full brass body so very heavy - you wouldn't (possibly couldn't) play it standing up!!
I checked these out - there's a (not very good) clip on youtube of someone demonstrating one. And there's one for sale on ebay (or there was t'other day anyway). I'd be very interested if I could afford one in addition to buying something more conventional, but for now I'm only in a position to get one instrument. And I'm a bit put off by the thought of not being able to play it standing up! But I'd love to try one, so if anyone knows of one in the Leeds/North Yorkshire area I'd love to know... Thanks.
 25.
Fender bass VI or the Schecter Hellcat VI will all give you that Duane Eddy twang or counrty & western tic tak. They all use light gauge roundwounds on a short scale length, but are solid. Semi hollow & semi acoustic basses will sound more, eh, hollow and acoustic, but won't necessarily give you more 'twang'. Smaller speakers would help too - 10s, 12s - keep the 18" folded horn for reggae gigs. It helps to play with a pick too.
Thanks for that. Well I've certainly got the smaller speakers - MB 604 cab. Not sure the Fender VI looks quite right for me tho' - I'm just in the process of selling my Precision V in order to cut back down to 4 strings! Haven't checked out the Schechter yet - I'll have a look.
