What would you spend £150 if tarting up a sh*te bass..
Ancient Mariner replied to dougie's topic in Repairs and Technical
As the owner of one 'cheap and slightly grinning' bass, I have to say that pickups are a good replacement. Bought a set of Fender Geddy Lees through the classifieds here for a budget J type, and they really did make a big difference (there's no mud in my bass now!). -
And make sure you run it into the correct impedance cab. Valve amps are not like SS amps, that can cope happily with a range of impedances. They must only ever be run at the correct impedance (although you might get away with the wrong impedance for a while). Since the previous owner suggested it was producing about 65 watts, I wonder if one pair of power valves is not working? Even so, a 65 watt valve bass amp should be pretty loud.

Just when I've got my eye on the ex-Si bass. Shall resist.

I'm not sure why, but there's something about the simplicity of a tele that seems to make budget builders think they can get away with making them really badly. I bought a cheap one on the bay from 'Woody Customs' and it wasn't even worth the £40 I paid! Just terrible, and never capable of being good even after lots of work.
It may be easily fixed - had the same problem with my 77 precision from new. Wrote to Fender UK and got a setup guide. Slacken strings, slacken neck bolts, tap headstock to get correct string alignement on E & G . Retighten neck bolts, tune and way to go. Sorted mine out prefectly. It is surprising how much lateral movement is available in the neck pocket.
This is the way to deal with it unless your bass has a set/through neck. It requires very little movement at the headstock (and a correspondingly tiny amount of movement in the pocket) to make the strings lie too close to the edge of the neck. In any case, with bolt-neck instruments you should always ensure that the neck is firmly seated at the end of the pocket by gently backing off the neck screws a little at a time until it settles all the way down, then re-align and re-tighten. I'm sure that most of the stories of poor sustain and resonance in bolt-neck instruments come from a failure to seat the neck properly.
any idea what the body is made from. I am on an alternate mission - how cheap can you go and still souind reasonable (I wont't claim as far as good) or what can you gig with and not worry about having it thieved, damaged etc.
I can't find anything definitive on the web for it. Tomorrow if I have time I'll pull the neck off and check whether it's solid or ply. Tonewise it's not bad - does sound precision like, though the pickup is a little woolly.

A standard P type Encore I picked up around used Christmas 2009 to start playing bass on. Since then I've set it up and done a fret level & it plays really nicely now. It's in good nick - there might be the odd minor ding/mark but it's certainly not beaten up or knocked around. I'll even chuck in a spare pack of strings. Now with free postage to Mainland UK. I'm not going to drop it to a silly price - this plays too well to just be dumped Why am I selling it? I'd love to get that SX P-Type Wayne PD is selling that used to belong to Si, and I just need to free up funds & space in the stable.
