There is a madman just waiting for the opportune moment. When that moment arrives, BAM.
If this man punches as quickly as he plays his sixteenths - there is gonna be a bloodbath!
 3.
Only one I can pull off the top of my head, don't know how well he'd stand up to JJ though...
So now we have the Punk versus the Stadium rocker. But wait! It turns out Lemmy wasn't down and out, he'd just dropped his Zippo lighter! He's pulled out his Ace of Spades and is fighting back with his Iron Fist! This is turning into a rumble - anything and anybody goes!!!

 5. Roll up, Roll up! Welcome to Basschat's Saturday Night Prize Fight! The rules are simple : - your contender must be a bass player - he or she may be alive today or can fight from the grave - the last one standing wins - EDIT: and fights the next contender! We're not talking about who's got the greatest technique or the fancy chops or a 'tone to die for' here, we wanna know who'd win in a fight! So, who's the hardest, lowdown mofo of them all then? Let us bring on the reigning Champion - He's big, he's mean, he rides a Silver Machine. Representing the Heavy Metal corner - iiiiiiiiit's LEMMY!!! This guy will K.O. you with his Jack Daniels breath and then bite the head off your bass! Well, who could take Lemmy out then? Pics would be great, let's see who were up against!
 6.
At the moment we have topics about getting rid of slugs, soundproofing a garage, redundancy, pizza recipes and getting a Volvo MOT'd... Doesn't matter what you need to know, someone here will have the answer...
ok, thanks. Firstly, this is the bass in question, an '81 G&L L1000. Of course, this bass was originally sold as a passive only option, but I am very interested in exploring the options to upgrade the active circuit already installed (as mentioned above). My reasoning being that the original tone circuit parts are long gone, so why not? I'd prefer to have an active/passive switching option also, much like on the L2000 bass, but want to keep the original 3-way coil switch. I've also got to consider the lack of space in the control cavity as well. One possible option that really interests me is the John East P-Retro Now, I realise this is designed for a Precision bass, but given the similarity of the control, cavity and jack positions, I thought this may be feasible. I'd have to have the 2 stacked knobs rearmost near the jack output and have the existing front volume knob as a dummy, any thoughts? I've read some very favourable comments (on Basschat) and reviews of this preamp Andrew McKinney and heard some nice demo's and it seems to tick all the boxes. My only concern is with the G&L MFD pickup, which I believe is quite a high output, resulting in the L2000 active circuit tone controls being 'cut only' (or so I have read). With the P-Retro being 'boost only', in active mode, I wonder if this could be a problem? Would I be better off looking into boost/cut preamps instead? Is there anything I may have overlooked? If anyone can help or enlighten me, or indeed offer other preamp recommendations suitable to my needs, I'd be grateful. Dave. Ps. thanks 'Dood', I see you have replied as I type this.
 7.
Just out of interest, do those two op-amps say 4558 on the top? I can't quite see. If they are, they are a generic op-amps - ( a pair of 741's in a package for all the geeky types) So my guess is that it's a fairly old preamp - because there have been a lot of advances in both performance and power consumption since they came out. The same Op amps appear in an old combo I have which is well over ten years old, as a guide.
Yes they do! (MC?) 4558 (C?) / KOREA / 5A - the print is very small, but I can clearly make out the numbers, the letters less so.
It is possible to upgrade the chips - as iCastle has pointed out they will pop out and with a bit of investigation I'm sure it'd be easy to find out what the latest incarnation of a quality pre op-amp is. I recall names such as TL072, LF353N, OPA2xx, NE553x, LT1358(?) from waaaay back - most will just slot straight in - but it'd be hard to make a 100% definite choice without seeing knowing the schematic - though my major hunch looking at the lack of stuff on the board is that it's probably a gain stage and baxandall bass treble network - a very obvious method and used a great deal in active circuits. Given what we can see, if you decided to upgrade to an up to date preamp I am positive you will notice a big difference in Bass sound.
Wow, I must admit that most of your information has gone straight over my head but I thank you anyway. You obviously know your stuff and I value your opinion, so, I'm willing to throw a good wedge at a new preamp and would like some help narrowing down my choices. I've done a fair bit of research and have some questions if anyone could help please, is this the right place to ask?
 8. I recently bought some Pyramid 'Bronze Wires' .040 .060 .080 .100 for my acoustic resonator. They sounded good until tuning up the E one day and the outer winding touched the post and 'ping!' At £25 a set (inc. postage from thomann's) I wasn't amused.
 9. Great, thanks for your informative help. Hopefully, it may look familiar to someone else, who's seen something similar looking. Cheers, Dave.
 10. Thanks for your quick response. I don't know much about active preamps. Potting - is that the black coating? Op-amps - are they the chips? Is there anywhere I can learn a bit more about this subject please? From what you say, does the quality 'look' any good? (I know this is a silly question really!) I suppose I was thinking about maybe changing it, but I guess I should find out what it is first.
 11. The following 2 band active eq was fitted in my G&L L1000 passive bass when I bought it. It still has the original volume pot, switch and jack. There is no brand name printed anywhere, the only information I can offer is that it has 'korea' on the chips and '50k Mexico' on the pots. (I can add serial numbers if helpful). I'd love to know what brand or even model it is and have searched for similar looking pics but had no luck, do either the board or pots look familiar to anyone? Thanks. (Edit: topic description)
 12.
Great player, but the one thing that puts me off MASSIVELY about her is the way she wears her bass. The height/position would be fine if it didn't remind me of the more frequent sight of middle-aged male bass players who rest their moob on their bass, like a bass bra! *cringes*
Really??? I don't believe I've ever seen a better use for the 'comfort body contour' on a Jazz style bass than this - It's what Leo would have wanted.
 13. Happy 100th Birthday indeed! Here is a well written piece online, for those who wish to know more about his life and work - Robert Johnson, his life, his music, his legacy. Here is a great Robert Johnson cover version ...
 14.
Hey, no fair, she's mine!!!!!!! Yes, that'll be Tal for me as well and having met her pics don't do her justice either.
Don't be greedy, you've had your hour.
 15.
I like to think of G&L as more like Leo saying "Well if CBS/Fender aren't going to fix it... I will".
Love it!
 16. I'm sure I once read that Paul McCartney uses clear nail varnish on his plucking thumbnail to strengthen it. I personally keep mine short. But, I was recently toying with the idea of using guitarist's fingerpicks to play my acoustic resonator bass. While I was researching the different types online, I happened upon an acoustic guitar forum, where there was a serious debate about what type of nail treatments to use, nail varnish vs. acrylic false nails, what glues to use to stick them, even the merits of certain nailbars/beauty salons.
 17.
... and all this stuff about pre-BBE is, for the most part, misleading guff aimed at creating a pre-CBS style panache by sellers of nearly but not quite examples. In many cases there is no difference between pre-BBEs and post-BBEs - especially as George Fullerton was still on the payroll keeping an eye on QC. I personally view the evolution from simple headstock to the "eye-gouger" one (circa '82) as a marker of the only major landmark in G&L bass evolution.
What??? I seriously can't see how you could not acknowledge the 30th anniversary model as a major leap forward in design - it has "white pearl position markers and pearl frost pickup covers" for gawds sake!!! Joking aside, what you say is too true, but it just goes to show how all of Leo's main designs from Fender, Musicman and G&L were fundamentally right from the beginning. If it ain't broke ...
 18.
Was browsing the for sale and saw there's two mid 80's L2000's - which got me thinking, is there any discernable difference in the sound of these to their later mid 90's US counterparts, or indeed to something like the Tributes?
Wow, can opened, worms everywhere! I'll start by saying that I'm certainly no expert and I can't offer you any real-world experience of either Leo era or BBE era L2000's as I've never owned either. But, before and since buying my '81 L1000, I have trawled through many of the 'other' bass sites and can pass on some info I've picked up along the way. Although fundamentally the same design since it's conception, these are just some of the manufacturing differences from 1981 to the present day ...* Body woods: trib - basswood/swamp ash, USA - alder/swamp ash, some of the Leo era bodies were also maple or mahogany. Nitrocellulose lacquer to polyester finish '81-'82. Necks: various profiles/widths, semi-gloss to satin finish '92, plus a change from 3 bolt to 6 bolt mid '90's. Differences in cavity shielding and grounding. Pickups: windings vary Electronics: preamp board and circuit changes over the years, chipsets, capacitors, versions (leo, 1.0, 1.1) blah, blah blah .... There is a wealth of information and opinion out there if you're that way inclined, some of it conflicting. The level of detail (geek-ery) the Americans go to is overwhelming. I've even read that aligning the slothead pole pieces in my '81's adjustable MFD pickup, so they are parallel with the strings will affect the tone
so would a pre BBE, mid 80's, be discernably, a LOT different?
I suppose it depends on your viewpoint, on any of the above, as to what extent they affect the sound/tone of an instrument. "a LOT different?" - at home maybe, but in a live or even recorded context, doubtful. *disclaimer - some or all of the above information may be incorrect - take it up with the Americans.
 19.
I thought that was the legend that is Mo Foster.
you're right, I stand corrected.
 20.
Aluminium is a well known tone 'wood'.
True. It's been used in resonator guitars since the 1920's. Here's my resonator bass, a nickel plated steel body with an aluminium cone... Also, Kramer used to make an aluminium necked bass, which I believe was played by Derek Baxter on the 'Minder' tv theme ...
 21. I've always disliked ostentatious basses. but, I can't stop looking at the vulgar beauty of the Lowenherz ... What's not to like about a 'Golden Lionhead-Sustain-Stringholder'!!! Edit: and somehow, I really hope that gold knob adjusts the 'Lioness'.
 22. My Analogue Solutions 'Red Square' analogue synth and 'Oberkorn' analogue sequencer - because sometimes I wanna make some bass and I don't feel like pluckin' no strings or playin' no keys or programmin' no sh1t.
 23. To bubinga5, I always love the music you post on here, these are for you... Just remember, once Soul and the Funk is in your blood, you can hide, but it will always find you in the end.
 24. Inspired by the recent thread about Victor Wooten 'losing' his bass before a gig and borrowing a fans instead, Here, I got to thinking ... - If you were in the situation where an artist you admire, borrowed and played your bass, at a gig where you had prime, front row seats ... Who would it be? What tune would they play? Which bass would you lend them? Anything goes, it could be Jaco playing the 'Benny Hill Theme' on a Sue Ryder if you wish. Mine - Player: Jean-Jacques Burnel Tune: Peaches (simply genius, and because it's the reason i first bought a bass and the first riff I learnt) Bass: G&L L1000 (because I 'ain't got a Precision)
