1. I'll play anything except pub trad. Ya know that "ooohh ahhh up the ra sh*te". I try to ply with as many musicians as possible. There is always something to learn.
2. <<<<<< Thats me tuning up mid set. Not stoner/sludge dress code, but then again either is this Dont go for the image is important sh*te.
3. Result! Ban the other two from the gigs! LOL
4.
... and asking to try a £3k PRS. "Oh, ho!" they thought. "We got ourselves one of those millionaire bankers here, of which one reads in the popular tabloids! It's payday!" IME, the only way to improve on this scenario is to visit around mid-afternoon, reeking of fine wine and babbling about "clinching the Hamburg deal".
As opposed to popping in around 5.45pm reeking of Hamburgers and waffling on about grabbing a bottle of Tescos finest????? Maybe thats what I've been doing wrong all along! Worst service ever has to be Musicmaker in Dublin.
5. Cool, good luck with that. Wish there was something similar over here. I'm/was grade 6 classical guitar before I did my back in. 2 more grades and its easy money. All the metal heads I know want to learn classical stuff thinkin it'll make em sound like Yngwie!
6. Yep, get that guy back on vocals if ye can. Oh yea, when ye audition another guitarist dump him if he insists on being labeled "lead guitar". Lead guitar is 99% rhythm anyways.
7. I'm not a MM fan at all but the Bongo a mate has blew me away.Superb in terms of tonal options and playability. Construction is top notch also. Ticks all the right boxes really.
8. Gigged on Saturday night, was bloody ragin by the time we home. Story: A band from the same town as us is on a bit of a tour at the moment with the same band supporting them at each gig. Two weeks ago the support band pulled out of this particular show and the guys asked us to step in as cover. We said sure we'll step in and help them out. Everything was arranged at least a week before the show, all we had to bring was cymbals, a guitar head and cab. With the extra room to spare we thought we'd give some of they're mates a lift to the gig. "Cool, nice one lads!" they said. So anyways, Saturday evening rolls around and we hit the road. We were about an hour and half into the journey, maybe 20ish km from the venue when we got the phone call from the main act. " Ahhhh......howya.....ahh..listen, theres a bit of a problem.......we cant play the gig tonight..... something came up......sorry lads" The little feckers left it until we were on the road to tell us that! Did the show, sounded muck, Hiwatt B150 or whatever they're called. The new set we were going to run through for a pretty important gig next Sunday went out the window and we were over an hour later leaving the venue than we had planned.(I had to get home for a wedding reception) I suppose the next one cant be as bad!!???????
9. The guy in Alien Ant Farm has one of the sweetest tones I've come across in ages. Dan Maines from Clutch also has a great sound. Funnily enough I'm trying to nail down a stoner type tone myself at the mo. Problem is theres just one guitarist in the band and keeping the lowend full is tricky.
10. Probably too close to the amp. I use a Boss power Driver for a Geezer type tone with no feedback so that fact that its a guitar pedal shouldn't matter. If its before the zoom in the chain the multi may be boosting the signal, try it after the zoom.
11. I gig with a lot of bands who use the same tuning. The best way to get heard in that situation , IMO, is to have as much punch as possible. This will have to be a combination of serious eq work and most importantly proper string tension. If you are tuning down a standard set, they'll sound floppy and despite what colouration you add to the signal, your tone will suffer. I've also found that too much volume coming off stage at low frequencies is nothing short of tedious. FOH should be able to clean up the signal and send it out a well defined sound. If I was in your situation I'd get the guitards to drop a cab each. Its total overkill. If they want to run the two cabs, switch the heads to 50 watts. Unless ye're are playing in very large venues full stacks are pointless. Eg, when Dream Theater played in Vicar street a few years back J.P used 3 Mesa Heads into a 4x12. J.M used a single 4x10. Plenty loud!!
12. Not really, unless you want to be totally overcharged and spoken to as if you are a dim witted idiot. Sadly X-Music is the best there is in the country.
13. No two ways about it. Line up a replacment and get rid of him.
14.
You don't count being on fire as a problem?
pots will get scratchy over time. unavoidable
15. your drummer is a session player with 15 years experience?? ya think he'd have some idea of dynamics. you should be pushing enough air with your current set up. try tweaking thr eq.
16.
am really! i think its tiny little slip ups? nothing thats really bad! ive seen him twice and he was on the money! andy
Yes really. Not a patch on Newstead IMO. There might be a few clips of the Dublin gig a few years back when they did the Master 20th aniversary thingy on the goo tube.
17.
but that's not a bass. no disrespect, but listen again, Sienfeld "bass"is a synth...well by that I mean a sample played on keyboard. Im not a betting man but on this occasion £10er says..... ATB W
Yep that much I know. Was using it as an example of what is probably still considered the slap tone by most. We talkin £ or € for that tenner??? Jumping in on the slap tone debate: 1 Stu Hamm (on outbound) 2 Phillip Bynoe 3 Timmie C 4 Flea 5 Marcus Miller
18. I'd wager more of an 80's type thing, ala Seinfeld.
19. First thing I do is check the around neck pocket. Then the strap buttons get a good ol yank. Then I check the body for signs of a cover up job. More or less it.
20. Played one of these a good few times. Superb bass. For some reason I thought they were made in the North.
21.
yeah it is one of the few forums where you get given fact and opinion rather than opinion passed off as fact. Also people actually try to have reasonable discussions rather than just telling people they are wrong
NO ITS NOT. Its not like that around here at all. I know this because a bass playing pygmy elephant called Rodney told me so and in my opinion he's being factual, so there! End of discission. Oh yea, and what Warwickhunt said.
22. I'd still change the nut. Its grooved for a standard E string guage. Sooner or later its gonna crack from a B string guage. Ya dont want that happening mid show.
23. Dont think you'll get the modern slap tone with that set up. I presume you are trying for that Phillip Bynoe sound. Active pups to boost the lows and highs really help. What T.E. preamp is it?
24.
de tuned to c# on the bottom string yes. also i dont know how softly you guys are playing but to stop any clicking i need to play verry very softly.
You're not going to solve it unless you change string gauge and put in a new nut. Get a 5 string if you need to be that low!
25. Its more than likely the strings hitting the end of the fingerboard. If it was the pups it would be more of a popping noise. I get all the time but I like it. If you dont want to change the action you'll have to alter your finger attack.
