1. I've always been an "Ashdown is wooly and horrible" person but I did a gig earlier this year where the headline band's bassist was using an ABM 2x10 combo and P-bass. F**k me did it sound good. If I was in the market for a new amp I wouldn't dismiss them quite as quickly as I have done in the past, certainly. But I'm not, I love my V-Types too much
 2. 2 preamp tubes (12AX7s) and 4 power tubes (KT88s I think?) The 2 preamp tubes are situated behing the gain control (roughly) if the board layout is the same as in my combos.
 3. This is the older V-Type head, single channel, isn't it? (Spoken to you about it on TB!) What bass do you have? Do you plug into the passive input? I get loads of grit from my V-Types (same preamp) by plugigng active basses into the passive input. Otherwise a pedal is the best way to go Mert
 4. Terrible news, he was awesome
 5. Played my first jazz gig for over a year, was fun as some of the tunes I swear I've NEVER played. We weren't the tightest band on some of the endings, some of my improv was crap but generally I think I pulled it off OK. Bit off-putting having a saxophonist in the band who is a far better bassist than me, having a singer who was the former bassist and having at least one bassist watching in the audience. In my "normal" gigs no problem, but jazz really isn't my forte IMO Pic: This was also the first gig I've done with the 4x8 combo - it's only ever had rehearsal use up to now. It sounded AWESOME
 6.
I use the tone generator on WinISD Pro, a laptop and a bass amp. 10Hz overnight so the speaker is running beyond 50% of Xmax seems to do a nice job (and you can even do that with it loaded in the cab because it's so far below the tuning frequency you get decent phase cancellation). Alex
Another cunning and obvious answer I should have known! Brain clearly wasn't in gear this morning. Cheers
 7.
I think remember hearing this through doods Epifani Epifani UL-610 at the Bash.. that was pretty scary stuff.
Certainly was! Sounded hoooooooooooge
I know what you mean about the band soc committee stuff many people are really suspicious of the whole thing!
Everyone who isn't in the committee is suspect of the committee. I was on the committee for 3 years and got all sorts of abuse on the bandsoc forum for perceived favouritism which was never there except for in everyone's heads!! Goodricke has changed since I was there, there's that posh new building instead of the old knackered food hall we had...

 11.
is there really no interest in this bass? I'd quite like to get rid of it!
I'd love it but I have no money and the good lady would kill me!!
IMHO I'd put a price on it so that people have an idea of what you want for it; I for one am not keen on blind offers and prefer to have an idea of what someone wants
Aye, plus the one
 12.
Why not stick a CD/MP3 player through your amp/cab... failing that sit and noodle away or book in some rehearsal time. I don't think it's such an issue these days to break a speaker in, though the tone will change a bit as it settles, so I'd just play it

I asked Jorg Shroeder the same thing when my new cab arrived, as I had a gig that night. He said 'Just play it'.
Fair play - noodling option is always good:)
I believe some of the Design Programs have tone generators on them, so just take a line from your PC too your amp then through your speaker. Im sure google will throw up a few results for online tone generators also Edit, Here we are
Good point. I could just use Audacity's tone generator! Maybe's I'll just not bother. I didn't bother with my 4x8 combo when i replaced the speakers and that is fine. Just that this cab is to match my 1x15 combo exactly so if i have a more "broken in" speaker it'll be closer to begin with
Yep woodstock still happens, got rained on this year though. Took part in the battle of the bands though got to the final, which i heard was rare for a first year band. Theres some vids on the ystv website, the band is girl of prey...the vid kinda explains why we didn't get any place (lead singer likes to rant is all i'm saying!).
I think in my 4 years there it didn't rain once, must've been very lucky!! Will go check out the BoB videos - nice one for getting to the final! I only entered in my 2nd 3rd and 4th years - semi final, runner up, third place. When we were runner up we lost on a technicality of the whole band being the main people on the BoB committee so it would've looked mighty odd had we won... Is it still held in Langwith or have they sorted somewhere better for it?
 14. I have a new 15" driver for a bass cab I'm building and I would like to break the speaker in properly before loading it in. However, I have no signal generator or anything particularly sensible like that. What suggestions do you fine folk have for easy speaker break-in methods?
 15.
Yeh, we've had this point before. I think we're talking about academic study of music theory, rather than what you have gleaned from playing your instrument.
We have indeed! I'm tired after a day at work and my brain forgot! Ho hum. There was a point I was trying to get to but I'm f**ked if I can remember it now!!
 16.
I am in no way denying that there are benefits to knowing music theory (communication between musicians, creating commercial music etc) but I really do not see any benefit to composing that this knowledge can bring.
Even if one didn't know "classical" music theory, when composing he/she would know what sounds a two-frets-up, one-string-up position change would make. In its very basic form, that is utilising their level of music theory to construct a shift of a perfect 5th for their composition.
 17. Awful! How long before Warwick put a stop to Russtone making this (as they did with Status)???
 18.
I was trying to be a smart arse. My limited understanding of suspended chords is that they're chords over which you shouldn't play the 3rd. If you think (from memory) that both the minor and major 3rds sounded crap, then it sounds like you were right and maybe theory would have some kind of explanation to back you up.
Furry muff I see where you're coming from, just didn't spot it before!!
 19.
I think that's what Alex was saying as well. I know he has a certain way of expressing himself once you rub him up the wrong way (as do I), but he's generally a live and let live type of guy.
Yip
 20.
A suspended chord?
To be honest the example I gave was 3 years ago and I'm buggered if I can remember the ins and outs of the rest of the harmony in the song. This particular riff occurred in the outro where (IMHO) a more simple root note pattern would've driven the song forward a lot better without any harmonic mess incurred by maj/min 3rds, suspensions or anything else.
 21.
The 3rd what?
The third coming of Godzilla
Sheesh. Why do these discussions always turn into a "you have no soul" v. "you have no brain" clash of un-civilizations? I think most people here are of the opinion that whatever works for you is the right way. In my band, we have two self-taught guys (me and the guitarist) and two schooled-from-a-young-age classically-and-jazz-trained guys (keyboard player and drummer). Being in this band has challenged a lot of our preconceptions: schooled guys can have the best feel and groove and most soulful playing in town, and self-taught guys can know what they're talking about when it comes to harmony and rhythm. The guitarist and I both taught ourselves bits of theory along the way and are still absorbing new bits every day. The difference between us and the other two is that they learnt it from a teacher whereas we had to go find it from other musicians/books/articles/websites.
I think that's the point a few of us are trying to get across, some more eloquently (you) than others (me) and some are perhaps misunderstanding each other!
 22.
You could consider he was playing the tri-tone of the relative minor.
But it still sounded crap Like I said, both the major and minor thirds sounded crap at that point so ultimately his lack of knowledge vs that of the rest of the band both would have come up with solutions which sounded crap. My solution would've been to avoid the 3rd of any colour/description/type all together. And it may still have sounded crap!
 23.
I'm sorry, if he can't hear that it sounds "wrong" then he's f***ed and will only be an instrument operator, not a musician. Theory in this case may help him be a better operator.
hehe, good point!
