I’ve picked up a secondhand Ashdown Klyston 115 400w 8 ohm ported bass cab from a nice local guy. it’s the one with the tall cab and lower grille port and England flag logo so built in U.K. some years back. Not sure what speaker but perhaps Eminence ? Has a switchable horn .. Ok question what would I run with this as a second cab ? Naturally they don’t make them anymore If it works out I will be letting go my two near new Pro Neo 210H cabs that I purchased direct from Ashdown earlier this year. This old cab is heavy and larger but that isn’t a problem for me in transport or lifting terms What do you other Ashdown users think ? Also I want to stick to Ashdown as a brand 👍 Also it’s not a question of impedance as I’m aware of the ability to run two 8ohm cabs

We probably all know it but how many ignore it when tweeking our amp playing live because it doesn’t appear to sound right. Same applies to volume on stage and the battles that happen. I guess we have all been guilty of expecting that tone we have in our heads to sound great at home, in the studio or live performance. All very different tones needed to work for the occasion. I for one was doubting my cabs and believing they should sound deeper when standing close by or maybe 10ft away yet further away they sound very full and deep. The wonders of sound waves !

Wireless options. Picky shopper content lol

I’m looking at the Line6 G30 and for £129 @ PMT it’s a bargain Would use a Levy’s pouch with mine too They have issues if heavy handed but they do seem to be favoured by many gigging players -
Ashdown RM series or Orange Little Bass Thing both superb

After a very helpful chat with Ashdown I’ve learnt something that all bass players should know. The tone sitting / standing in front of your amp / cab doesn’t sound the same 15-20 ft away. The bass sounds fuller and deeper as you move away from the cab which setting up for band use is important as setting it too bass heavy near to amp may initially sound great close up but further away it’s all flub ! Im going over to wireless completely to benefit from this and hear the sound “ correctly” out front Line 6 G30 incoming plus Levy’s belt / strap pouch 👍

Orange Little Bass Thing 👍 Or Ashdown RM500 / RM800

This seems to be the answer Lozz What we think sounds good on our own sounds very wrong in a band situation Its a bit like Smiley Face EQ at home sounds great but lost in a band Sad face EQ sounds very middy and not nice at home but fits well in a band So many of us have probably sold gear based on this and perhaps needn’t of done do 😳😂

It was mostly to do with cab design, number of speakers and EQ and how we perceive it standing in front of the cab. so there is no need to consider 1x15 cabs and I need to sound check standing further away to really hear the bass and not judge it by what I hear standing in front of it ! ive been guilty of setting it up at home and finding a great tone but in the band it sounds like its lacking something. So I’m happy the cabs will do what I need but I need to look at my bass amp EQ settings that may sound wrong in isolation but perfect when playing in a band. Hard getting this right especially as you cannot play very loud at home.

Well after chatting with Ashdown and taking some great advice I’m hanging on to the cabs ! Superb service from Ashdown and very helpful

Mine is whisper quiet on my RM800 EVO 2 One of the quietest amps I’ve owned

Ok I’ve sorted it I think Ok I’ve set up my compressor as always ON Next added the SVT amp sim and turned off the speaker sim, turned ultra low and high off, gain down to around 35 and level set around 35 Mids boosted slightly Now I get a volume lift, a mids boost and a touch of grind to fill out the sound. I leave the patch on SVT so I can use the footswitch when I need the boost. This is a great little pedal for numerous applications and a decent tuner too !

I’ve been trying out the Zoom MS-60B after hearing on here good reports Using a compressor only at this stage to use instead of the Ashdown onboard one. What I now need is something in the MS-60B that can be turned on for a slight bass lift during guitar solos etc Ive tried the Drives but I don’t care for them ( not a great overdrive on bass lover ) Any ideas please to make the bass come up in the mix a bit more ? I did think maybe a mid boost using the MS60 EQ options I’m running the compressor always on

Mostly vertical stacked but last night was only using one cab
-
Well it might of been “tired ears syndrome” from last nights rehearsals Just played it and I think the 210 cab has plenty of low end it’s just getting the right EQ to match the bass, pick playing and band sound. Dilemma over for now I think !
-
Yep they are sealed cabs I did wonder if the Compact Ported would give better low end ommph

I might ?? Be letting my ABM210H EVO IV Pro Neo cabs go ?
-
I’ve decided to look at some 115 cabs but not the smaller ones ideally rated to 400w RMS 8 ohms I have the two ABM210H EVO IV Pro Neo cabs which are still fairly new with covers but I’m looking for something different I recall Ashdown did the older ABM Klyston Neo 115 cab ( ported ) rated 400w and about 29” tall That’s the kind of cab I’m considering and adding a second 115 Just need a bit more low end I feel to fill out the rock trio band ( PBass with Pick ) Thoughts ? Other suggestions? This is without PA support Also I will need them fairly quickly!!
-
Yep I agree they are a fine amp I’m still finding new sounds with mine and they all sound good
-
Have you noticed fret wear using Prosteels ??
-
I think mine is 2.5mm to 3mm approx at 17th fret on low E string and 2.5mm on G string I play mine tuned to Eb standard
-
Just checked online and they sure are pricey ! May try a set of Elixir Nickel as my next set and see how much longer they appear to last
-
I tried Elixirs some years back and found the coating started to wear and I still lost the zingy tone after about two months tops ! Any recommendations for Elixir for 40-105 long scale Roundwounds running in Eb tuning ?
-
Just put a set of Dunlop Super Bright nickel roundwounds on my PBass and it’s funny how you forget that great zingy tone that slowly dies off after playing. Also trying Prosteels ( stainless) on my Yamaha to see how they last or eat frets. Both now very zingy and clear bottom end when played fingers. No need for pick to get that clarity now If only you could have this consistent tone from a set of strings more than a few weeks !

My RM800 is totally silent when fan running. My old ABM600 had a louder fan for sure
