  1. Hi all, I'm been making a body to fit a lovely neck I have spare, and I've got it all carved and playing nicely - just the electronics to go! I fancy a passive stingray setup, as it's a bit different. Also, I played a passive shortscale MM Stingray recently, and the sound was great!! If I could have help with two questions, that would be much appreciated. 1. When looking for pickups, should I be looking at their output to determine whether they'd be good humbuckers for a passive setup? I have read that many humbuckers sound anaemic wothout a preamp, so how do I determine which ones will give a tone similar to the passive MM Stingray? 2. I am a novice when it comes to electronics! I do have a push/pull series/parallel Jazz bass loom that has worked nicely on a jazz in the past. I suppose I can't just wire up each of the coils in a humbucker to this loom as a series/parallel switching option? Sorry if these are obvious questions - like I said, electronics are not something I'm familiar with. Jack
  2. This was my first ever pedal, apart from a tuner! It's a great d.i. I wish the treble knob was a little more useful, though? Have just got a spark, too, from a guitarist friend. I think that is a great sounding overdrive. Really couldn't believe how natural and warm it sounded, let alone for something so cheap!
  3. Similar to me- lucky to land on a lovely bass at 16- didn't get another untill I was 31!! Discovering Basschat (and particularly the classifieds) has not helped with a new and growing sense of GAS, mind... 😬
  4. My favourite bass! The colour is almost pastel in person.
  5. I like HOAXX - good name for a covers band! I know how you feel with the drunken deciding of names- I played in a band for years as a uni student called Moist...
  6. Our funk and soul functions band: The Enrichments The Indy project I'm playing for: Mighty One A new Funk/Soul/Pop originals project: TBD.... any suggestions welcome- please help!
  7. There is something about tort pickguards!
  8. Lovely! Does the black one have a smaller body, or is it a shorter scale or something?
  9. Well, that is beautiful!
  10. Wow, a few of these lists make me realise just how modest mine is!! I've never owned more than 2 at a time... Unbranded starter bass. Godin (for the next 16 years) Fender (lasted a grand total 1 year) Tokai
  11. Lovely bass! I'm definitely shortscale curious! What width is the nut, and what sort of profile is the neck, if you don't mind me asking?
  12. The 62s were fairly local on Ebay and FB Marketplace. There are a load at Fender Fever, which is in London, too. That's interesting about the pickups - it does tally with what I've experienced so far with gigging and at home. It is sort of smoother in that there is possibly a little less clank than some of the Fender Ps I tried, but like you say, there is more punch there, to my un-expert ears at least! And wow - that live album is great. Really like Herbie Hancock, but haven't listened to much live Headhunters/Thrust stuff at all. Great recommendation - thanks! Another thing - I've noticed my EBS Octaver tracks it really very well - no glitching on the D and G strings beneath the 5th fret, and follows the E string down to a low Ab. Not sure if that's to do with the bass, or the pedal, though.
  13. Nice! What is the actual pedalboard you're using?
  14. That's great! Rose Morris is such a great shop. I really did like some of the Japanese pb62s that we tried, too. I've had a chance to gig with it a couple of times now, and take it to a few practices, and it really is lovely in those settings. Nice and punchy - lives up to its name. What is the difference between Alcino 2 and Alcno 5? My knowledge of different p pickups is not great.
  15. Only posting now, as I've only just recovered, but we had great fun on New Year's Eve. It was the first time I've played my new Tokai Hardpuncher live, and I loved it! I was allowed a turn on sax, too, which is a rare event (probably for good reason...) Our band is called The Enrichments. Happy New Year everyone! Signed Sealed Delivered.mp4 Hold On.mp4
  16. Never posted any videos here, but here's a couple of clips from NYE. Includes the first time I've played my new Tokai live, and a rare outing on sax during Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher! Our band is called The Enrichments. https://www.instagram.com/enrichmentsband/ (apologies if we're not supposed to post links to social media!) Signed Sealed Delivered.mp4 Lifting Me Higher.mp4
  17. If I had to pick 6 types of pedals to use live, these would be them!
  18. I'm not really an effects player, but this is the board I'm using for our funk, soul and r'n'b covers band's NYE gig. Usually go without the envelope filter, but it's fun to use now and again on the odd fill! Banged the board together last year out of a bit of cast-off timber from a DIY project. I'm compressor curious, and have been for years, but definitely don't need one. It's just there's space for one...
  19. Hi mate- I personally wouldn't use chorus for that, but I believe some players do. Another poster mentioned chorus eating away the low frequencies; for 60ish quid, you can get a new EHX Bass Clone, which has a switch to leave the bottom end alone. I was using one for an indy band recently- playing around at home on low settings, I think it definitely rounds and softens the front of the note, without being too effecty (I think thats what you mean?), whilst thickening up the sound. You could also get the Spectracomp for not much, and it'll be similar to your old amp's compressor. I love an octaver, but really for for synthy lines- I think it could muddy up your sound real quick if on all the time, even on low settings. Especially playing live. I'm not an fx expert, I should add! A Tuner, Spectracomp and Bass Clone would be a cool little board, though.
  20. That's interesting- I just measured mine and it is 23mm at the first fret. Definitely feels more chunky than other Ps I have played. Do you think they just get unfinished necks from wherever they have surplus at the time? The neck itself definitely feels solid, though.
  21. Yeah, it wasn't xheap. £1,050.
  22. I had no idea they were being used by Fender so recently. Good to know!
  23. Not sure exactly, but it was a very light body, so although it was pretty light, there was a bit of neck-dive.
  24. Thanks! It's a little thing, but I'm a sucker for rosewood.
