1. Yes somebody buy this amp. It used to be mine and I'd still have it if didn't have to haul it up 3 flights of stairs after every gig. Sounds fantastic and looks georgous (I always had guitarists asking for a go even though I insisted it was for bass only). It's not one of those anonymous black boxes most bass players have to put up with - it's got tweed covered character and is 350watts into 4 ohms so is not only georgeous to look at but it's pretty darn loud! Buy it pleeeeese.....................before I end up buying it back!
2. I think I want one! And they're pretty reasonable too http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~Hagstrom-HB-8,-Black-Gloss~ID~12312.asp
3. Never hear a 12 string before. I've heard John Paul Jones playing an 8 string and it had a very BIG sound not unlike this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpWNjFPDtRY&feature=related
4. A bass? (just a wild guess really).
5. Yes it's strange. My TC electronic is plenty loud enough through a 2x12 8 ohm cab with the gain just below peaking and the master at halfway. Through my 8 ohm Ashdown ABM 15 it sounds even louder. I hate to think what kind of volume I could achieve using them together giving a 4 ohm load (I've never had to try). But supposedly TC electronic exaggerate the actually wattage of their amps because people believe watts equal loudness.
6. Very nice. A jazz with a Musicman humbucker - the best of both worlds. Pretty too. I've just been checking these out on youtube.........what a sound! Very musicman with a hint of jazz. I want one! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOcHMTPsRE8&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWd7LqG5NxA But not today as I don't have bucks (wrong timing) good luck with the sale though.
7. Suggest, to the bands you play with, a cover you (at the level you are at now) can't actually play. Something that will really stretch and challenge you. It can be a popular song but with a really difficult bassline. Maybe something by Jamiroquai or Hit me with your Rhythm Stick by the Blockheads. The other players parts on these type of songs are pretty simple but the basslines can stretch even the best bass players. You'll never improve by playing Johnny Cash numbers all night (not that you do but you know what I mean).
8. Crikey! Somebody's been keeping that under the bed from the day they bought it. Very pretty.
9. I like Jazz necks too but my Precision's neck is very shallow which makes it very comfortable to play. It's a MIJ 57 re-issue. Do they have shallower necks than other Precisions? If you're looking for a Jazz neck for your P I also have a couple of Jazz necks for sale which are on their way to Ebay tomorrow http://basschat.co.uk/topic/157964-two-nice-jazz-bass-necks-for-sale/
10. Oh no! What have I started?
11. Some very good advice here from Carol Kaye. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9idtdWAAEA
12.
Just wondered what the width of the neck is at the nut on the squier. Also is the neck nice and straight.
PM replied and nut sizes updated on original post.
13. Both necks are maple with rosewood fretboards and will fit any normal Fender Jazz or Precision Bass. The first neck is from my old early nineties (93/94), Japanese, Silver Series, Squier Jazz Bass, which I bought a couple of years ago. It's a very nice neck with a satin finish. There's a bit of wear on the back of the neck from playing but other than that it's in a pretty good condition. The frets have plenty of life left in them too. It comes with the original machineheads ( the bushing on the G string machinehead is missing but It still works fine and they're easy to buy online if you want to fit one). Price £100 The other neck is an Allparts Jazz Bass Neck which I bought about a year ago off Ebay. The guy I bought it from had rolled the edges of the fret board and tinted it a warm golden colour. He'd also put a Fender decal on it which is quite authentic looking but could be removed with bit of light sanding. This one comes without the machineheads. Because a tint had been applied to the neck, the fretmarkers on the side of the neck were difficult to see, so I scraped them to enable the white paint underneath to show through. So be aware they now look a bit scruffier than they did before but at least you can see them on a dark stage. This neck is pretty newish so it has no fretwear on it at all. Price £100 The prices include P&P Edit : I always assumed The Squier neck had the usual Jazz nut width of 38mm but having just measured it, it's actually 40mm. Quite shallow though. The Allparts neck's nut width is the normal 38mm. Both necks are straight and true and up until recently have been attached to bodies and played regularly.
14. I sent a message to him and he says the parts are all factory fitted.
15. On the website the Babicz looks pretty chunky. I liked the badass I had on my old Jazz Bass as the baseplate was thin and enabled me to get a very low action but I never felt it made the bass sound any different to the bog standard Fender Bridge. On the other hand the Fender vintage bridge with spiral saddles I fitted did alter the sound of the jazz and I ended up with a much toppier sound (which I didn't like much and made me go straight back to the badass). You won't get much better soundwise than the badass you already have. Why do you want to change - are you after something that can adjust the string spacing on your bass or something? Or do you just like the look of the Babicz?
16. Has this bass been under somebody's bed for 30 years? My Squier is 10 years younger than this and looks 20 years older. It's either the best preserved JV Squier I've ever seen or somebody's gone out and replaced the bridge, pickups and machine heads? Either way he's optimistic if he thinks he's going to get a grand for it. 17.
nothing to do with me, but saw this and thought of this thread: http://www.ebay.co.u...=item20bd3779d7
Yes it was one of those. Passive with one pickup near the bridge. I'd buy this one if I could justify owning another bass. Edit - In fact I think the one above on Ebay and the one in this thread are one and the same http://basschat.co.u...ster-valuation/ Reading his latest thread about a noisey pickup I don't think I'll bother bidding on it after all.
18. Saw a guy playing an Ibanez Roadster from the 80's what a sound! Does anyone own one? Lucky you if you do! What a fantastic punchy bass. I wants one! Here's what they look like http://www.escapeact.com/richbass/
19. The Liverpool boy too lazy to take a picture, so he stole somebody else's? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Jazz-Bass-2000-Issue-/180729842998?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item2a14568d36 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Jazz-Bass-Mexican-/330617451694?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item4cfa55f4ae
20. I have heard tell of the Mythical Ken. I will give him a call. Thanks.
21. Last week, having never played double bass before, I took the plunge and bought myself a secondhand bass. It's a Gewa (a German make) and It plays really nicely and has a low action but above the D on the G string it buzzes like crazy. It obviously needs setting up by someone who knows what they're doing (i.e. not me) and I wondered if anyone knew of a decent luthier in Edinburgh who could do this for me?
