Flexibility is the key, so go for amp and cab. You can mix & match and aim for 2 cabs. I have a Trace Series 6 AH200 head, and 2 custom cabs, a 1x15 and a 1x12 which has a horn. All in all £400. The Trace head is always loud enough for anything, and there is still the PA. There is always some quality gear out there.

I was 14 and had been playing a few instruments for a while, but was seriously thinking of guitar. I saw a poster at school offering hire of a Bass. I had a lightbulb moment and knew that was for me. I brought it home that day and showed my family and anounced that I was going to play Bass. Took lessons and soon got my own. I've never looked back.

Hi & welcome You should get in a band and get out there gigging when you fell you are ready. Practising and learning are great, but with playing bass it's much more fulfilling IMO to be out playing live. Once you start there's no turning back. Whatever you do have fun. Enjoy the forum.

1. Broke an E string mid set once, luckily had an old 'spare' one which I quickly changed. 2. Broke a new G string just before a gig when I was replacing the set. Had to use my old one. 3. The first time my battery went it was mid set. Thew me for a moment, then quickly changed it. Just be prepared and carry all your crucial spares in your gig bag. The other band members can carry it for you if you need to be out of action for a short time. My favourite piece to play if I have to cover someone being out of action is the '[i][/i]Hamlet Cigar'[i][/i] bass line, or Air on a G string. The effect is mildly amusing.

Talking of being featured in a bass magazine, it has not fared so well for the son of some friends of ours. He was supposed to be featured in the Bassically Speaking feature in BGM. I keep heairng he's in this months and he's not!

In our band the guitarist will not entertain another guitarist. There is not enough room in the sonic landscape for a 2nd guitar.

We are all dying to know what you are GASing for? I just got bored and checked out other acronyms for GAS and for Gear Acquisition Syndrome it has after in brackets (mainly bass guitarists). Well, I missed Michael Manring as he was on at 11.40am not 3.00pm. Caught Jan Akkerman of Focus doing some good acoustic solo stuff, and the Chris George Band who are the Marshall in house trio who did a rocking medley, and incorporated the most interesting drum solo I have seen to date! Bought a 20' lead for 5£ and t-shirt from the Mansons stand. My son got a Marshall phone sock, a t-shirt and some stickers. We both checked out some great kit, with him getting his hands on the Mansons Matt Bellamy MB-1 guitar, whilst I tried out the Mansons JPJ signature bass which was fantastic. There were some bargains if you wanted with great discounts on many basses for just the day, including a MM Stingray 2eq in black with a maple neck for £999 new! I was impressed with the TC Electronics amps and speakers and could easily see myself with the head at least, especially the one signed by JPJ who used it on saturday for his performance (no wonder I sounded so good!). The Warwick I used was suprisingly good. The Flea bass felt great (yours for £299 that day only) but was let down by the Hughes & Ketner amp after giving the TC stuff a good go. More great amps at the Orange, Mark Bass & Trace Elliot stands, and plenty of gorgeous basses about. £10 is ok considering what is on offer and the amount of performances lined up. Worth at least half of anyones day. You get to see more than you would in any one shop, although the hall isn't the best place to try the kit out. Same time same place next year.

Sounds great. I'm there on Sunday and looking forward to seeing MM.
